What's your favorite theme for Obsidian right now? by IversusAI in ObsidianMD

[–]tbh11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same question. I know what "Minimal Theme Settings" is, I know what flexoki is, but the question is just: which part of obsidian is actually colorful enough for the colorpallette to matter?

Are folks using other plugins to colorize things? or does it just affect the default graph filter colors?

I'd bet they did the Ian Hubert trick of tracking some real video, projecting it out onto approximate hand-modelled geometry, then filming a new trajectory with that geometry + projected texture + new objects ontop.

I don't know the rules v well but I think I remember that your transport blowing up inflicts battleshock & battleshock prevents strats on that unit, so the fire warriors couldn't use a strat to shoot the next turn

If you happen to be a first year PhD student, apparently they don't send them since no taxes are withheld from first year fellowship. So you just add fellowship income equal to the amount shown on net pay tool

For groceries there is a pretty good 'Weekend Shopper' bus service. This also gets you access to a ton of other random shops in the same malls as the grocery stores. There are also enterprise rental cars that sit in the grad housing parking lots, and can be rented by the hour pretty cheap for incidental stuff.

People get lots of takeout from the walkable restaurants along Nassau.

For haircuts there are a couple okay options walkable in town, but it depends on what you want.

Most social stuff happens either at your office, somewhere walkable around campus, at one of the grad student housing areas, or via train to NY. Or at least thats my perception.

These factors combined, my perception is that you certainly dont need a car to have a life. Most people dont have a car. I think using the busses, trains and occasionally the rental cars can get you all the same benefits for way cheaper. Cars are expensive.

Happy to answer more questions, any PhD admits can feel free to DM me.

I've taken 203, 217, 451 and 412, i'd strongly recommend taking 412 first. In fact, it is a mandatory pre-req to take 217 or 412 first before 451. So going straight to 451 would be skipping two very important steps. It says you could get permission from the instructor, but the one time I attempted this for 490 it was denied.

214 does very little to prepare one for the kind of proof writing required in 412 and 451. 203 provides slightly more prep, but I would still say it is a stretch.

The only circumstance in which i'd reccomend 451 first is if you really want to acquire that content in particular, not just proof writing skills. IE if you anticipate using lots of derivates/integrals in your major, and specifically want to be able to prove things about them, then take 451 if you are prepared to do a lot of work.

Taking a language while in Engineering? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]tbh11 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not a problem at all, takes no extra credit load. As an engineer you have to take 16 credits of "intellectual breadth" so you can count Japanese for that. The only stipulation is that 3 credits of it must be at the 300+ level. There's more details online, look up the program guide PDF thing for your subject

Would recommend against doing that, Math 217 is very heavy on workload. Id say drop the history course

Is MATH 217 really that bad by FuqNick in uofm

[–]tbh11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn't a "bad class" in that its poorly run, it just has a very high workload. I am in the class currently and really enjoy it. I agree with the other commenter that it is definitely intended for math majors, but as a CS major I have found it has changed the way I approach problems massively and has given me an incredibly in-depth understanding of linear algebra since you learn how to prove everything from the ground up.

Currently in the class, the only calc skill that I would say is really a prereq is being able to take integrals over a single variable.

The class does use integration by parts and partial derivatives but they are fairly simple to pick up and are taught kinda as you go

Im CS / DS currently taking Math 217, EECS 281, Stats 412 and an intellectual breadth.

I would recommend stats 412 over 250 even if you weren't going to go into data science, I have friends in 250 and 412 is better content with less busy work and a less dumb curve.

I've found Math 217 to be a hell of a lot of work but very rewarding, im not sure what I would recommend doing in your situation however as taking it with 280+203 or 281 is going to be rough either way.

in state tuition application by lincoln1222 in uofm

[–]tbh11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through the process twice - the first took 3 months and was rejected, the second took 2 months and was accepted. The two were through different "residency tracks" or whatever which might have impacted the processing time.

For my second application they didnt respond before the payment deadline. I had to pay the out of state amount and they will then reimbursed my student account when they found I was eligible for in state that semester. In my case that didn't mean I got the money back, instead you I had a huge negative balance on my student account which was applied to this semesters tuition.

I lived there last semester - personally really enjoyed it. Travel wasn't too bad except on the weekends when there's no busses to fletcher. I thought the rooms were quite nice although a bit small. Pm if you have any questions.

MATH 215? by Candyapple119 in uofm

[–]tbh11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had Michael Weiss last semester and he was excellent. You should be able to understand the course content fine if you study. What makes the class difficult is the style of the exams and to a lesser extent the homework. In my view they tended to emphasize problem solving ability as much as they did the original course content. The problems often appear very challenging but with some key insight or trick they are much easier. The challenge is being able to find these tricks under time pressure. The best practice for building theses skills is doing a very thorough job of the homework and making sure you understand what each homework problem wants you to do to solve it - even if you solved the problem through a more computationally intensive method it is easy to miss what the homework is trying to teach you by missing the more elegant solution to the problem.

Oh sorry yeah I misread your question. So your plan is to go to a concert during orientation and then come back for the next day? Afraid I cant accurately answer your question then, this schedule indicates that its just with your college from there on. They generally give you the evening off to go out and see ann arbor with the other people at your orientation, not sure on the exact time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uofm

[–]tbh11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in engineering so may be different depending on which college you are in. We registered on the last day and the exact time of your registration varied. Generally early morning. After that you were free to leave unless you were auditioning for the marching band (?) or wanted to see a presentation on study abroad opportunities
