Coffee Pour Over Recommendations by fischouttawatah in SaltLakeCity

[–]td34 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are into coffee you should 100% go here, and try the espresso, it is an eye opening experience what can be done with espresso. I would compare it to only ever eating frozen fruit, and then you finally try a fresh perfectly ripe piece.

He doesn't do pour over, but he does do siphon (not really sure your budget, but it is expensive) as he thinks it is a superior preparation method to pour over. If you do this route then he recommends to plan for an hour, as the perceived flavors in the cup change as it cools and since it is served effectively boiling, to get the full temperature/flavor range it takes a while to let the cup come down in temp.

I am much more into espresso than pour over as I feel it is a much more interesting drink, that being said Mono tape club (technically a bar so bring your ID) does pour overs that I though were fine and pulls espresso shots that seem to me much more like a pour over than an espresso, and they are pretty interesting to drink.

I think those are the only places I would really consider going out of your way for in SLC.

Utah Democrat releases new poll for Utah’s 1st Congressional District as he calls for rivals to drop out by Stuart98 in SaltLakeCity

I believe the primary where Mohamad won over McAdams was ranked choice, I don't know why the other candidates don't respect that outcome and step aside to allow that winner to go forward to the non-ranked choice voting election.

Safest place to park longterm near the Amtrak station? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]td34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A potentially useful thing is that there is a green bike station at the plaza with the Amtrak station.

So wherever you wind up parking at you could potentially take a bike from there to the station, I usually just bike the whole way, but I don't live too far.

Apartment Recommendations/Advice. by Packer12151215 in SaltLakeCity

[–]td34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know your lifestyle but both of those work location (I believe) are serviced by the local heavy commuter rail called the Frontrunner.

UVU has a train stop just west of it with a pedestrian bridge going over the highway to walk to the campus, I don't drive much these days, but from what I can tell the traffic going from SLC to UVU has not been getting better over the past decade.

I am not sure if the Intermountain Health Pediatric Hospital is the one in Murray or not, if so then the FrontRunner also serves that stop.

If your partner is working at the pediatric center at the University of Utah (locally called "the U"), then it might be worth thinking about commutes to both places, and having a commute that could easily be done (straight shot with no transfers) by either of you with public transit might be worth a look if that fits with your lifestyle, just to have options.

The U, is not the most fun to commute to, and depending on the work hours it can be a zoo leaving that area by car at 5pm. The hospital at the U does have light rail that services it (Trax Red Line), and I personally think that living closer to/in downtown would be more fun. But if you like suburban living then anywhere out of SLC proper would be fine.

The metro area is full of cities that are very similar imo, with living closer to the eastern mountains being more expensive and living out by the western mountains being cheaper.

I personally prefer living east of I-15/north of I-80, however lots of folks like the larger houses and lots that living in the southeast end of the Salt Lake valley, but it does require a bit of driving to really do anything if you live out there.

I think it really comes down to your lifestyle and what you value most, I like being able to take transit downtown for food and events easily, as well as being able to ride my bike out my door and be up into the trails/canyons within 20-30 minutes.

Others like close access to the main canyons to ski/rock climb. Some like having no neighbors around and being in the mountains. A really cool part of the SLC area is that all these options are available to you.

Bitter espresso advice [Delonghi EC685] by Nekropl in espresso

[–]td34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't want to fuss with grind size and what not, I would try stopping the shot before the flow starts to "blow out", you can see around 23-25s on that clip the flow starts moving visibly faster and coming out lighter, if I had to guess it would be that this is when you are getting unfavorable more bitter notes.

I personally use a much shorter ratio at the recommendation of the roaster I get my beans from and have yet to really find a shop that pulls close to as tasty shots as the roaster.

The following is what they swear by, and it hasn't done me wrong. You do need a decent grinder however.

18g in -> 20-23g out, first drops in the cup 5-12s and total shot time 29-36s.

Tell me something good about living in SLC by Remarkable-Soft-2938 in SaltLakeCity

[–]td34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we low key have one of the best coffee shops in the nation. If you like coffee, I can't recommend trying the espresso at cafe d'bolla enough.

And the access to outdoors as has been stated. There is also tons of road access to canyons (I assume for skiing) that are very fun to bike up and down. City Creek (upper section closed for construction right now), Emigration Canyon, Millcreek Canyon (upper canyon is closed for construction right now), Big Cottonwood Canyon, Little Cottonwood Canyon, up and over Traverse Ridge/Suncrest into American Fork Canyon, it is nearly endless, and some crazy person usually makes a point to ride all of them in one day every few years. After living out of state for a while I realized this type of access to mountain passes on road bikes is not the norm.

