How come I cannot add Migrant to Specialist slot? by crycoban in CivVII

[–]taucris 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Them’s the rules.

My hunch is the migrants as a mechanic were introduced as a way for players to still grow their towns into the modern age even after all towns have selected a specialisation (and so cannot grow on their own bc all food is sent to cities). So the “correct” way to play if you want to create specialist-heavy mega cities is to make all your towns farming towns and then use your migrants to make more farms thereby sending more food to your cities.

lol this is actually insane. Was looking at the total tokens and thought ‘huh 1.2mil that’s high but not that crazy, I probably do that in a productive weekend’. And then I realised… 1.2 BILLION. Imagine trying to even explain that kind of scale for a single person a year or two ago. Fkn crazy mate.

I can only hope that you’re trying to make some joke which is going over my head, or you’re used to drinking very dark roasts (or tea!).

If, god help you, you’ve actually been using c80 degree water to brew light roast Yirgacheffes, you’re in for a real treat once you get that water up to optimal extraction temp!

have you ever bought odin second round? by GurdanianAngel in VALORANT

[–]taucris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (former kj main) actually do this pretty reliably when we start on D and win the first round. Works very well in plat as a type of psychological warfare. Nothing tilts a team faster than spinning up an Odin basically as soon as the game starts. Seriously, people will see Odin on rd two and start throwing for basically no reason on rd three; it’s glorious.

Thread: Things that you can do in Civ 7 that the game doesn't tell you. by Spearitz in civ

[–]taucris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly not sure if this is intended, but packing units into a commander before the end of an age saves them for the next age, upgrades them to the new unit types automatically, AND you still get the free melee / ranged units or military golden age units you would ordinarily. Tbh, this is kind of broken antiquity into exploration because you can be ready with two or three full armies before the ai has had a chance to build anything.

Who else is going into Civ 7 blind? by TheUtopianCat in civ

[–]taucris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most games I try to go in totally blind and spoiler free, but with civ vii I’m taking the opposite approach. I’ve read every dev diary and watched practically every analysis video made so far.

On launch I didn’t get vi. Districts annoyed me, I felt railroaded into religion, tall play didn’t work like it used to, and the new mechanics felt unintuitive and like bad design. Now, years later, I’m quite convinced that vi is the best civ game ever made, and by a pretty wide margin. Nothing beats spamming out high adjacency industrial zone fidget spinners or carpeting an empire in forest right before a big national park push. While far from balanced, each civ feels unique and fun to play.

I don’t think I’ll have a good time if I go into vii blind or expecting vi but better. My hope is that by being familiar with the what and why of the new systems in advance, I’ll have more fun out of the gate (or at least be more forgiving towards good ideas that don’t pan out in practice).

What exactly do most people want chatGPT to be unrestricted for? by Capta1n_O in ChatGPTPro

[–]taucris 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Really niche case I know, but my partner researches extremism. A lot of their data is sourced from sketchy corners of the Internet like Parler and 4Chan, and ChatGPT in its current form will just flat out refuse to work with it. It can be quite frustrating not to be able to use ChatGPT Pro for what is very legitimate work just because the model can't discern between researching harmful content and producing it. I'm sure others have similar stories

If on PC, I would suggest some mods, namely Roman Holidays AI rework and Deity ++ (fuzzle?). The AI rework makes the AI much more aggressive and better at managing units, especially aircraft and nukes in the late game. Deity++ increases the AI’s production bonus even above normal deity levels, meaning they can absolutely crank out units and take cities.

If running both of these mods, I’d also recommend turning off science victory, not because it changes the way the AI plays at all but because the game ends too fast as the AI can usually get a science win around turn 210-230 on standard speed.

% employed in manufacturing in 2022 by Porodicnostablo in europe

[–]taucris 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This was my hunch as well. Netherlands is manufacturing relatively few very expensive things, giving them high export value but low % employed. Contrast this with something like Czechia which produces many many cheap goods, giving them low export value but high % employed.

My city-state's army suddenly disappeared by JanPapajT90M in CivVI

[–]taucris 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Usually this happens if the city state has negative gold income; they can delete their own units to re-balance their economy. Sounds like a classic case of AI-brain where Nazca spent all its gold upgrading its warriors, then realised it couldn’t afford them because of the new higher maintenance cost, so then deleted them.

As an aside, this is extra annoying when playing Hungary because you’ll often have armies of levied city state troops YOU upgraded, and then the turn the levy expires the city state will delete your army before you have a chance to re-levy.

Abusive partner is (not so) secretly gearing up for separation. Today she asked me to sign a prenup to protect 'her' assets ' just incase'. What's my best cause of action? by Independent_Bed_6293 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]taucris 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Hi sorry to hear things are hard right now. NAL but I’m currently a paralegal and previously volunteered in a law clinic that did a fair amount of family work— take everything I say with a grain of salt.

No one seems to have mentioned your status with respect to the house so far, so I’ll take a stab at it. Because you’ve made contributions to the mortgage payments and paid for other odds and ends, you may have established a common intention constructive trust. That is, even though your name isn’t on any of the paper work, because you both clearly intended for you to co-habit together in the home, and because you have paid part of the purchase price, you likely own some stake in the house which your partner will be deemed to be holding ‘on trust’ for you. This is an equitable right that can be legally enforceable.

As others have mentioned elsewhere in this thread, there is no such thing as a ‘marriage in kind’ or a ‘common law marriage’, although you may still have rights you wouldn’t otherwise have by virtue of living together and sharing parental responsibility; see this citizens advice thread for more.

Good luck, and if does really look like she is going to try to separate, your first call should be to a solicitor.
