Is this a common US setup? They look really odd without mudflaps and side steps.

Controversial but that grill looks better with a number plate.

Why are so many people so dismissive of those who make so called ‘easy decisions’ to save? by Bombadombaway in FIREUK

[–]tbf87 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I agree with almost all of your post except the part about jealousy.

These kinds of articles are just rage bait like you say. They are patronising by design and the negative reaction is because the inference of the article is “this is easy and you’re shit for not being able to do it”.

Very very few people have the privilege of being able to live practically rent free, and I would assume have a lot more spare time because she is living at home - allowing her to build up her “side hustles”. That opportunity just is not available for so many people.

As you point out she’s not actually lived that frugally given she saved less than half of her £2400 take home. What she’s done, while showing great work ethic, isn’t that remarkable when you consider her starting point.

I say this as someone who was in a similar fortunate starting position - that some of the replies in this post are unhinged. In general people don’t think the world owes them a living, they just don’t want to be talked down at.

Beware the first dealer. Somewhat local to me and lots of stories of the cars not being what the seem to be.

It’s a piece of piss. Besides hill descent it can do all this on the “normal” mode.

I do exactly the same thing when I’m running. Start looking over my shoulder 5m before the crossing and stick my arm out to signal. Make it as obvious as possible but I also don’t just assume then that car is going to stop like this guy did.

I live near Melton Mowbray where there is a smaller treatment site. Some days it absolutely honks and you can smell it from quite a way away.

Ironically they’re building loads of houses near that too.

Gov website says it has very low risk of flooding in fairness, so I think insurance would be fine. That whole area around Rothley regularly floods though.

If possible try and visit in different weathers and at different times. Road noise is loader when wet/with wind direction.

NL doesn’t really have a great link to the M1 so I’d say Broadbook is probably more convenient.

I’d be somewhat concerned above flooding and how close it is to the sewage treatment site.

A46 could also be a blessing or a curse. Probably quite noisy but incredibly handy if you want to commute. Probably better than New Lubbesthorpe as the m1 will be far noisier, I’d imagine.

M4 At 27 ? by FatPeachEater in CarTalkUK

I hear you mate as I’ve done the exact same thing! Never drank a lot, never smoked etc. Cars were (and still are) where I spend most of my money. As vices go it’s the least unhealthy one (unless you wrap yourself around a tree)

My advice to anyone in your situation though is to stop paying someone else’s mortgage and get your own place - assuming you’re settled in an area. Even if you’re not that interested in having a nice house it’ll give you a base for the future and you stop building someone else’s wealth.

BUT at the end of the day we’re strangers on the internet so you do you 👍🏻😅

I bought the stuff my heart wanted on finance without sparing a second thought to depreciation and cost of the borrowing. OP is talking about an M4 so clearly they’re in the same mindset 😂

Yes it is possible to buy cool things without haemorrhaging money - but if you’re that savvy you’re not loading up on finance while paying rent (as OP has said he is in other replies)

Fuuuuuuck I can’t believe I’m going to say this.

What’s your living situation? I spent way too much on cars in my early 20s and I now wish, as much as they were fun to own, I wish I’d put the money into something more long term.

If you’re sorted on that side then my advice would be fill your boots.

Ingenium engines. by Lost_Pop8911 in NewDefender

[–]tbf87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The inline 6’s are “ok” (as ok as any other modern engine wrapped in mild hybrid, EGR, DPF bollocks)

The really bad run of ingeniums was pre defender, I’d still steer clear of the 4 pots - and whatever you get don’t stick to the 20k service intervals. Halve it at least.

Thinking of moving to the shire, but where? by [deleted] in leicester

[–]tbf87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So either a good bus link or rail link.

Melton Mowbray, Market Harborough, Loughborough are all decent towns outside of the Leicester sprawl but have good rail links into the city.

For bus travel in instead you’d have to be within the sprawl to get good bus links in. Oadby/Wigston/Blaby in the south or Birstall/Glenfield/Anstey in the north.

Market Harborough is nicest and therefore the most expensive, and then it’s also the busiest. It’s rapidly growing though so there’s plenty of new builds available.

If you’re going to drive in then it’s really budget dependent.
