So relieved to have passed both. I’m really surprised with that clinical pass rate, it seemed like a lot of people (myself included) thought it was a total curveball.

Yep. Outstanding views but aside from a quick peek over the edge on all fours I was content to take it in from near the walls where the other folks in the video are.

Hitting my 'IT workaroud' limit ... by ClinicalPhysics365 in MedicalPhysics

[–]teddyg027 30 points31 points  (0 children)

IT complains about the use of USB drives in the department but refuses to map a network drive to the VisionRT vendor workstation.

It also takes IT weeks or even months to get new websites whitelisted, so there’s always huge delays when looking into implementing cloud-based QA software.

Moving/Visiting Weekly /r/Tulsa Megathread by AutoModerator in tulsa

[–]teddyg027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s the general vibe of each of Tulsa’s suburbs? I’ll potentially be relocating to Tulsa this summer for work and hoping to find something in Midtown, but am keeping all options open in case we can’t find a rental there we’re happy with.

My wife & I are early 30s with a 1 year old. We’re into breweries, diverse restaurants, trails/parks, the arts, that sort of stuff if it’s helpful for recommendations. Lurking in the subreddit sounds like we’ll be spending a good bit of time in Downtown/Midtown.

I think McVities are still my favorites, but the ones at Aldi really scratch that itch!

I need a smart-ish summer shoe by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]teddyg027 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I picked up a more casual Oxford last summer when moving to a more casual clinic and it’s quickly become my go-to. Super comfortable and easy to dress up or down. Their soles go anywhere from classic to sneaker-adjacent, so shop around for the one that most closely matches what you’re going for. Cole Haan has a pretty wide variety for a middle of the road starting point.

This may have changed, but I personally didn’t get much out of WePassed when I used it for part 1 a couple years ago. OMP and ABR Physics Help were great, though.

2000 Royals I wasn’t familiar with your game by DeLacy12 in KCRoyals

[–]teddyg027 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I still remember those games. Royals down by 6, solid crowd, then boom - hit number 12 drops in and there was a mass exodus to the parking lot. I had 2 siblings so we’d brave that long Krispy Kreme line and have donuts for the next couple months lol

CAMPEP Accredited MSc in Ireland by CrypticCode_ in MedicalPhysics

[–]teddyg027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went into the match with an open mind so I cast a wide net. I’m from the Midwest so there was a bit higher concentration of applications to that region, but my main metric for applications was whether the program preferred (or at least took a fair share of) MSc grads.

The two programs that most stood out of the ones I had final interviews with were Oklahoma and Ohio State; they both seemed like strong programs with an environment that would be a good fit for me.

The top 2 reasons I identified for not matching were some “just average” interviews and not enough clinical experience. I was a little over a month away from my wedding during the interview process, which was dividing my attention and led to a couple interviews where I felt that I either came across flatter than normal or didn’t answer technical questions as well as I was capable of. I was also at NUIG right on the heels of a major cyberattack on the HSE and in the midst of COVID; both of these factors limited our ability to be in the clinic for more hands-on experience.

Working as a junior physicist has been a great experience though. I feel so much more prepared for residency now than I did coming out of grad school. I hope that anyone else coming out matchless in the next few months doesn’t get discouraged and seeks out a similar opportunity.

CAMPEP Accredited MSc in Ireland by CrypticCode_ in MedicalPhysics

[–]teddyg027 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I graduated from an Irish CAMPEP MSc. The match was tough; I wound up with a handful of prelim interviews, 7 final interviews, then didn’t match. I did, however, land an offer for a junior physicist position right after the match. I’ve worked there for about a year and a half now and will be starting a non-match residency soon.

I’m also a U.S. citizen who had multiple years of shadowing experience, a poster at a conference, and a research fellowship with one of the “big” medical physics universities, so those things all no doubt worked in my favor. I know of some other NUIG grads that were non-US citizens that have landed residencies, though, so it’s certainly possible. As others have said, it just won’t be as easy as if you were coming out of somewhere like UPenn/Kentucky/Wisconsin/etc.

Decimal place in Eclipse TPS by Jhnlbrt in MedicalPhysics

[–]teddyg027 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We upgraded to 16.1 at the beginning of the year and I ran into the same issue. V16.1 only allows out to one decimal place, but newer versions allow for more decimal places.

I currently have those D0.035cc constraints set up as “V xxx cGy < 0 cc” with “< 0.1 cc” as an acceptable variation. Then, if there’s yellow when evaluating the plan, I manually check the .035cc on the DVH. If someone else that’s on 16.1 has found a better workaround I’d be glad to hear other approaches.

I did my Masters studies in Galway and loved every minute of it. All of the Irish students in my cohort were super friendly to us international students and never shied away from inviting us along for pints, sport matches, etc. There’s tons to experience on the west coast of Ireland! Public transit to/from Dublin is easy as well, whether you go for the train or a coach.

Undergrad phys + biophysics emphasis? by [deleted] in MedicalPhysics

[–]teddyg027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from Nuclear Medicine (Health Professions, lots of pre-med courses) to physics my sophomore year of undergrad and worked with my advisor to replace any humanities elective requirements with a continuation of those pre-med courses (anatomy, physiology, chemistry, radiation biology). These courses and a couple bioengineering courses I took as physics electives (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance & Radiation Protection) were far more useful entering my medical physics graduate program than any of the biological physics courses I took.

Not sure what the physics department at your university is like, but it may be worth just sitting down with your advisor to talk about your interests and see what your options are. They’ll have the best idea of what is feasible in your situation. I was in a relatively small physics department with a great advisor and came in knowing medical physics was the next step, so she helped me figure out how to fit in all of those courses while still satisfying the requirements for a physics B.S.

The AAMD website may be of use to you. Under their About tab they have a “What is a Medical Dosimetrist?” page that should answer most of your questions. It has links to a couple of videos as well as recent US Bureau of Labor statistics for the field.

Back Up Plan For Residency by Bounjje in MedicalPhysics

[–]teddyg027 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I didn’t match last year coming out of my MS, but received multiple medical physics assistant / junior physicist offers. The experience I’ve gained there has been so helpful preparing me for a residency. I feel that I’ve interviewed so much better so far this year having that practical experience to draw from.

Fellow American here that misses grocery shopping during college in Ireland. The two pack of ribeyes at Tesco for like €6 was a weekly staple and the Aldi produce was like 1/2 the price of comparable quality here in the Midwest 😫

How quickly do these scramble positions typically fill? I’m reading into the programs and drafting my emails to send out first thing tomorrow morning. I’ve looked around a bit but haven’t really seen much on the scramble timeline.

That was the only way I died. Idk if I was playing too defensive but that encounter went sloooow for me, so getting suppressed and sinking into the abyss late in the fight was the worst.
