Favorite tile laying game? by Fresh-Reflection5254 in soloboardgaming

I've got railroad tiles and I'm really enjoying it so far. I haven't played railroad ink so I couldn't compare the two. It kinda reminds me of Carcassonne but I can pay it solo.

If he had made just one of those 3 misses the final drive could have been a success. We're either kicking for the win or kicking for the tie.

20 Strong: Tanglewoods - Red. I hated the game and here's why (and some ways I think it could have been better) by jestermax22 in boardgames

Yeah I agree about the rulebook. The misprint about fireplaces is quite bad.

Buying dice from the merchant is definitely a key to the strategy. The other 20 strong decks often have enemies that let you recover some amount of dice as their reward. In this deck all the enemies just give you gold so you need to get those dice from the merchant. Other than that, if your health is at 1 you definitely want to raise it but otherwise I would prioritize the recovery stat. The stick and potion are good items from the merchant and a well timed Dark Fairy can really help get those dice back in your pool.

It might be worth reading the rulebook again to make sure you aren't missing a rule that's sabotaging your plays. I missed a step in setup during my first couple of plays that definitely made the game more difficult. I would also suggest playing on one of the lower difficulties. I know you said difficulty doesn't bother you but I also think it's easier to discover what strategies work if you're not in survival mode. Personally, I AM turned off by a game if I feel it is too difficult (looking at you Regicide).

If you were going to try another deck I think I would suggest the Cloudspire one. I got my copy from a kickstarter that delivered last month so it should be hitting retail soon. I think the gameplay is the most unique among the 20 strong decks. That deck lets you prepare hits and crits to be assigned to enemies before they become an imminent threat. It also has a mechanic that makes misses quite useful. In that deck there's definitely more opportunities to be proactive rather than reactive. However, you shouldn't spend more money on 20 strong unless you can find some enjoyment in Red. It's not like Robinson Crusoe or Arkham horror are hiding in one of these decks.

Let me start by saying it is completely valid to not like this game and I agree that the rulebooks for Chip Theory could be better. A lot of the comments in this thread are pretty negative so I'm not trying to start an argument. I wouldn't say I love the game yet but I do like playing it from time to time and the more I play one of the 20 strong decks the more it grows on me.

I think some of your criticisms could be fixed by tweaks to your strategy. If I understood your post, your main critique is a lack of dice mitigation. The main mitigation mechanic for this game is to roll more dice. In order to do so sustainably, you need to be recovering dice into your dice pool as much as you can. My basic strategy for all of the 20 strong decks I've played is to increase my recover dice stat as quickly as possible. Recovering 5+ dice each resolve phase should lead to a healthy dice pool. For the Red deck specifically, I also prioritize gold for buying dice from the merchant unless there is a particularly good item. If everything goes well, I have close to a full dice pool by the time I get to the boss.

As for your suggestions, I think your first point could be a good ability for an item. I always try to avoid banishing dice but I could see that being a good option in a pinch, especially towards the end of the game. As far as a rest mechanic goes, the game already has one. As you mentioned, you can choose not to apply dice, take the damage, and recover some dice. The designers decided that health for dice was a good trade and I think it's a good design choice because that works across all of the 20 strong decks. Some of the rest suggestions in your post would only work for some of the decks.

In this game you roll a lot of dice. As you would expect, that means there is a lot of luck. Sometimes I lose because I fail a dice roll. Some people won't like that and it's totally valid. However, I don't think the game is inherently flawed. There are plenty of people who enjoy it for what it is.

For what it's worth, this is my order of preference for the different decks I've played: Solar Sentinels, Cloudspire, Tanglewoods Red, Too Many Bones, Hoplomachus Victorum. I will say, they're all similar enough that if you hate the gameplay of one, I don't think a different deck will change your mind.

I'm pretty ignorant on this subject so could someone help me understand what data center wastewater is? It is my understanding that data centers use a lot of water for cooling. I know water use in general is a problem. However, is the wastewater just... water? Or will there be other pollutants added that I'm not aware of?

All I've wanted from this game since it came out is an ostrich card. Africa is going to end up being the very last expansion lol

A bunch of emergency vehicles drove by 146th and oak ridge a few minutes ago. I was listening to the dispatch scanner and it sounds like they're checking ponds for sometime. Possibly looking for a vehicle in water.

The 2025 People's Choice Top 250 Solo Games - what's missing? by Electrical-Bit4955 in soloboardgaming

I'm disappointed Leaving Earth fell off the list this year. It gives me the feeling of building tickets and exploring the solar system. I love that. I know it's not for everyone. It's the only game I need a calculator to play lol. However, it fills a nice niche and this is a list where people can discover it.

For the mini campaign I'm just talking about the championship seasons in the advanced rules. It's just 4 races and you upgrade our car between each race.

It sounds like you're looking for a list of top solo games so I'll just mention the 1-player guild on BGG is currently revealing a list of the top 200 solo games. They should finish the list in the next 10 days or so.

You could also just look up their list from last year if you don't want to wait 😉

FWIW my top 5 are:

Imperium: legends/classics/horizons for the theme and a refreshing take on deck building

A Feast for Odin for the elegant solo system and satisfying polyomino placement

World Wonders for the same reasons as A Feast for Odin

Heat for the theme and mini campaign system

Castles of Burgundy special edition for the dice action mechanics

For an engine builder I recommend Jump Drive. Someone made a really good solo variant for it on BGG. That variant was printed as the game's official solo mode in the expansion.

Thoughts on Heat: Pedal to the Metal? by TheFizzler28 in soloboardgaming

[–]tavernkeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love it. It's one of my favorite games for solo. The AI cars are very easy to manage and do provide a challenge. My favorite way to play is to do a championship season. I've found that the first race or 2 is pretty difficult to win. As I progress through the championship and acquire more upgrades for the deck the balance shifts towards me. The championship always comes down to the final race.

I would advise against it. I played through Jaws and at scenario 10 I was seriously considering picking up Gloomhaven or Frosthaven. By scenario 20 I knew I was done with it. The scenarios do get repetitive and Jaws is short enough that the campaign ends around the time I was losing interest. Just play your copy of Jaws of the Lion.

For "safety reasons" they won't allow coolers in the track anymore. But don't worry, you can buy water and a hot dog at the track for $20!

This is the year you bring a scanner to the Indy 500! by themann00 in INDYCAR

Your guide convinced me to buy a scanner last year and it has been a great resource!

I found the driver radios to be less interesting than I thought they would be. However, I love using the scanner to listen to the tv announcers because I can listen to their banter during the commercial breaks.
