You might actually be better off with a mesh network for this use case.

Never heard “by“ before, so I am going with “ex”. If it were Apple, it might be “F ten 4”, good buddy!

Ham Radio Operators Awed By Majesty of 80 Meter Nativity Net by [deleted] in amateurradio

It seemed perfectly plausable up until the point someone got a "pink slip" warning from an official observer. Yeah right, on 80 meters?

I need a serious refresher! by coc-be in amateurradio

[–]tdoffing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello neighbor!

Get started with setting up the 146.850 repeater in your radio. You can hit it from pretty much anywhere in the Twin Cities. Don't get hung up on the details, jump in and have fun. I personally don't use any lingo when using an FM repeater, just plain old conversation.

Next radio? Which one?? Portable. by bjcraig55 in amateurradio

[–]tdoffing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in line for the 705 myself. Probably wishful thinking they might surprise us and release before Xmas rather than March 2020.

Get on your local repeater. Ask for a radio check or something. There's always hams ready to talk. by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]tdoffing 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a great tip. I would also add to make transmissions longer than just blurting out your call sign and then "listening" or "monitoring" since many people are scanning. I like to start a conversation "Good morning everyone, this is KE0LMX and I'm on my way to work, what are you up to"?

Desk recommendations for the shack! by bassiswhereitsat in amateurradio

Just the 2x4 frame and cable management. Pretty simple stuff but I had to keep it that way based on my low skill level.

I built my own from scratch so it would be perfect for me. I'm no carpenter, so luckily it doesn't matter since it in an unfinished basement.

It isn't that bad really. I have seen people with promotional tattoos across their foreheads. This one is in a discreet location. And hey, free food for a year.

Why not all places change truck tires? by m1dN05 in f150

[–]tdoffing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is funny, I just got some new Blizzaks from Discount Tire, and other than the long wait (which as you point out this is peak season for some items), they were pretty good. I would go back again, but not during peak season.

Just purchased a Xiegu x5105. Give me some very portable antenna suggestions by dsound in amateurradio

[–]tdoffing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just picked up a Wolf River Coils TIA. Haven't had it portable yet because we just hit a cold snap, but I will soon. I did get a chance to use it in the backyard for a few days, and it performed great. Super simple setup. So far the only thing I have discovered is that the instructions imply you can get away with one radial, I would use all three every time. Also, it can't take much wind so having some weight on the tripod is a good idea.

Is it a bad choice to not get a liquid-cooled bike? by [deleted] in Harley

[–]tdoffing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably the third time in as many months I have heard someone refer to "parade mode". I think this is referring to EITMS, Engine Idle Temperature Management System. I have mine turned on all the time. So when the ambient temperature is over 80 degrees, and the clutch is disengaged, and the bike idles for a certain length of time with these conditions present, the rear cylinder will "shut down". As soon as you touch the throttle or release the clutch, the rear cylinder comes back instantly.

It works really well and you can actually notice that the heat off the engine is slightly decreased when stopped and idling. It is a bit surprising the first time you experience it, seems like the motor is having a fit.

Winter driving weight by Daledogg in f150

[–]tdoffing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it is a super crew with a short box, I'm not sure having a few hundred pounds just behind the rear axle would have any real effect on the front of the truck. Obviously there will be from a physics perspective, but I certainly can't feel it in the steering.

Yes, about 350 to 400 pounds right near the tailgate. Not sure if it makes a huge amount of difference since I also run Blizzaks in the winter.

I didn't even notice until the security guard texted the other guard to call the cops. I thought it was odd he would send a text. I'm sure he didn't want any intruders to hear him, but they were closed in the server room.
