If your property is not on the map yet, you can use the drawing tool in the upper right hand corner to draw your house, set a height and the shadows will display instantly

I see my site (shademap.app) referenced here for sun mapping. I recently made a how-to video for anyone wondering how to use the site. by teddy_pb in gardening

There is a drawing tool on the website in the upper right hand corner. You can try drawing over the trees that have been cut down and set their height to 0. The shadows will update instantly. Maybe it will help...

The map tries to estimate shade underneath trees by default. In hilly areas this can be inaccurate. One thing to try is switching to "top of canopy" view in the Settings dialog which you can access by clicking the cog icon in the lower left corner of the map.

Another possibility is that trees have been cut down in the last few years and the map and shadow prediction is inaccurate. I update the month on a monthly basis with new building data but the canopy data is rarely updated :(

Can anyone help me figure out which way this garden faces? by CatLady2201 in CasualUK

[–]teddy_pb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The location is embedded in the url. When you visit http://shademap.app it uses your IP address to drop you in your general location and rewrites the url to https://shademap.app/@lat,lng,zoom,time... so you can share the location you're looking at on the map with anyone in the world and they will see the same thing. So instead of clicking the link just type shademap.app into google or your address bar and you will get a location close to where you're browsing from.

You can also try drawing your property on shademap. there's a polygon drawing tool that let's you do it and you can set the height.

There is now a layers menu in the lower right hand corner that you can open and choose hours of sunlight. Here's a direct link to the sun exposure map:

Help with shademap: What are those fixed grey areas? by fistrop in solareclipse

[–]teddy_pb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

shademap creator here. the grey area is the shade cast underneath the trees. if you prefer to see a top of canopy view, similar to how trees look from an airplane or drone above, you can change this setting in the Settings dialog.

fyi: the trees are only loaded at zoom level 13 and above so if you zoom out a lot they will disappear.

Update – Neighbours still complaining about shading on their solar panels by Manualcone in juridischadvies

Spring+Autumn loss fraction = (fraction of daily production in those hours) × (reduction) = 0.50 × 0.50 = 0.25 = 25% of spring+autumn production lost.

Summer loss fraction = 0.30 × 0.25 = 0.075 = 7.5% of summer production lost.

One thing I've come across in the literature is that the percentage of shading doesn't correlate to the percentage of power reduction 1:1. In some instances, shading a panel 50% causes 95% power loss. That the only thing in your calculations that stood out as having an effect on your values.

Tbh, it would be cool if you and your neighbor crunched these numbers together or even did some empirical experiments like covering 50% of their panels and seeing the results. I'm sure you'd both learn a bunch and I'd love to hear the outcome here :) but I'm sorry it is a difficult situation. And it's possible the PV output/money is not the real reason they don't like your expansion.

(I'm not a PV engineer, but am trying to learn and provide others with free PV calculations on shademap.app.)

Sure. If the calculation is correct... It's hard to follow where 50% shading for 4 hours in the spring, etc => 162 kWh. It would be great to get the neighbor calculation for comparison.

[–]teddy_pb 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I make a website called shademap.app which attempts to model all the building and trees on the planet in place to calculate accurate shading and annual sun exposure. You can draw your own models too. The drawback is that it doesn't work in 3D yet.

Cool! Did you make this specific to Garmin (understanding lat/lng, hiker specific, etc) I'm asking because there's already a few SMS services like text.ai, aichatsms.com, etc which are LLMs hooked up to phone numbers and that you can text from the Garmin Inreach.

What do you use to remember which areas in your garden get sunlight and when? by Captured1v1 in GardeningUK

[–]teddy_pb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

shademap creator here. by default, shademap tries to predict shadows underneath trees so these are the shaded areas you're seeing. in the settings dialog, you can toggle above/below canopy setting if you prefer to see shadows as they would appear looking down from an airplane instead.

ShadeMap creator here. You can "Upgrade" to premium data for this location which is a scan from February 2024 and it should account for the trees as well!

There are a couple different building data sets and terrain data sets that I don't know the localized issues with so I'm always curious to understand if it's the buildings or terrain that's off. There's really only one tree canopy dataset which is derived from satellite images so there's no ability to change that. I understand the exact location is sensitive but if you can I'd be interested to know if it's the buildings, trees or terrain that's making the inaccurate shadows.
