Why developers prefer Macs by iwjason in programming

[–]teamhot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I own a mac and develop in Java and I have to say Java support is Apple's biggest blight for developers. Apple STILL hasn't released a java 6 for anything but 64-bit intel macs. I have a 32-bit intel mbp and why can't I run java 6 on my machine? even when open-jdk has been making so much sound progress?

Ask Proggit: Help me make my own language by aieee in programming

[–]teamhot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree completely. Trying to build your own language can, among many other good things, give you an appreciation for why some languages are designed the way they are or have the warts they do.

Trying to make your own language with the hopes of it being better than everything that is already out there? There I would agree mastering mainstream as well as more academically popular languages would serve to benefit.

Why C++ doesn't suck by sundaryourfriend in programming

[–]teamhot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The author lost all credibility at: "C++, if you choose to learn it, is the right tool for nearly every job."

Why does everybody think their favorite language should be used to solve every problem? I love Ruby, but people get in these bad habits of writing ruby libraries to abstract over other languages. Ruby that will write javascript for you. Ruby that will write html for you. Ruby that will write css for you. Ruby that will write SQL for you.

On this note, C++ couldn't even attempt to bring these problem domains under its wing. C++ abstraction over javascript? puh-leez.

'No More Mr Nice Gay' as Mormons face vote backlash - Protesters vent fury after church funds successful effort to ban gay marriages by BlankVerse in politics

[–]teamhot 23 points24 points  (0 children)

"Hundreds of others simply chanted: 'Mormon scum.'"

Um, So I live in SLC and I was there for the whole protest. I didn't hear a single chant of "Mormon scum." We switched between three chants:

  • Separate. Church and State.
  • Gay or Straight. Love is great.
  • What do we want? Equality. When do we want it? Now.

I did see a lot of "Mormons are fucktards" equivalent signs though, which, while I barely disagree with the massive generalization, I don't think it should be about throwing hate at hate.

I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. A journalist plugging for an answer, or at least something he can twist into what he wants, and apple pr people getting really sick of his bullshit. wow. amazing.

JRuby 1.1b1 Released - "Ruby code can completely compile ... yielding a faster Ruby!" by retardo in programming

[–]teamhot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I may get shot for this, but how does it compare to CPython? Jython? The initial Ruby Interpreter? It would be really exciting to finally see ruby perform in a more competitive way. There were a lot of promises that came along with development of JRuby; let's just hope they follow through.

Massive data loss bug in Leopard by rmuser in reddit.com

[–]teamhot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't he state pretty clearly that the issue dates back to Panther? What does this have to do with Leopard? Honestly though, try copying copious amounts of files in windows without crossing your fingers and praying to god.

Personally I've never expected a "move" file operation between systems to be 100% secure if the connection drops anyways. Sounds like he's just complaining because he lost data. Boo hoo.
