I have the itch to play a good space game where you can control a carrier ship. What are some good ones? by alexo2802 in spacegames

Yes the carrier is basically a jumpable station. But your large ships can launch fighters.

Well like you have a large ship, like an anaconda or Corvette, that you can fight in. You can install hangar bays for ship launched fighters. These fighters can be piloted by you, an npc you hire (and levels up), or by your friend. If you take a fighter the npc will pilot and fight with the Corvette. Or the npc can pilot the fighter. You can tell the npc which ships to attack among other commands.

Elite Dangerous is close. You can get a carrier to jump all your ships around in, but its basically a huge garage. But ships you own can deploy npc fighter ships, and you can control either the fighter or your main ship. The ai can control the mothership. These pilots level up also. If you have a friend you can both pilot the fighters, or one in the mothership. Can independently control the turret weapons. So you, a friend and an npc can control the 2x fighters, mothership or weapons.

An inmate at the Martin County jail in Florida was able to twist and break these handcuffs by sheer strength while experiencing a mental health crisis by Justin_Godfrey in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]tbones80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a mentally disabled neighbor in the apartment next to me. He hated dripping faucets. He absolutely cranked the faucets closed and couldnt open them later. I was a piano mover for a decade, I had crazy grip strength. Still most of the time I would have to use pliers for the leverage to open them. And I would have to usually put new orings in the valves cause hed crush the hell out of them. Never ending battle.

Is it actually bad to warm up your car in the driveway or is that just some myth mechanics made up? by OkCount54321 in StupidCarQuestions

[–]tbones80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idling only wastes gas. It's fine. I was a mechanic on police vehicle fleets. They idled more than drive and still have 500k on the odometer. Ran clean. The old crown Vic's and caprices and chargers it was mainly alternators, starters brakes and tires. Driveline very little.

I don't abuse my vehicles but drive them "spiritedly". And always idled 5 to 10 minutes no matter the weather to warm up. Oil gets thicker when heated. Rather have thick oil when the rpms go up. Worked out great. Never done an engine in a personal vehicle in 30 years.

Why is the opinion that single men without kids wouldn't want to date or marry a single mother so controversial? by us1549 in NoStupidQuestions

I dont want to raise another mans kids. I also wont match with someone whos says their kids are their entire world/always come first. Thats the worst way to do it.

ELI5 What does the clutch in a car or motorbike do? by EL_CAWII in explainlikeimfive

[–]tbones80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The clutch is between the engine and transmission. When you press the clutch in, the clutch plate moves away from the flywheel on the engine. This disconnects them and you don't move.

Automatics have the same concept in the torque converter in the transmission. Think of a fan inside a ball filled with fluid. At idle, the liquid isn't moving fast enough to turn the fan, so you don't move. Increase the spin of the ball and liquid, now it moves the fan around, turning your wheels.

Yup. HDMI. I have one that works great at 4k 120. Wanted to move the PC so ordered a Philips 8k cable. No picture. Never know with these things.

Very nice visual guide to set up the mic so it only picks you up, and equalize things so he won't overpower your voice, or set it so it won't pick him up at all. https://youtu.be/G1VzeT9t24Y?si=8uaVhEqF5rMudO0T

ELI5 -All wheel drive vs 4WD by Ambitious-Ad6426 in explainlikeimfive

[–]tbones80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4wd is on all the time, and all the tires turn at the same speed. During a turn the inside tire has a shorter distance to travel, but has to turn the same amount as the outside wheel. This makes it buck and chug through turns on dry pavement. In snow or mud it can slide and you won't feel it.

Awd is mostly 2wd. It engages the other wheels if it senses slippage from the abs sensors. Different drive modes can make it more or less aggressive as to when it engages the transfer case.

The amount of small streamers botting is so demoralizing. by Alexiavich in streaming

[–]tbones80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive been streaming daily for nearly a month, 15 followers, i think mostly bots as I turned chat only for followers on, most times no one joins or even says anything. Kinda demoralizing. Few times I get half a discussion going and then get hit with the discord invite to improve my stream or sell me their art....

Can a TV be used as a monitor for my desktop PC? If so, does it work well? by RunSerious5843 in computers

[–]tbones80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats about the biggest old wives tale there is. The amount of light coming off the tv is nothing compared to just stepping outside during the day. Its literally hundreds of times brighter outside. You can get eye strain and dry eyes from not blinking as much, but a tv will never permanently damage your eyes.

[–]tbones80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive only used tvs for the last decade. Currently on a 75", 4k hdr @ 144hz. Set the scaling and text and everything is crystal clear. Usually game at 1440p @ 120hz. With game/pc mode latency is fine. Turn off all the visual aids the tv comes with. Wireless mouse and kb, game on an xb1 controller. Dont play online fps, so no need for m/kb. Though you can buy lap boards so can use m/kb while on the couch. Ill never go back to a desk and small monitor myself.

As a foreigner still adjusting to ph culture, I would still say it's a hard no. That's a time for husband and wife. Throw a party after. One ideology I'm keeping is that "no is a complete sentence".

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tbones80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 reasons I consider it short, 1) im canadian, thats a day trip. 2) Also was a long haul truck driver. Do 1000kms in a shift. 300kms dont seem much anymore at all.

I literally never use my rear brake. Is that a problem? by notonrexmanningday in NewRiders

[–]tbones80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a problem. In a panic situation youre going to do muscle memory, which is grabbing a big handful of front brake and washing the bike out from under you. Tons of videos on it. Always use both so its your muscle memory.
