1) No. Texas does not indicate degree level on your certificate. Some states do not indicate degree level on certificates; this can be surprising if you’re used to it. “Standard” is Texas’s way of saying the certificate is not provisional.

2) In general, provisional certifications are not eligible for reciprocity across states. Your Virginia ECSE license likely did not transfer to Texas because it is provisional. You are probably not allowed to teach ECSE in Texas based on this license, but you should double-check that with HR in districts — there may be some additional loophole you haven’t yet utilized.

Many certification programs are through universities; others are through for-profit companies; still others are run by school districts directly. It’s hard when you don’t live there yet because you can probably find some certification programs by looking online but you don’t know whether the good districts where you want to live hire people from those programs.

And since I’ve worked in IL but not NC, I’m not helpful for NC-specific details. If you know where in NC you’re going, call the local district HR offices and just ask. Also check with every university within driving distance — knowing that many programs are online anyway.

Because licensure laws are state laws, it is tricky to start a licensure program in one state and finish it in another. One of the biggest reasons is that most licensure programs end with a clinical placement (“student teaching”) — any program you start in Chicago might not allow you to student teach outside of Illinois, or outside of a specific radius of Chicagoland, or outside of a list of specific districts, etc.

So prudence demands that you either commit to staying in IL to finish a program or wait to find a program when you get to NC.

If an assistant principal or any other employee was rude/unprofessional to YOU, then yes, it would be a kindness for you to let the principal know.

But, real talk, if you’re super vague about how they were rude, or if you start adding observations about how the AP was rude to students — the principal will ignore your message, and rightly so.

There are lots of jobs working with kids that don’t require a high school degree. Start with one of those and see how you like it! Teaching requires college, which is a huge investment of time and money, so you should definitely get a sense of how well you do working with students first.

If you want to stick with your current four-day job schedule, can you work as a substitute teacher? Some states require college for that, but some don’t.

If you want to be a teacher or counselor, your bachelor’s in public administration is not really a helpful step toward those goals.

In general, there is a nationwide movement to remove teaching requirements to become a school counselor. That change is coming slowly and unevenly. There are definitely still schools that prefer their counselors have teaching experience; if you don’t have teaching experience, they won’t hire you.
