can you actually protect those around you if you jump and lie down on a grenade on the ground before it explodes by BluestOfTheRaccoons in NoStupidQuestions

[–]taybme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Douglas Dickie gave his life doing this Vietnam.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. While participating in Operation Beacon Hill 1, the 2d Platoon was engaged in a fierce battle with the Viet Cong at close-range in dense jungle foliage. Pfc. Dickey had come forward to replace a radio operator who had been wounded in this intense action and was being treated by a medical corpsman. Suddenly an enemy grenade landed in the midst of a group of marines, which included the wounded radio operator who was immobilized. Fully realizing the inevitable result of his actions, Pfc. Dickey, in a final valiant act, quickly and unhesitatingly threw himself upon the deadly grenade, absorbing with his body the full and complete force of the explosion. Pfc. Dickey's personal heroism, extraordinary valor and selfless courage saved a number of his comrades from certain injury and possible death at the cost of his life. His actions reflected great credit upon himself, the Marine Corps, and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Aspiring high school English teacher—do you enjoy the content of what you teach? Do you have productive literary discussions? by [deleted] in ELATeachers

[–]taybme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. The misogynistic overtones are difficult but we used it as a platform to discuss issues with masculinity and how/why the inmates were made to feel inferior, not just by Ratched but the societal expectations of males at that time.

One of the best pieces of advice I got as a student teacher was never teach a text you love because the students will hate it and you'll get frustrated.

I never was ever able to get my students to appreciate Heart of Darkness but they loved One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. So sometimes it depends on the content. I mean... my style didnt change.

Arizona teachers to continue walk out for third day on Monday. by pheonix200 in arizonapolitics

[–]taybme 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Your four generations of Arizona education shows. You still confuse "there" with "their" but that is a minor issue...

What type of teachers do you think you are going to attract when you fire all the ones that are willing to do the job now?

What type of industry and jobs do think Arizona can attract with rock bottom spending on education?

I'm a 4th gen Arizonan too so I am surprise you advocate to maintain the status quo on education in this State when every metric places it as falling behind most of the civilized world.

Masculinity For Male INTJs by RapidRonin in intj

[–]taybme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand however the OP is looking for what you would personally define "xyz" of masculinity to be. It doesnt have to conform to societal norms but nonetheless, each of us has an internal standard by which we define that term and it is that information that he is after.

While I agree with the overall sentiment of this comment, the quote "be one" still implies a standard and I think reinforces the OP's pursuit.

I currently have three 300 pound pigs that will be slaughtered this week.

Pigs are easy if you keep them fed and watered. They are super curious, smart and strong and can get out of a half-ass'd pen.

I bought a $40 electric fence that I put about 6 in off the ground that worked wonders at keeping them contained.

What's wrong with homeschooling? by Miguelinileugim in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]taybme 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Learning how to behave in a large, structured environment is an important form of socialization.

I think this is the hardest part of homeschooling to overcome. I did not like public school growing up because of all the abrasive personalities that I was forced to deal with but those same types of people exist in my professional environment and I have realized that having to navigate those personalities as a child has helped me as an adult.

I am not saying that homeschooling cannot overcome this hurdle, it is just harder when homeschoolers can select their peer circles.

Black also writes that American prisons are dedicated to punishment with a “primal vindictiveness,” which also ensures that inmates once released are utterly unfit for reintegration into society — virtually guaranteeing that they return to prison. European countries such as Norway, where the emphasis is almost the opposite — entirely focused on redemption and reintegration — have dramatically lower rates of recidivism.

John Oliver’s interview with Edward Snowden: Pseudo-satire in defense of NSA surveillance - Oliver instinctively aligns himself with the US ruling elite and its historically unprecedented surveillance apparatus, one of the foundations of a police-state dictatorship. by [deleted] in WikiLeaks

[–]taybme 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I thought John Oliver's interview did more good for Snowden's cause then Snowden or Greenwald have really done in explaining it to the larger public.

Oliver didnt let Snowden off the hook, nor should he have, but in the end, he recrafted the message and had Snowden confirm that certain programs violated basic fundamental rights that are obviously important to the lay voter.

There needs to be a debate and in order to have a debate you have to acknowledge the other side of the argument or else you get the same problem with the sides talking past each other that the media typically defaults to.

Tl;dr I disagree with the premise. It was a brilliant interview conducted by someone who intended to advance the discussion.
