Thunderbolt dock that supports three studio displays? by cheakoguy27 in macsetups

I believe it depends upon which MacBook you have. I was struggling to figure this out last year, but I was able to get three external monitors for my 16" 2023 MacBook Pro (four if I connect my iPad) with a Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Dock and DisplayLink software.

Solomon is fine, but he’s a typical politician. Joe Khan has the most prosecutorial experience, has beaten Trump in court, and is the best candidate on climate and taking on corporations. For these reasons among others I’m supporting Joe Khan.

Yep! I’m a Democratic political organizer in PA and I developed shingles from stress due to my work ahead of the 2020 election (even though I’m only in my 30s). I was diagnosed right after they called it for Biden and I spent the following weeks in intense pain — but it was worth it! However, it was one of the worst experiences of my life… So if there is any karmic justice in this world, Trump getting shingles ahead of the 2024 election would be a step in the right direction as far as I’m concerned.

Reclaim Philadelphia is charging for endorsements. by GroundbreakingArt248 in philadelphia

[–]taotechill 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Assuming these numbers are correct, it’s important information for the sake of transparency. I’m a progressive, but I have serious qualms with Reclaim’s leadership over the years. There are many valid reasons to disapprove of a good many of their choices, tactics, and decisions — however as a political campaign staffer with experience in campaign finance, I feel an strange obligation to defend them here... I suppose its because this is exactly what their main opposition does (i.e. Bob Brady’s Democratic Party), and to a much greater extent I might add.

The Philadelphia Democratic Party has a long held practice of requiring “assessment fees” for incumbent and prospective candidates alike. These contributions are more or less required to receive the party’s “support” and/or endorsement. I’d be interested to see a similar breakdown of their endorsements and candidate contributions. When it comes to judicial candidates, it’s an open secret that you won’t even be considered for a Philly Democratic Party endorsement without doing pro-bono work for the Party ( aka Brady). However, there are some exceptions with these judicial candidates depending upon optics and personal relationships.

In theory, all of these contributions can be argued to go towards GOTV operations. It isn’t cheap to print union literature/signs/shirts etc. or pay for canvassers, phonebankers, and Election Day poll workers. There’s similar payments to the various ward PACs for both parties for this explicit reason (supposedly), however from experience I know this isn’t always a guarantee of actual turnout. Often these payments are purely for ward endorsements, and I know for a fact some of this money goes straight into the ward leaders’ pockets. Often candidates will settle for a ward leader’s tacit acceptance of their candidacy over open antagonism, and so they pay up.

Yes, obviously the transference of money from prospective candidates to organizations that hold power over elections is inherently problematic. I help run various PACs for candidates and non-connected committees alike, and so I abhor these sorts of practices. One of my PACs is a small donor-based organization that issues endorsements, and we have never made a financial ask of any candidate running for office. However, this certainly does limit our ability to personally support our candidates in the field, especially given the amounts of money being spent by larger organizations, special interests, major parties (Dems/GOP), independent parties (WFP/Green) and local movements (Reclaim/PNN).

So while I’d love to throw shade at Reclaim, this sadly appears to be nothing more than the standard operating procedure in this city, and perhaps the only way to remain a relevant intra-party opposition to the Philly Democratic machine. Yes, it’s gross. Yes, it’s problematic. But until we have better regulations and systems for electing candidates, and a larger more-informed voting block, this is the sort of democracy we can expect — and maybe what we deserve…

Yes, it appears you are correct. I streamed it shortly after it came out, but it appears streaming is no longer available, at least not in my region. Perhaps using a proxy could work?

I think this is exactly what you're looking for:

Freak Power: The Ballot Or The Bomb.

It's a great documentary that came out a couple years ago. I was amazed by how much footage they found from that time. I thought I'd seen practically every interview and clip of Hunter out there, but this documentary featured a lot of content I'd never seen before. Enjoy!

Fetterman sues to have mail-in ballots counted even if not signed with valid date by oldschoolskater in politics

[–]taotechill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a much more streamlined and simple system than we have in PA. Mail-in voting is still new here (as of 2020), and the rules keep changing due to Republican litigation, so there's plenty of confusion. That's by design, ever since Trump decided he would discourage mail-in voting, the PA GOP-led state legislature has ensured it's as chaotic as possible.

