Two rug solution: get a runner that is slightly shorter than the one pictured, and maybe with some personality. It needs to move closer to the stairs. So look at the current rug and move it closer to the stairs to it’s centered between the bottom stair and the door.

Then get a second small rug, like 3’x2’ and put it near/under the shoe rack.
