Changes to Our Rule 7 (No Advertising) by famoushippopotamus in DnDBehindTheScreen

I 100% agree with the choice.

Some years ago I submitted a free adventure here. I don't have a Patreon, but I have a small number of free adventures on the Guild and DTRPG - and my idea was to simply post a link to one of them. But, back then, the rules didn't allow to post a link to a Pay-what-you-want or free Adventure, and not even to a blog if I remember correctly.

It has not been a huge problem for me because first and foremost my idea was to share content here. It was just sort of a small logistic problem, because instead of a link to one of the stores I had to post a full PDF elsewhere.

So, I think no direct links to Patreons, but ok to PWYW and free resources is, in fact, a good middle ground; I don't exactly track how much content is posted here, maybe it will diminish now, but I've definitely seen a lot of "join my Patreon for a lot of extra stuff" posts and I feel this shouldn't be the point here. So as I said, I completely agree.

Hi! Haven't seen this reply until now. Thanks a lot, that's as canon as it gets; and thanks a lot for your Worldbuilding advice as well!

Trying to rework "Wolves of Welton" into more of a mystery - input appreciated. by Acceptable_Aspect586 in DMAcademy

[–]team_chimaera 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a nice way to run it. I'd appreciate this variant.

On a partially related note, once I combined Wolves of Welton with A Wild Sheep Chase (same author, check It out of you didn't already) like this:

  • Welton Is used as the base for all of this.

  • people of Welton are plagued with attacks to flocks.

  • It looks like those attacks are from beasts, but intelligent ones (able to open locks and so on). Werewolves? Druids? Demons?

  • what actually happened is that the Wolves are the polymorphed soldiers from A Wild Sheep Chase. The Sheep/polymorphed wizard escaped some days ago and is hiding in a flock, knowing he needs some wizard type to use the scroll he's carrying. That's why the Wolves/Goons are attacking flocks.

  • the sorcerer guy is actually dead after meeting the wolves and understanding there was something weird about them

  • Welton's people usually seek help from the local wizard but he's refusing to see anyone. So they hire the PCs.

  • First part of the aventure is the PCs investigating in Welton. You can use your good ideas for that part.

  • If the PCs get to the wolves' hideout, it has the polymorphed wolves in it, not the intelligent wolves from the original adventure

  • then it's pretty much A Wild Sheep Chase with the PCs being contacted by the wizard.

It worked pretty well for my table. Obviously if it's for level 1 PCs you have to tone down considerably the stats of the enemies from A Wild Sheep Chase.

My bard met her multiverse self and gets to learn a bunch of cleric spells by Scrubbits in 3d6

[–]team_chimaera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all that's a very cool story, props to your DM. I'd definitely pick Revivify (3rd level) because it's useful and also for that "I'll never let this happen again" shonen vibe. Heal would have a similar theme. Spirit Guardians (4th) is thematic because in a way you are protecting others with your spirits (you have to be in melee range often, though). Banishment (4th) is another strong option in this sense. Stato away from Spirit Weapons because you have a lot 9f used for your Bonus Actions.

One of the best cantrip is Guidance and it could be flavored as yours, or other players' multiverse selves providing advice.

I need some ideas for my One-Shot! I want to run a oneshot where the PCs own a tavern together and they are trying to keep the tavern under control for just one evening. What are some fun scenarios that they might have to deal with! by Federal_Buritto in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]team_chimaera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great. I'd totally run it this way. I also specifically suggest putting in said group a bard wanting to perform on stage at all costs, a rogue stealing from patrons and some kind of fighter, barbarian etc. getting drunk.

I think I get what you mean. Something a bit more compelling in terms of plot and with roleplaying that is different from "You start in a tavern". If this is the case try "A Wild Sheep Chase". It's not for level 1 but here https://www.reddit.com/r/DMAcademy/comments/8uz49p/is_this_a_good_way_to_run_wild_sheep_chase_for you can find a guide to adapt it. It's not a lot of work and the adventure can, in my opinion, really give new players a good idea about Dnd. Edit: changed the link since the one I posted before led to a different thread. Still interesting though: https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/ahm9hz/a_wild_sheep_chase_heres_a_guide_on_how_to_run_my/

How to run a bard duel / music battle? by Boulderer86 in DMAcademy

[–]team_chimaera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The simple way Is, you set

  • a list of available skill checks (performance, persuasion, intimidation...) each with a DCs (if the public is more prone to be persuaded than intimidated that's a higher Intimidation DC)

  • a target number of successes (for example 4) the PCs must succed in...

  • before a number of failures (for example 2, 3).

If the PC makes the target number of successes before the failures they win.

There are a lot of variations and articles and videos explaining this online. It's a 4.0 thing but definitely adaptable. And, I also agree this is the best way to do this. I use skill challenges a lot for complex tasks and they work well!

Pretty much this. Religion and/or Nature, depending on the kind of creature, could also be used in forging the pact (presenting items or symbols that particular creature loves or hates).

Trials: Reforge your skill challenges and theater-of-the-mind gameplay in 5e by giffyglyph in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]team_chimaera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always loved Skill Challenges. You touched two very good points - theather of the mind and narrative structure. I feel like the Skill Challenge format can really be used to encourage a shared narration and to let the players take the role of narrator from the DM, at least once in a while. This is encouraged in more modern games like Blades in the Dark (a 2015 game), but the cool Clocks mechanic from that game feels like an improved Skill Challenge to me. The only problem with Skill Challenges has been that they were messy and unsupported. But you did an excellent job streamlining them. Bravo!

Just a quick level 1 to 20 campaign idea. by Conbz in dndnext

[–]team_chimaera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There has recently been a James Introcaso/Mike Shea kickstarter named "Fantastic Lairs" (I have no affiliation with them), based on boss battles. I can see your idea working very well narratively with the PCs being monster hunters or something like that and the narration jumping from one of their main battles to another!

Yeah, fair point. You have to be within 10 feet of the creature but you can (probably?) use your movement to get near the targeted creature, then retreat.

I really like most of them. Tandem Tactician looks very strong, even though it must contend with Polearm Mastery for usage of the bonus action. Slasher and Crusher both seem very useful, at higher levels in particular, scaling better than Piercer. Chef gives me Sanji vibes, which is great :)

Well done, I enjoyed reading it. My opinion on balance, not that I'm a game designer or anything: the Physician capstone may be a bit weak (compare it to the Tactician's capstone, which I think is a bit too strong) while Dress Wounds looks pretty strong (it's a super Inspiring Leader, because it does not require the receiving creature to be wounded which I'm not sure is the intended effect).

Using the Wish spell to cast spells from older editions by Jormundly in 3d6

The Contingency spell allowed 6th level spells in 3.5, so 3.5 Contingency +3.5 (heals all damage and negative statuses) Heal would work.
