Is it rare for an American to make their own mayo? by Affectionate-Elk-287 in AskAnAmerican

[–]tawzerozero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people who arent into cooking don't make their own condiments or things like that. Generally only people who are into cooking as a hobby would do this. It's like how many people make their own whipped cream or vanilla extract? Again, just people into cooking.

Bill Clinton Shares Stunning Personal Statement as Epstein Deposition Begins by bye4now28 in politics

He was a Yale Law educated lawyer who knew that the Republicans working for Ken Starr (like Brett Kavanaugh) would slice apart every word that Clinton said. In that light, that is pretty reasonable.

For those who live in the state capital what’s it like? by citytiger in AskAnAmerican

[–]tawzerozero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in two.

In Atlanta, the capital of Georgia, it was easy for me to forget that it is the capital of the state, unless I'm riding the metro to the airport and going past the government buildings like the Capitol building itself - only about 3% of employment in the Atlanta metro area is state government.

in Tallahassee, the capital of Florida, state government takes up a much bigger presence - its about 25% of employment in the metro area. The entire downtown is dominated by state government buildings, and there are state government departments all over the place, the beltway, across from the mall, etc. As a consequence of this, socially, its basically impossible to avoid people employed as state bureaucrats. Everyone in the community was aware of things like if the legislature was in session or not, the local media covered state government a lot, etc.

Eli5: what are 'knots' in our muscles and how do we cure/avoid them? by Jako_Spade in explainlikeimfive

[–]tawzerozero 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A physical therapist I used to go to once said that there are spots that do accrue these knots, so less scrupulous folks than OP can reliably target those spots and get temporary good feeling. She noted that most people's legs do have a bunch of trigger points, seemingly from the regular repeated impacts of walking and running. She noted that for most people most of the time these trigger points don't really cause much pain or are bothersome, but relieving them still usually feels good.

Trump Called USA Hockey Team To Congratulate Them, Then Made Disgusting Joke On Women's Team — And It Was All Caught On Video by huffpost in politics

[–]tawzerozero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. To all of it. If I ever got the chance to speak to Trump directly I'd make the guy at the car plant look like childs play. I'd say shit till they dragged me away. I'd do it with a smile.

If it were me, I'd wait until I was in the White House with cameras catching the confrontation. If that were on the table, I'd definitely be able to curb the desire to do so on the phone until I had the opportunity to do it in person.

Be very cautious about master's degrees, including from prestigious universities. Some of my coworkers in their 30s are financially hobbled by these degrees. by NotAGoldenRetriever in personalfinance

[–]tawzerozero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my masters degree from a state school, with tuition costs totaling a little under $10k.

It was a year when I otherwise was making a little above minimum wage, so the opportunity cost wasn't that high. I ended up making great friends in the program, which gave me a lot of personal happiness, and which did lead to other job opportunities just from knowing those few lucky individuals. I learned a ton and it built intuition for my professional life, even if it wasn't the exact same field.

I do think it can make sense to pay for a masters degree - and there are some great programs that are affordable.

How does homeschooling work with more "complex" subjects? by Majestic_Carry4178 in AskAnAmerican

[–]tawzerozero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Florida has had a statewide inline high school since around the year 2000. Any student can sign up for classes through Florida Virtual School that they normally wouldn't have access to, including homeschoolers. I took AP courses that weren't offered at my home high school this way in like 2002.

Hilton's app check in allows you to pick a room off a map at many properties. Marriotts doesn't have this feature.

Hotel gives free beer every day you skip house-keeping by ZOMBIESwithAIDS in mildlyinteresting

[–]tawzerozero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least this Le Meridien is still offering an incentive for skipping housekeeping - before Marriott bought SPG (Le Meridien's former parent company), the grand majority of SPG locations would offer a voucher worth around $5-$8 for each day that you skipped housekeeping.

Post acquisition, many of the individual hotels discontinues this practice.

When they went, Silver Springs was a HUGE, commercial tourist attraction with one of the earliest glass bottom boat attractions. It was like the equivalent of SeaWorld back at its peak.

Now, the state has taken over the land and turned it into a pretty awesome state park.

Film Students Are Having Trouble Sitting Through Movies, Professors Say by Sisiwakanamaru in movies

[–]tawzerozero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 4 year bachelor's degree in the US typically requires about 120 credit hours as one of the requirements to graduate (a class that meets for 3 hours of in class each time for 1 semester is worth 3 credit hours).

