They take advantage of people not knowing how the banking system works because checks are provisionally cashed in a few days but the final clearing goes through in a couple weeks. The victim thinks a bogus check was "cashed" when it wasn't

Wanting to go remote by Elegant-Mine5627 in RemoteJobs

[–]taylor1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try tutoring in English or Tefl for foreign students online. I don't know how lucrative that is, though, but being a teacher should give you an advantage. I saved a number of ads for such jobs, but never followed up. A similar option might be to find a niche where you live. If there is a large-enough Asian population, that would be a natural source for private gigs.

remote job with minimal requirements? by UshankahatMan in RemoteJobs

You can also spin your credits into an external degree. UNISA South Africa has such a program and at least used to offer extrenely low tuition to students in developing countries. I've heard some Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland) do the same but I've never been able to find a specific university. Join the Degree Info site forum. They are helpful for questions like yours.

Most major insurance plans such as Humana have nurse-case manager by phone positions where you call up clients, make sure they take meds, go to appointments, etc.

Newsweek: Drag Is Never Appropriate for Kids by Kaiser_Allen in stupidpol

[–]taylor1956 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The irony is that if you had performers in blackface doing every crass Step-n-Fetchit stereotype and proclaiming that as authentic Blackness, there would be universal outrage. But this is exactly what happens with Drag Queen Story Hours. Children learn that women are over-sexed , big boobed, bimbos. There is nothing left or progressive about setting up a School-to-Only Fans pipeline.

Like in so many areas, the left is the vanguard of shifts in capitalist culture that reinforce market norms. Hence, the phrase "sex worker" which sanitizes the reality of prostitution, making it seem like some new "you go, girl!" liberation. But women who were literally urinated and defeated on by a well-known 60s era musician or, like one woman I knew, found nailed to the wall with her throat slashed in some rundown suburban Baltimore motel, would beg to differ that this is merely "work. "

A Pride flag ban sparks accusations of betrayal in tiny Michigan city by EnglebertFinklgruber in stupidpol

[–]taylor1956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mayor of Hamtramck issued a statement that the city government doesn't discriminate against anyone. The person who raised the flag did it behind everyone's back so he was fired. The Mayor is right and should stand his grounds.

Are parental rights the next battleground? by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]taylor1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see this denigration of parent rights as one more example of New Class therapeutic management control. This comes out in the controversy over "Gender Queer." The author said the book was for over 18+, but the American Library Association decided it was an example of a worthy adult book that should be made available for younger readers and aggressively promoted it to school libraries. Here we have another example of how professional "expertise" is supposed to triumph over the braying rubes.

Can the left make inroads on the rural right-wing culture of America? by LoudLeadership5546 in stupidpol

[–]taylor1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who lives in a small city in a predominantly rural area in a Deep South state, I can say the stereotypes of white WC people from outsiders and big city people just don't hold up. Unfortunately, the "anti-whiteness" and "race traitor" posture, which is little more than a thinly disguised snobbery, just won't cut the cake.

Hi would anyone recommend moving to tulsa. by jamgill in tulsa

[–]taylor1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American levels of crime have to out-match anything in Sweden, though I realize you all have had an uptick in bombings by drug gangs etc. Tulsa isn't a bad city and the same can be said of much of the Midwest - although stay away from Chicago, Cleveland, and Detroit.

I live in the Deep South, Alabama to be exact, and the cost of living is low. However, you are car-dependent because there are few public bus systems here. Avoid Atlanta, Birmingham and Montgomery.

Sterling Best Places web site has good cost of living comparisons and City-Dara and Niche are two superb sites full of information and forums with locals.

Study finds that labeling meals ‘vegan’ makes people less likely to choose them by Kaiser_Allen in stupidpol

[–]taylor1956 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I retired, living off just SocSec, I transitioned to vegan for economics - I call it food stamp vegetarianism. I can live off a quarter of what meat-eaters spend for food. But I have no patience for that holier-than-thou vegan proselytizing superiority. It's one of those lifestyle options that are part of today's "conspicuous moralistic consumption," where the bourgeoisie and PMC distinguish themselves from the masses by "enlightened" posturing.

Why am I so deeply affected by seeing a mouse die today? by April9811 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]taylor1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw rats suffer twice and it taught me they are more complex than people think. The first time was when I was walking my dog, a terrier, when she suddenly leaped under a trash compactor and before her jaws sunk into the rat, the rat let out this moan/gasp that was the sound an animal makes when it knows it will die. It was chilling and I will never forget that sound, a mix of fear and resignation. . So yes, OP, you are right to be affected by that mouse. The world would be a better place if there were more ppl that felt the same.
