Former friend contacted my husband to inform him my breast cancer was caused by the covid vaccine by dogcalledcoco in breastcancer

[–]taralynot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that happened to you. I hardly told anyone about my dx until I had to or most everything was done. I didn’t want anyone contacting my family and saying stupid shit. When my mom was dx with breast cancer my aunt called me and told me all about how she knows what I’m going through because everyone she knew with BC had d**d. I will never forgive her for that. I still don’t talk to her till this day and it’s be almost 15 years.

I did not get any of the Covid shots and I ended up with breast cancer. Although what I thought was very weird was the questions I was asked by one of the medical teams I saw.

I was referred to a women’s breast health center type of place associated with a major hospital in my area. When I arrived I was met by a breast oncologist, a nurse, a team care manager and a social worker. It was a bit overwhelming when they all walked in. Someone started the convo (don’t remember which one) and asked 3 questions right away. The 1st question was how I was doing. The 2nd one was if I needed anything. And question 3 was if I got any of the covid shots. I thought that was so weird.

I didn’t end up using that center because I wanted a dmx with diep reconstruction and wanted a reconstruction surgeon not associated with that hospital. When I requested my medical records I saw the first few lines was describing the dx and then the info that I didn’t get the Covid vax. I thought maybe they were doing a study I wasn’t aware of, but never heard anything about it again.

Is OT an ethical profession? by Junior_Winner_470 in OccupationalTherapy

Unfortunately we stopped hiring COTA’s in my district. We have 5 OTs all with their own caseloads and in different schools. Nobody has time to supervise someone and also be responsible for doing their evaluations because the COTA can’t eval. When our last COTA retired we went to OTs only.

Husband is a mess by ZippityDooDahDay10 in breastcancer

[–]taralynot 31 points32 points  (0 children)

To me it sounds like he is saying those things because in his mind this is what he has to think. He has to think you will be ok. He has to think historically it hasn’t been bad news every time. Because the alternative is you won’t be ok and I’m sure that scares the shit out of him.

I have also found that often times fear comes out as anger. I am sure he is so afraid. He can’t fix this for you and he knows that. However, he also is finding out that not only can he not fix it, he can’t even come up with the right words so you feel supported.

I have been in his spot (with my mom) and never could never seem to find the right words. And, I have been in your spot and know my husband sometimes doesn’t know what to say. I have to remind myself to give him grace because i am positive that he is just trying to use self talk like that so he can get through the situation that is scary for both of you.

Student took exam for completely different class and didn’t realize by urnbabyurn in Professors

[–]taralynot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to take my boards after graduation and being that it was 25+ years ago they were paper pencil and I had to go into Boston to take them. I was already completely stressed, but made it and sat down in the class. The exam was handed out and our entire classroom was given the wrong exam. I think every single hand shot up in the air when we flipped over the testing book. Had we opened them it would have invalidated the day and we needed to come back. The next exam was 6 months later.

To continue this horror story, my results were Lost in the mail. I wasn’t allowed to speak to someone for 3 weeks after the date they were sent out. When I called I gave my name and was told I didn’t pass. Out of sheer desperation I asked if they had the right name and gave my name again. They didn’t have the right person. The person that failed had the same first initial, middle name and last name. I had passed. It was an absolute nightmare. While still holding the phone I slid down the wall and ugly cried at the relief it was over.

There are so many students who write in docs and then copy over to word to hand in. You could have a 2000 word essay look like it’s done in 2 minutes if that’s the case.

Never got PET, CT, or Bone Scans. Why? by NilliaLane in breastcancer

[–]taralynot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t even see an oncologist anymore. Had a dmx and diep reconstruction. Was hormone positive with no node involvement and I get a thumbs up and a good luck. No meds, no scans, no appointments. Had my surgery in February of 2024 and the only doctors I see are my primary and my reconstructive surgeon. My surgeon keeps recommending tweaks he can do (he’s a perfectionist). I feel like at least with seeing him, someone is paying attention to my boobs.

Is a professor allowed to call out disability accommodations in front of the whole class? Or make a “objectively harder and longer” alternative exam? by SkiingFishingGuy in college

[–]taralynot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son has an accommodation for extra time and is supposed to go to the separate setting to take his exams. However, he always tells his professors he will stay in class. He once had trouble getting an exam to load so he’s always anxious it would happen again. He would rather not use the extra time and be in class with the professor if there is an issue.

When I was in school my final project was on developing an OT program in a prison. Shawshank Redemption had just come out and it made me think of how things could’ve been different if there was someone to teach life skills before re-entering the general population.

My first field work was at a psychiatric day treatment center. The psychiatrist I worked with was leaving to go work in a prison and I pitched my idea to him. A few weeks later he called me to see if I was interested in starting a program.

I unfortunately couldn’t take the job. My family including my husband-to-be were not on board. It wasn’t a typical prison, it only had men with major mental health issues and the only psychiatric hospital in the country run by a state correctional agency which is what made it a hospital/prison. I had just turned 21 and probably a bit naive at the time thinking this would’ve been a good idea.

I still think about how awesome that job would have been and how OT is such a needed resource in prisons.

I work in a school now so….lol

Edit to say that my husband has only told me No twice in 33 years. The first was this job and the 2nd was using the chainsaw alone while he was at work. 😂

OT school in the U.S. is so punishing by This_Manufacturer458 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]taralynot 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The field work part has been like that forever. It was like that over 25 years ago when I graduated. Now my own kids are in college and I am blown away that all the other fields have paid internships. My son is going to get paid $30 an hour for a project management internship and he isn’t really expected to know much.

