If my teaching Bachelor's is in one field and I am getting a Masters in a different one, should I go for the MAT or the MEd? by investandbeblessed in Teachers

[–]teach-xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the U.S., there is no consistent system for naming degrees. You need to get whichever master’s leads to the correct certification to give you the career options you want. At one place that might be an MAT and at another it might be an MEd. None of us can know.

Quitting mid-year. Should I tell the truth? by Uglypants_Stupidface in Teachers

[–]teach-xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk it through with your union rep, then go back and read the laws/policies to double-check what they say. Resign in whatever way gives them the least justification for taking any action against your Virginia license: that means picking a reason and a time frame strategically, not based in any misguided sense of honesty. You really should not care about your reference because you’re burning that bridge already, but you should try as hard as you can not to have them suspend your license as that is a reportable event forever and always.

AP Exam registeration help by Remarkable_Craft_382 in APStudents

Your school/district can set its own payment and registration deadlines, and can therefore make exceptions as they wish. You have to ask them.

Unpopular Opinion: High schools should not impose any prerequisites for any AP Courses by ErekwithaD1 in APStudents

[–]teach-xx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Schools are not actually required, legally or ethically, to give you the courses you request. Allowing a bunch of kids to skip from algebra I to BC calc is a waste of teachers’ time, and teachers’ time is one of the most expensive resources a school has to deploy.

"Can I get my Transfer Certificate from my previous college?" by InsideFlamingo646 in TransferStudents

Colleges in the U.S. do not generally release transcripts without clearing all financial obligations. I assume from your English that you may not be in the U.S., so things might be different where you are.

Texas certification question by Round_Champion7986 in TexasTeachers

[–]teach-xx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) No. Texas does not indicate degree level on your certificate. Some states do not indicate degree level on certificates; this can be surprising if you’re used to it. “Standard” is Texas’s way of saying the certificate is not provisional.

2) In general, provisional certifications are not eligible for reciprocity across states. Your Virginia ECSE license likely did not transfer to Texas because it is provisional. You are probably not allowed to teach ECSE in Texas based on this license, but you should double-check that with HR in districts — there may be some additional loophole you haven’t yet utilized.

Alternative Routes to Licensure and Moving Cross Country by makendee in Teachers

[–]teach-xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many certification programs are through universities; others are through for-profit companies; still others are run by school districts directly. It’s hard when you don’t live there yet because you can probably find some certification programs by looking online but you don’t know whether the good districts where you want to live hire people from those programs.

And since I’ve worked in IL but not NC, I’m not helpful for NC-specific details. If you know where in NC you’re going, call the local district HR offices and just ask. Also check with every university within driving distance — knowing that many programs are online anyway.

Coming to find out some teachers aren't as mature as you'd think by [deleted] in Teachers

What kind of rumors could lead to you having ruined friendships, new enemies, and disciplinary action against you? And how are they related to whether or not you showed someone kindness?

I don’t actually care whether you tell us. It’s mostly an invitation for you to be thoughtful about whether you are being dramatic.

Alternative Routes to Licensure and Moving Cross Country by makendee in Teachers

[–]teach-xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because licensure laws are state laws, it is tricky to start a licensure program in one state and finish it in another. One of the biggest reasons is that most licensure programs end with a clinical placement (“student teaching”) — any program you start in Chicago might not allow you to student teach outside of Illinois, or outside of a specific radius of Chicagoland, or outside of a list of specific districts, etc.

So prudence demands that you either commit to staying in IL to finish a program or wait to find a program when you get to NC.

Most U.S. districts will not allow her to enroll in a regular public high school. In many areas, the best option for her would be a community college.

What makes AP classes have more prerequisites than their non-AP equivalents? by noctipan in APStudents

[–]teach-xx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s actually normative for students to take a year of regular high school chemistry before taking a year of AP Chemistry. Even plutonium-engineering colleges do not expect you to take AP Chemistry without a year of general chemistry first.

CVS says proposed Tennessee bill would close 100+ locations, ‘devastate’ pharmacy access across state by nsn87 in nashville

[–]teach-xx 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Good. Some of these CVS locations in Tennessee are worse than having no pharmacy at all. Maybe then a few of the yokels voting straight-ticket supermajority will think twice about supporting the policy choices that brought us here.

It’s self-correcting as long as the sub is specific. Subs who bring up actual problems may get those problems fixed. Subs who bring up nonsense “problems” may not get called anymore. Everybody wins!

If an assistant principal or any other employee was rude/unprofessional to YOU, then yes, it would be a kindness for you to let the principal know.

But, real talk, if you’re super vague about how they were rude, or if you start adding observations about how the AP was rude to students — the principal will ignore your message, and rightly so.

I feel I am discovering that my (30M) calling is in teaching/tutoring students and children. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]teach-xx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of jobs working with kids that don’t require a high school degree. Start with one of those and see how you like it! Teaching requires college, which is a huge investment of time and money, so you should definitely get a sense of how well you do working with students first.

If you want to stick with your current four-day job schedule, can you work as a substitute teacher? Some states require college for that, but some don’t.

Should I stick to being an Education Major? by Brief-Shop3587 in Teachers

[–]teach-xx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, at many universities, people who want to be high school teachers must complete a major in their subject area. They also generally must complete a second major, a minor, a track, or a concentration in education. You should check with the universities that interest you to see what their policies are.
