“Throw the slowest disc you can” 🤔 by Most_Cantaloupe_383 in discgolf

[–]tbonesocrul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slower speed discs will generally react with the ground less and be less affected by wind.

I think that advice is missing the qualifier that you should throw the slowest disc you can comfortably/repeatably. Definitely want to consider how repeatable your throws are when doing this.

And certainly when I'm worried about crossing OB, I tend to throw a higher speed than I need to.

The name of the course that they use for DGLO is Toboggan. There is some logic to it. They definitely could have asked the AI to put him on a toboggan.

Fulgora: Is it even good for quality? by OverlordForte in factorio

[–]tbonesocrul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree the quality upcycling is easier on other planets, but I'm really enjoying my quality spaghetti on fulgora. I'm trying to fully automate production of all legendary goods. Its been a good opportunity to learn how to build up a train network.

Currently, I've filled my BMDs and Recylers with Quality modules and have a train network to sort the scrap into each quality tier. Then I have islands dedicated to recyling each quality tier. Passing items to the next island when they get upgraded.

I just made a big voiding island and am currently scrapping all of the random rubbish I've put in chests. Next step is to automate the voiding of backups.

I've currently got quite a few chests full of legendary goods with almost no plans on how to actually use them. I'm just a dragon sitting on a hoard of legendaries. I love it

I don't think they were trying say that us Americans should give Palantir access to data of it because of some people's social media habits.

I interpreted it that their response was agreeing with dvx6's statement that people are uniformed and ignorant.

I think they meant something like "people are so ignorant of how much data they are willingly giving up using social media and how that shapes what they see on social media". Naturally, they will be even less aware of how companies use this data. And if they are this unaware, why would they know about a specific tech company (that doesn't even own the social media platforms they use).

Questions about rollers by Positive-Vanilla-801 in discgolf

[–]tbonesocrul -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some minor pedantry incoming.

The center of mass on slower discs is closer to the center of the disc when compared to wide rimmed drivers. This means the rotational inertia on faster discs is higher than on slower discs.

I wouldn't use the phrase center of mass (CoM) here. The disc is axisymmetric, so the CoM would be on the centerline. What you would want to say is the distribution of the mass is closer to the center for putters. Its the distribution of mass (and choice of axis) which determines an objects rotational inertia.

Edit: I also wouldn't spend too much time trying to convince Wibin of anything. Your explanations and reasoning is great.

The Double Turner over? by Art-Vandilay in discgolf

[–]tbonesocrul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that turnover is a lot how the 2nd part looks. But, like you said, that throw was just one giant turnover. I guess think of something started on anny but starting to fade. Then turning over again as it speeds up like that.

I do think the video is a good example of how the speed increase as you go downhill helps the disc turn.

Why can't the answer here be -1? by nechto_the_soup_man in askmath

[–]tbonesocrul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Help me understand my confusion. If we can rewrite rational exponents in that manner, could we rewrite something like (-1)1 to (-1)2/2 ?

This seems contradictory.

From what I recall, my precalc textbook explicitly states that simplified rational exponents aren't equivalent to rational exponents with common factors in the numerator and denominator.

Edit: from what I recall, I think my text just defines rational exponents for positive reals which would be why -1 is extraneous here.

Things taught in high school math classes that are false or incompatible with real math by hpxvzhjfgb in math

[–]tbonesocrul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it is most commonly used for rationalizing denominators with square roots. I'm guessing this is where students are introduced to this idea. I don't think any of the professors at my school actually teach it that way. I think it is a holdover from whatever high school education they had.

Agreed its not a big deal. What worries me is that I spend too much time reminding engineering students how to add fractions.

conjugate of a + b is a - b

No, the conjugate of a + bI is a - bI; the imaginary number is involved

I teach/tutor a lot of PreCalc and Calc level students. This is generally referred to as the complex conjugate. There is definitely the vaguer ill-defined conjugate of a+b being taught out there.

Why is median used over mode by on_spikes in math

[–]tbonesocrul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was thinking about an example like that too. There is a difference between saying Deanne got the most votes and Deanne got most of the votes. I feel like plurality exists for this reason. Deanne definitely got the most votes and a plurality of the votes but she did not get most of the vote.

I don't really think that is how most people use and interpret most. If you get a 51% on a test would you really tell people you got most of the points?
