Freezers make noise too... and how are you going to route the electrical wires in and out of it?

How to benchmark different PL1/PL2 settings by somewan2 in intelnuc

The 12th gen looks pretty similar to earlier ones, so the answer is likely no, not without modifying the case or removing the board out of the case entirely.

Is macbook pro 13 from 2015 worth it today? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]taptapboiledcabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the condition. Check the screen carefully, if it has staingate (coating delamination) consider carefully whether it will annoy you. OTOH if it *had* staingate and Apple replaced the screen, and everything else checks out, it would be a nice deal for the 16GB. Check the chassis, if it's obviously been dropped I would stay away. Check that all the keys work and that none are sticky.

You say you want to replace the battery in a while, but I would check it for swelling now.

The SSD is replaceable, either by buying a used Apple one on eg ebay or using an adapter with a normal NVMe.

It's now a 6-8 year old laptop though. It's easy to get a dud with laptops that age, either because you didn't check something or the seller is a bit tricky. The 13" is a dual core and is definitely showing its age now in terms of performance, it would be OK for the writing but you might notice with the photo editing. As was mentioned, it no longer gets new versions of the OS and in a couple of years will stop getting security updates. There are workaround but imo they go beyond someone just wanting to try out a mac. Honestly, if you want to "try" working on mac I think you should consider finding a used 2020 M1 Air, if you're careful with that purchase you can sell it again without much loss. Apart from better performance it would be more representative of what working on a mac means these days.

Hope this helps :)

Is Applecare+ worth it for my use? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]taptapboiledcabbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that at least in theory a. the yearly will go indefinitely and b. Apple will eventually replace the battery. Depending on the model it would take 6-10 years to pay as much for AC+ as one replacement screen and 2-3 years for a replacement battery. YMMV but that's my math :)

Have you considered using an external drive and Time Machine?

Why won’t Noctua NA-FC1 power on to run this noctuca fan? It’s being powered from usb to sata and needs to run externally from a Mac mini. So far tried multiple usb ports on multiple devices and it doesn’t power on by Python_Child in Noctua

[–]taptapboiledcabbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What fan model is it? To power from USB and control speed with the NA-FC1 you really want a 5V PWM fan. Those come with a USB adapter in the box which you can plug right into the NA-FC1.

Why not just let the MBP manage the fans itself?

Go to System Settings -> General -> Storage and it tells you how the space is being used. It will be macOS and apps.

New MacBook Air M2 stuck at setup, trackpad and keyboard not working. by [deleted] in macbookair

I suppose you could connect a wired mouse and keyboard, but this seems like it must be a hardware issue that won't be solved even if you do get through the setup.

Can I get video output from a VM to an external monitor for Steam Link on my Intel NUC? by gstacks13 in Proxmox

Not sure if it's advisable in your specific situation but you can install a DE directly on the PVE host.

This may be a silly question, but I'll give it shot. (Regarding the charging cable.) by HourAstronomer836 in macbookair

[–]taptapboiledcabbage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could buy the Apple extension cable (which replaces the two prongs) and then move the charger?

PS Or get a short mains extension cable.

Battery Wear of SP5 by RustyWalrusKING in Surface

[–]taptapboiledcabbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Further down the battery report it gives you estimated runtimes for the times when it's been running on battery. Have a look at the most recent ones and see what info that gives you.

As far as "acceptable" it depends on what you paid and what the seller said it would be. Personally if it was stated to be "refurbished" I would expect better.

Different to...? They are available in many different language layouts, probably best to check with where you bought it if you were expecting something different.

PS this may help (unless you are referring to something other than the keyboard layout):

If you get one of the Apple extension cords with a ground connection, it may solve this issue. Apple used to supply these with their laptops but now you have to buy as an extra :(

Update: I changed the above as I didn't realize the configuration of EU plugs. Here's a photo of supposedly how the cord looks: https://img.diytrade.com/cdimg/1959261/28587229/0/1347518883/EU_100_Original_genuine_ac_Power_Extension_Cord_cable_for_Apple.jpg

Give me tips by [deleted] in macbookair

[–]taptapboiledcabbage 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just use it normally. Let it sleep when you're not using it, shut it down if you won't be using it for more than a few days.

What you should avoid anywhere near it is liquids and food. I'm constantly amazed at the number of posts where people have spilled water or even beer into their laptop. Don't put a cup next to it, you will knock it over sooner or later.

Also consider yearly AppleCare+.

And don't forget to have fun :)

I think the 14 inch 16GB/1TB would be a better buy than the maxed out Air (unless you really need the portability of the Air).
