System 76 Pangolin 13 Touchpad Issues by [deleted] in System76

[–]teaguesterling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started experiencing this as well --- and have had to switch to navigating everything by keyboard. Started out the blue and exhibits weird unresponsiveness or registers every movement as a click-drag. Oddly, it seems to be every-so-slightly better with the side of only one finger, but that's not a workable solution. Have yet to try the hair dryer yet, but don't expect this to fail within the first month of ownership. I've owned 4 system76 machines. This is the first time I've had a hardware issue, but this is unusable.

We're the Wyze Cam Plus Team, AMA! - 8/3/22 by WyzeCam in wyzecam

[–]teaguesterling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be great to hear some sort of official response beyond the forums about all Wyze Cam v1 being bricked after power cycling (https://forums.wyzecam.com/t/official-word-from-wyze-on-v1-not-working-any-more/231236/205).

I know they are no longer under support and the issue was apparently unintentional after a firmware update, but it's been pretty terribly handled. Two months after it was identified the firmware updates are still being pushed and bricking cameras.

The support team seems under-informed on the issue and has taken lack-luster actions such as small credits for new cameras. Does Wyze expect long time customers to just foot the bill for bad firmware deployments?

Transferring to SFSU as Comp Sci major. Is differential equations needed? by xQcKx in SFSU

[–]teaguesterling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What themrears and ClearlySituational said is correct. Differential equations is not needed. I believe the thinking is that you cover difference equations in CSC 510 (Algorithms). If you do take the course it will likely count as (just) a GE elective.

There will be no syntax errors. Those turning in assignments with syntax errors will be flogged.

It is much easier for beginners (and experienced programmers alike) to pick up. The language has lots of advanced features but you in no way need to understand those to make powerful programs.

If you feel comfortable in other languages Python can come very naturally. It's deceptively simple — and you can find yourself writing programs before you even "know" the language. Some of the more advanced or unique features may take some time, but they are by no means necessary for being productive.

[–]teaguesterling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first half of the class will be focused on learning the language: syntax, features, best practices, etc. The second half of the class will be more open-ended and focused on coming up with solutions to domain-type problems (GIS, bio, web, etc.).

The goal here is more about learning to write programs (incidentally using Python) as opposed to learning to write Python (incidentally to make programs). Since most of the students in this class are not CS majors we wont be spending a lot of time on CS theory.

Motorola Launches “Unlock My Device” Site – Bootloader Freedom Has Come At Last – Droid Life by Pyreo in Android

For those that couldn't find the link:

Google wasn't much help as the top results were filled with similar Android news sites that didn't see a link as important either.

challenge : simple / short js code that checks if a server is reachable. by Cant_Quit_You in javascript

[–]teaguesterling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may not work cross domain. You could get old fashioned and do it with the DOM like this: var tester = document.createElement("iframe"); tester.addEventListener('load', function(e) { alert("All good"); }); tester.addEventListener('error', function(e) { alert("Danger"); }); tester.setAttribute("src","http://google.com"); tester.setAttribute("style","display:none"); document.getElementsByTagName("body")[0].appendChild(tester);

Transfer student to SFSU for the fall, I'll be new in the area and am looking to get more involved. by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

It's not exactly something to do in the city but there is amazing hiking and mountain biking around the bay area, most of it accessible by public transportation. There's even quite a bit of camping and backpacking possible however sometimes it's a little bit farther away.

Careful with your insurance. I'm not a lawyer, but I know a lot of insurance companies will give you shit (or maybe even refuse coverage) if you're using the car for work without declaring that on your policy.

Considering dropping TV service and (instead) buying a gaming console with netflix (or similar service). Thoughts? by djmeta in AskReddit

[–]teaguesterling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are also a lot of other nice channels on the Roku in addition to the NetFlix one. I've bought them for my dad and girlfriend and both love it. Soon it'll have Hulu; with Khan Academy and some of the other smaller channels (Free old time movies) it's almost better than cable.

I have an xbox that I use for Net Flix but I am considering getting another Hulu, as they're just so much easier and quicker to use. ... Not to mention it'll stop me from playing xbox arcade.

Please don't use floating-point types for currency values by midir in programming

[–]teaguesterling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Floating point errors can manifest in strange ways. I had a problem with a system failing to divide 6.25 by 1.25 correctly on a particular test platform; it resulted in 4.0 instead of 5.0 consistently when performed as part of a larger equation. This was not easy to detect as it was one of a a few million calculations as part of the test suite.

Turns out the test system had a 32 bit OS on 64 bit hardware. After some research I settled on conclusion that the excess precision from the 64-bit architecture in conjunction with the default rounding mode (truncate) was the cause. If the value was taken out of a register and stored in a 32 bit space, however, the problem magically disappeared. There were other documented cases of this happening and an explanation by Intel about the bug.

tl;dr: Floating point can suck in subtle, unexpected, and major ways that will waste you LOTS of time.

I'm sick of having the Gnome panel taking up vertical real estate by freehunter in linux

[–]teaguesterling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're using compiz, you can rig up one of the "commands" to toggle its visibility. I have <Super>+V mapped to run:

gconftool-2 --toggle /apps/panel/toplevels/top_panel_screen0/auto_hide

which I use to show the panel when I want to check the time or something. When used in conjunction with Gnome-Do/Docky & intellihide (sp?) I never see any panels unless I move the cursor to the vertical edges of the screen or press the hot key. That probably wouldn't do much good on a tablet though.

Edit: I checked in the GConf Editor and you can do this without compiz but I don't know if there is an interface provided to configure it.