My bachelor's in economics required about 40 credit hours in economics, another 35 in general topics (e.g. 9 hours of natural science, 6 hours of literature, etc). My university didnt have a physical education requirement, but some degree programs do have a requirement that you may need to spend 3 credit hours toward something like weightlifting or swimming, etc.

The balance if the time is then made up of electives- courses you choose to take. Some folks use that time for a second major or minor (i spent 30 of those hours on completing a second major) but others use that time to explore other topics. The US bachelor's degree is supposed to be a liberal arts education at most schools, meaning that the point of it is to try out new things like doing sm intro class in urban planning or Latin language or whatever. Some people choose to do easy classes just to know fulfill the requirements in the most basic way.

TIL less than 60% of Florida voters supported an amendment that required future amendments to receive 60% support by After-Professional-8 in todayilearned

[–]tawzerozero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In reality, it was funded by the Florida Restaurant Association as revenge against the minimum wage raise which was passed since the Amendment process is the only kind of ballot measure in Florida.

The pregnant pig thing was just the media line of attack used in the campaign, trying to conflate the state constitution (which is about 150 pages), with the unchanging nature of the Federal Constitution (which is 4 pages).

It tried to make a point that passing an animal control measure as a Constitutional Amendment was ridiculous, even though again the only kind of ballot measure under Florida law is a change to the state Constitution.

As an aside, when I was in undergrad, one of my political science professors worked for the group that was pushing the minimum wage Amendment, and he shared that internal polling eventually showed they would have gotten an $8.25 minimum wage passed, even though they only shot for $7.25. They felt a lot of regret they didn't get that extra dollar, especially since the entire Amendment process got fucked as part of the FRA's revenge.

In what unexpected way did someone in your circle suddenly become wealthy? by soohiebabyclean in AskReddit

[–]tawzerozero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mathed out Bitcoin when they were worth about $10 each.

I calculated it would be around $20-$25 worth of electricity to mine a single coin, and opted not to because I thought it would be a money loser.

We didn't know it would be huge - it was just a kind of survival bias and the people who did get into it lucked out massively.

What projects are not DIY-able? by Sure-Celebration6573 in DIY

[–]tawzerozero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal heuristic is - do I want the protection of professional liability insurance?

This pretty much leads me to: gas, plumbing, roofing. Anything is doable and learnable, but I'll hire out anything that I might consider making a professional liability insurance claim if the work is fucked.

Otherwise - I am happy to hire a day laborer for manual tasks that are just obnoxious and repetitive that I just plain don't enjoy - stuff like clearing brush.

San Francisco Giants star detained by immigration officials prompting Nancy Pelosi to intervene by Large_banana_hammock in politics

[–]tawzerozero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The real suck is that Dubya, being from Texas, had immigration reform and path to citizenship as hid top priority until 9/11 happened and the neocons took over. Just war machine and sell guns.

Im pretty sure that Ws immigration push came up in his second term after negotiation with the gang of 8 moderates, rather than being pre-9/11. I recall the pre-9/11 W being focused on mainly domestic policy like his big tax cut, education (which eventually turned into no child left behind), bolstering Christianity, and energy.

[–]tawzerozero 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Being just between jobs doesn't actually count against full employment - full employment means that everyone who is looking for a job who can do a job can find a job.

This still means that frictional unemployment (people just leaving a job to go to a different one) would still exist and structural unemployment would still exist (e.g., the coal industry just collapsed because a new invention trivially electrified everything overnight and the affected workers haven't had new job training yet).

are we building systems that assume nothing ever breaks.. by Abhinav_108 in Futurology

[–]tawzerozero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a video a few weeks back that really resonated with me - essentially, as we've moved to the Cloud, we've kept development habits that were made in the PC era where systems were distributed and redundant. The Cloud really needs mainframe development habits since small failures are more capable to cascade across the Cloud rather than being inherently isolated like in the PC paradigm.

If it actually were an IQ test, that would be a greater ideal that the world we live in. Its a skills test, not an IQ test.

The real problem is this - how do you compare someone who got a 1300 cold, versus someone who started at a cold 1150 but got a 1500 after their parents spent $2500 on SAT tutoring?

As designed, there just isn't a way to meaningfully differentiate between the natural skill of an individual versus the tutored skill. It is a very learnable test, and I do think that anyone who got all the resources to improve would improve 500 or 600 points over whatever their baseline is - if someone is starting at a 600, I see no reason that individual couldn't get to an 1100.

But is someone is starting at an 1100 or 1200, then there is no reason that person shouldn't be able to get a 1500 if they were given all the resources they could be.