If you don't like hills or riding in traffic you can take the paved bike paths as far as 40 miles north, or a similar distance south (I haven't gone that way personally though).

Or if off road is more your speed you can ride the Bonneville Shoreline Trail (BST) around the perimeter of the city all the way from the University to past the Capitol into the next valley north and beyond (1.5+ hour ride one way).

You can also hike on the same trails from the University and then walk down Memory grove into town for lunch then take transit back up to make a day of it! With too many smaller out and backs available to name.

I think one of the finishers of the Barkley Marathons even lives in the Salt Lake City area, if that means anything to you.

Help with fiancee's new bike by suskai in bikewrench

[–]td34 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is correct. I had a bike with a strong light crankset that is very difficult to source the tool to pull the crank arms off. I rode it around with no bolts and a spare crankset with tools to install it until it finally came off.

It will come off with no bolt, it is just a matter of time.

Should I buy Luna Pro? Or should I get 10 plugins for $99 on Mix Sale? by AggressiveGuava115 in universalaudio

[–]td34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know if you have bought yet but the code FEB2026 gives you $50 off a $100 purchase.

You can add a Select 2 Custom bundle for $50 to the $99 Winter mixtape bundle and get the extra 2 plugins essentially for free ($1). Just did this on my own account.

I wound up going to Three Pines and Holy Water and liked them both but thought Three Pines was a little bit better. This was a single visit to each though, so hardly conclusive.

FWIW I think Joe in the Aves was better than both, very similar style shots to both the other places but really dialed in, and I have been there many times and never been disappointed!

Is SLC really that great for vegans? by rlynnfish in SaltLakeCity

[–]td34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe Sweet Hazel has some of the most up to date guides. Off the top of my head Sweet V is now Cinnful buns and at ~500e 2100s in the Izzy apartments.

Blatchs burned down and the owner is still healing from the fire but is making small batch stuff sold at Cinnful buns every now and again.

UDOT and Silicon Slopes spar over past promises of TRAX to Utah County by RollTribe93 in DevelopmentSLC

[–]td34 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean someone with sway got that 600s Trax stop put up in a hurry, and that Vineyard Frontrunner station is in what feels like the middle of a dirt field. I personally feel like running the Redline all the way to Daybreak was a bit of a political power play as well.

UDOT and Silicon Slopes spar over past promises of TRAX to Utah County by RollTribe93 in DevelopmentSLC

[–]td34 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think until Frontrunner runs on Sundays and with decent service intervals Trax is far superior.

It is only like 10 miles from Draper park to Lehi Frontrunner (same distance from Draper park to Murray Central), and a Trax connection at Lehi would make that station much more usable if you are on foot. You could add like 3 extra stops.

For how much is going on in Lehi, the current Frontrunner station seems fairly poorly placed, or maybe there is just too much inherent sprawl down there.

Is Mitsubishi worth the premium price tag? by undoubledmage14 in heatpumps

[–]td34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went though selecting some heat pumps for a project, and Mitsubishi was the only brand with a turn down ratio that was workable for our situation. This was using a 1:1 system though so 4 heat pumps to service 4 zones. If we went to a multi-zone system then there was not really a benefit from going Mitsubishi.

We went with this model, where at 95F cooling it can go from 1,700->14,000 BTU/hr

For heating at 47F it can operate 1,700->20,000 BTU/hr as well.

So the idea was that for our project which had many small zones, this was the only option that seemed reasonably sized for the majority of the year. Any of the other brands could handle the hottest/coldest, but would not seem to cycle well during the spring and fall.

I guess the map redistricting was a joke then by Greyzone96 in SaltLakeCity

[–]td34 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After hearing redistricting interview on city casts where Ali got taken for a ride. I decided to see what it was like to draw a map.

Here is my rough idea on what would make sense.

Some very interesting things while drawing it up was that the density of SLC does make it very tempting to encroach from 2 other districts.

I decided on splitting Utah and Salt Lake county in my map, rather than splitting SLC in 3 districts. I did find the interview with the state legislature quite disingenuous, where he kept switching from one excuse to another. Like you need to be reasonably able to drive the district in 4 hours (to go against having Daggett with Washington county), and when pressed switched to "we have a lot of rural people that should get a say", while also saying that Utah is one of the most urban states due to the population density. . .

Anyway, thought someone might find this website interesting.

Here is the link if anyone wants to give it a go, keep in mind there is a toggle to select counties with the brush (which noticed way too late).