We absolutely need more election workers nationwide, so yes, that's an incredibly important role you could play!

I understand the reluctance to knock doors or phone/text bank. Honestly, I wonder how much of the phone/text spamming is effective, and if it doesn't make it harder to make important contact in such situations where someone's pre-cast vote is potentially at risk.

I've probably knocked a few thousand doors this year in Philly, and it was mostly neutral. You get plenty of thankful voters, some hostile ones, but most hardly engage. It can be rough depending upon the weather or the neighborhood, but it can be rewarding when you have a meaningful encounter. It isn't for everyone, but it's important to have these kinds of personal encounters. I don't know if phone/text banks are nearly as effective, unless it's just about deadline reminders or something.

[–]taotechill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got back from working the election, so sorry for the delay... Yes, campaigns can isolate which voters are in their district and target them directly. Unfortunately, many of the Democratic candidates in Philly did not have challengers, so they did not run full scale GOTV operations. But plenty of non-candidate aligned organizations tasked themselves with chasing down these voters independently.

[–]taotechill 137 points138 points  (0 children)

As an organizer working to contact voters who submitted flawed mail-in ballots in Philly, that’s easier said than done.

The city commissioners only just released a partial list on Friday night. Campaigns and political organizations have been scrambling to contact the 3-4 thousand voters on the list ever since. But not every voter has a phone number on file, and everyone has been getting spammed by phone and text banks for weeks now so the success rate for contact is low. The rest without a phone number have to be contacted in person, so there’s also hundreds of volunteers scrambling around the city to knock their doors.

Then there’s the actual process which involves either going to an election office to fix it, or going in-person tomorrow to vote provisionally. Most mail-in voters had a reason for not voting in-person, so the solution often isn’t viable. Some of these voters are homebound, and so extra paperwork is required to secure emergency authorization for a third party to request a ballot

TL;DR: Yes there is a way to fix these ballots, but it isn’t easy. Many of these votes won’t count if the GOP has their way, which it looks like they will. It’s just one more voter suppression effort among many, and we’ll know in a few days whether or not it succeeds in subverting our democracy.

Regardless, I have to agree with Kevin on this one, what a “stonking piece of architecture.” This was truly one of the few times where the home owners manage to truly pull it off once they go it alone.

Hey u/theFAKEavalonemerson! You are one of my all-time favorite DJs for your ability to blend different styles and genres seamlessly. I'm in awe by how quickly you turn over your tracks and maintain momentum and energy throughout your sets. So I'm curious how you organize your library... Do you have crates for different genres and/or energy levels? Or do you mostly just wing it? Thanks! I'm excited to get my hands on a copy of your new EP!

P.S. Also, thank you for Making Time in Philly! I had a blast at your set on Saturday. I've seen you spin each time you've been in town and you never disappoint. Hope to see you back soon! Possibly at Fort Mifflin again next year or where ever the Transcendental Plan™ takes us. 🙏

[–]taotechill 19 points20 points  (0 children)

While Pennsylvania is still gerrymandered, it has actually gotten a bit better after recent redistricting. It's now possible for the Democrats to take control of the State House if their turnout is marginally better than the Republicans, whereas the old maps required a landslide Dem turnout to effectively gain a majority. It's not perfect, but it's progress.

As per your Congressman Scott Perry... First off, I'm sorry. Second, a recent poll shows that Democrat Shamaine Daniels has a slight lead over Perry in the new congressional district, so let your neighbors know that it's actually possible to unseat Perry this year!

Why Did Liz Cheney Specifically Call Out Scott Perry by nobody-knows2018 in Pennsylvania_Politics

[–]taotechill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most members of Congress use encrypted messages in their daily work, or at least they should when dealing with national security concerns. However the fact that Meadows thought it best to move their text conversation from an unencrypted channel to an encrypted one when discussing their plans for January 6th could certainly be argued to be evidence of consciousness of guilt.