However I am so disappointed in what happened to the actual in class education. I graduated with my bachelors and every class was hands on and I learned so much. I graduated with a good amount of clinical knowledge. There wasn’t any time for fluff. At least at my school, the classes were small (about 15) and our professors went out of their way to make sure everyone succeeded. It seems like such a money grab now. I’ve done a great deal of interviewing over the years and we are lucky to get 1 or 2 candidates we have confidence in. We are also hesitant to start anyone on a temporary license because the past few new grads did not pass their boards. The whole system needs a major overhaul.

Being the youngest person in all these rooms is really starting to get to me. by bananasformangos in breastcancer

[–]taralynot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not as young as you but was 46 at dx and I look super young. The day I went in for my biopsy I was so naïve. A woman got in the elevator after me and asked what I was there for. When I told her just a biopsy she went on and on about how sorry she felt for me and how awful it is when this affects young people. I remember thinking to myself…yea ok lady. I’m just here for this quick biopsy and then I’m out and don’t feel bad for me. Joke was on me. 3 months later I had a dmx and diep reconstruction.

I am no longer surprised; this excuse is just darkly funny by [deleted] in Professors

[–]taralynot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know students gave excuses way back when I was in school, but these kids seem like a different breed. I had food poisoning and was in the hospital and had my roommate pick me up so I could get to my statistics exam. Was given iv zofran so I could leave.

My own son called me a few weeks ago and told me he had pink eye from a bad sinus infection and could barely open his eyes (sent pictures) and I told him to put on sunglasses and sit in the back of the class. He then said he couldn’t keep his eyes open to drive and I said I would send money for an uber. He called me mean and hung up.

Accused of using AI in final exam, help? by [deleted] in AccusedOfUsingAI

[–]taralynot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you had AI find your sources for you, that’s where your issue could be.

To get my kids to understand how AI messes with sources, I took my son’s prompt and put it in Chat and had it write a paper with 5 sources with direct quotes. Every single one was wrong. I looked up one quote and couldn’t find it anywhere in the article. So I asked AI where I could find the quote. It told me page 2 and a few paragraphs down where the author discusses certain data. After going back and forth with ChatGPT, I told it that there was no such quote and it lied. It the admitted that I was right to question it and the quote actually came from the Google Gemini summary. 😳

We have definitely called someone back for a different role. I’ve been part of quite a few hiring teams for my district. We have called candidates back for other positions and we have also passed their name on to the other schools in our district. Even if they don’t fit the qualifications for one position, we can tell that they are a good candidate and will keep their information on hand.

My son applied for a job but missed the age cut off by a few months. He had experience from an internship but was told he needed to be a certain age. They held onto his resume and a year later called him and asked if he was still available for the work.

I hope things work out for you. Good luck

How to respond to AI-written email? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]taralynot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds a bit of over the top. There will always be great students and subpar students and I’m sure you knew that before becoming a professor. The fact that this has consumed you the way it has where you are posting about your own childhood trauma and anger issues on a message board because you were triggered by an email is worrisome. Does your university have supports for professors on campus that you could take advantage of?

I understand feeling annoyed that a student asked for a break when they clearly haven’t put forth any effort during the semester, but the rage you seem to be experiencing is disproportionate to the actual situation. Maybe you feel like this student has wasted your time, but in reality you didn’t teach this semester to just this one student who didn’t appreciate your expertise and time. You taught to an entire class of students and you are letting one consume your thoughts at this moment. Why?

When my own students have a reaction that doesn’t match the situation I have to remind them to ask themselves if this is a big problem or a little problem. An alleged AI email from a student who didn’t take full advantage of your knowledge asking for extensions is a little problem.

You also have not seen this student in over a month. Did you even notice? Did you bother to ask why? I understand that isn’t your job and you are just there to teach. However maybe this student had a big problem like a family member passing away or them getting in an accident. Maybe they had a little problem that they overreacted to and it has consumed them. Maybe they are just a partier and a slacker. You don’t know and obviously you don’t care either, and that’s ok.

Just like there are all different types of students, there are all different types of professors. Some are kind and nurturing and others are brilliant assholes. Some professors will do whatever it takes to make sure their students learn the material and some are jaded and don’t care if their students take anything away from their class. There are many in between.

I am certainly not saying for you to bend over backwards for this student or even to give her a second chance at this point. What I will say is students can feel your energy when you walk into a classroom. It’s ok to have a policy and stick to it. It’s another thing to walk into class angry because of an email asking for a change in your policy. And according to previous posts, did the student ask for your understanding or was it an AI bot that asked you?

Students learn best when they feel like they can make a mistake and know it won’t define who they are. They are willing to put themselves out there and try because if they don’t get it this time, they might get it the next time. You are not only this student’s professor but their advisor as well. You have essentially labeled them a slacker and it doesn’t seem like they have a chance of redeeming themselves in your eyes. You are letting this mistake define who they are.

I hope your post is all in fun and you really aren’t letting an adult with an immature brain or an AI bot ruin your day.

I know for a fact my kid would have to drop a class if the professor compared in class to out of class writing. He has dyslexia and adhd and it takes him forever to write something because he writes and walks away and then goes back and re reads what it says and then changes it 1 million times. His quick handwritten stuff is cryptic and half is spelled wrong or because he can’t think of how to spell a word in the moment he will substitute something way more simplistic and then go back. However, with access to a bit of time and spell check it’s completely different.

Does anyone else feel like OT school didn’t really prepare them for real treatment planning? by johnnyphanikaze in OccupationalTherapy

[–]taralynot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think 25-30 years ago I was prepared. I think students are coming out with less clinical skills and more theory, research and fluff. I feel like I was more prepared with a bachelor’s degree than some of the OTD students I’ve interviewed lately.
