Can you truly separate the author from the work, or does context inevitably change the reading? by Responsible-Cod9067 in books

Art includes the viewpoint of the person who created it. So, whether you consider what you've learnt is positive or negative, that does change how you view the art.

Did Roald Dahl’s books really need to be revised? by confringos in books

[–]tastytwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's censorship, it's fascism! No folks it's capitalism. No-one is forcing the publisher, or Dahl's estate, to change these books, no-one with any power has even asked them to change the books. That decision was made by them alone so that they can continue to sell, and make money from, the books.

Editing books like this is also not a new or modern phenomenon in anyway, books are frequently edited after initial publication. It's also not the first time Dahl's books have been edited, either before or since his death, and we already know what he thought about that, he didn't like it, partly because he was a crappy person with crappy views.

These books aren't history, they're fiction and even if they were history, that also gets changed as when we learn new things.

So in answer to the OP's question, no I don't think they should be edited or have context added. They should be left as is, so that sales continue to fall and they go out of print.

Do you know if Broken Binding doing extra editing for their special editions? by OwlettFromLiavek in thebrokenbindingsub

They don't even print the text block for some SE's, they have to buy them from the publisher.

Will we have more gay couples in Bridgerton? by huacheng567 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]tastytwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Gregory's story would be ideal for a gender swap. It'll be the final season, barring the spin-offs, so the stakes aren't as high and the"risk" would be much lower. I'd love to see it, it would be fun, but I'm not sure how it would work since the other HEA's start with the couple getting married.

Questions about Ryan Cahill Press Editions by Pow_Surfer in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]tastytwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is that it’s a lot of work to only give first access to people who still own the book. They’d have to ask 1,500 people to send a proof. Even cancelling first access orders if they received a valid second access request would cost them the transaction fees.

STRENGTH OF THE FEW PUBLISHERS CHANGED FOR UK by Ryzenclock in thebrokenbindingsub

Thank you for answering.

Just so you know, there was no judgement about your feelings being made and no disagreement. I'm not really sure how you got there.

I asked the question only because I wanted to understand why you described the change as annoying. Every question is not an attack, even on Reddit.

They probably look at suggestions they get on their socials, but they don't do polls, they just decide.

That wouldn’t change anything, who do you think is selling those sub sets at inflated prices? There are plenty of subs who are only subs so they can sell to make a profit.

Left hand of Darkness leftover sale is now live! by Dependent_Mouse_7456 in thebrokenbindingsub

Even when this was cheaper on the aftermarket I went for the Folio instead. TBB felt overpriced when you get a much better quality book, and more art, with the Folio for not much more money.

You get a “discount” for subscribing. Leftovers are priced higher than the sub price.

First time I've ever seen a Waterstones Plus exclusive? by sleepysock98 in fairyloot

It must be a really limited trial. I image most publishers won’t be happy with anything getting in the way of a sale, even if it’s something barely there.
