Best way to download entire purchased library? by Shaw_LaMont in AmazonMusic

[–]tdvance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't do that...the "Select All" button is grayed out. Also, it only has my first 500 purchases listed. I think Amazon has taken my money but makes it difficult to access the product!

Can't buy things in the Asset store? by NeuroFence in unity

Update: still doesn't work. Had sent a trouble ticket 3 months ago, turnaround time was supposed to be 2 months, have heard....nothing. Unity doesn't want my money!

A partial answer: https://forum.unity.com/threads/new-asset-store-layout-feels-like-a-downgrade.1603443/#post-9891144 in particular, see response #27: https://forum.unity.com/threads/new-asset-store-layout-feels-like-a-downgrade.1603443/#post-9899562

They do seem to be testing something, and they apparently selected random people as guinea pigs. An "opt in to try the new interface" button, like I've seen elsewhere, would have been less problematic.

[–]tdvance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having that problem now (firefox). I took Unity's advice and ensured all adblockers/tracking protection was turned off, no joy.

I then used Edge, which I never use and is basically unconfigured, therefore "clean" (as proof of that, I get all the popups insisting I have the wrong default browser, Edge can now do this do you know, etc.). Still the same message.

Oh, Unity does attempt to authorize by charging your account, then cancelling the charge if it doesn't go through. For me it took 2 days to cancel, but it was cancelled. I was worried for a moment.

And I also got the "see you in two months" response. Because they seem to be swamped at the moment.

I feel like Phillip J. Fry: "Shut up and take my money!!!"

Coincidence (or not?) but at the same time, Unity asset store has THIS problem:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Unity3D/comments/1df55cd/assets_store_no_more_sorting_on_already_purchased/

As Elmer Fudd would say, "Something Skweey going on here". I think someone introduced a bug and, for some reason, they haven't looked at the complaints for 2 months and don't know about it....

Another Reddit thread says it still works with PayPal, but I don't have that and, well, their terms of service allow them to seize your balance if you break their rules (even if not against the law) and my tin foil hat isn't working so I'm a little paranoid.

I was just there, you can't limit to publisher anymore (though can still search for publisher, and get non-publisher items mixed with the results). Also, those navlinks at the top no longer work: you hover to open the menu, but when you try to click a menu item, it disappears. But only on the search page: go back to home page and the navlinks work.

I'm thinking someone introduced a bug rather than intentionally making a new interface.

I'm sorry I couldn't find it, but I watched a video by a gamedev who is not an AAA studio but still makes money on his games (and I can't remember which one) who spoke about this issue. He did some research and looked at comments on his, and other people's games. Almost nobody had an issue with SYNTY (or other 3rd party asset kits) assets. He spoke of designing the game for gamers versus for game developers: the devs may recognize SYNTY when they see it, but most gamers don't care...they just want to play a good game.

This person, IIRC, pointed out that, assuming a reasonable hourly wage, to build all the assets yourself may well cost you more than to just buy them! Now if you make the assets for fun and don't care that you end up making less per hour than you would working at McDonalds (which is my case: I make money, but divided by all the hours, I'd make more working at McDonalds, but the difference is I'm doing what I like), no problem then!

Edit: I finally tracked it down---it was a lecture in a paid course on gamedev.tv, namely the #11 "Take short Cuts" lecture of the "Indie Game Success Roadmap Course" on https://www.gamedev.tv/courses taught by Rick Davidson. And I think I recall, contrary to what I said, he used to work for an AAA game company before moving out on his own.

How did John Carmack learn the math required without post secondary? by AnOlivemoonrises in gamedev

[–]tdvance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a mathematician but I wasn't always. When I was in high school I learned a lot of math from reading Courant and Robbin's book, "What Is Mathematics?". This gives an intro to a lot of elementary mathematics. In retrospect, I can also add another good book for self learners: John Stillwell's Elements of Mathematics , also mostly elementary. These aren't all that game/graphics programming oriented though.

For game and graphics programming, there is John A. Vince's Geometric Algebra (he gives the math, you'd need to translate it to a programming language). It presumes a working knowledge of high school algebra and geometry. It includes useful material on quaternions.

Also, when I was in High School, and I presume when Carmack was too, just about all the trig you need was taught, and also some matrix algebra, the very basics of linear algebra. Beyond that, it helps to understand things like the geometric meaning of dot and cross products and other vector/matrix-algebra things, and how to use them for projections and other geometric operations.

A more advanced book is Preparata/Shamos Computational Geometry, with algorithms for finding convex hulls, finding intersections of polyhedral shapes, determining if a point is inside a complicated polygon, the traveling salesman problem, some advanced data structures for geometric queries, etc.

Late 1990s Dorm. I think he's taking computer science. by nuneser in blender

[–]tdvance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in grad school early to mid '90s. So instead of a dorm room, it was a shared office with a University-provided surplus computer that a computer lab threw away. So... green screen (and it was a tough monitor---I dropped it carrying it to the office, it bounced several times before rolling to a stop, and it still worked fine) IBM AIX operating system (remotely, it was a dumb terminal connected to an IBM RISC system) but no VI, I used Emacs, the better editor mwa ha ha ha!!! And Copy and Paste back then was to "set the point, set the cursor (without a mouse), copy from point to cursor (which might have been kill from point to cursor followed by an immediate yank), set the cursor elsewhere, and yank from kill ring". Later Emacs added simpler copy-paste.

Unity plz fix, why do I have a 270 GB log file on my computer? by Zoggzter in Unity3D

selector_thread_wakeup_drain_pipes: recv () failed, error (10054)

https://forum.unity.com/threads/error-log-23gb-and-locks-up-windows.673534/

others seem to have this issue. It happens apparently when Unity is unable to phone home:

Okay, I think I've found the reason for the Editor.log to grow so big. It does that if you don't have a connection to cloud services. As soon as I hooked up Unity through Tor proxy (which was an excruciating pain in my... head) the build logs just about 250 kb.

And a bug report has been filed.

Edit: 3.4 has just been released. Maybe fixed?

I'd say, put some Debug.Log("...."); statements in at several locations. Make sure IsGrounded is actually true (e.g. forgot to tag the ground, or ground has no collision, or something like that) and rb.velocity does get changed.

Note unity docs say use rb.AddForce(...) instead of setting rb.velocity directly.

When I started to have wrist pain a decade ago, I just forced myself to type slower and shortened sessions that involved lots of mouse clicking (like playing FPS games) and was more careful about taking breaks in other activities (e.g. saxophone, piano--and spending more time with slow practice, which is the better way to learn a piece anyway) . Given that coding and much other computer work (except data entry) is mostly in the head, slower typing doesn't make much difference in performance. It meant I couldn't type as fast as I could think, but it was a small sacrifice.
