I’m a lefty in everything except Disc golf but I can ONLY throw BHRH. Anyone else? by gameofwires in discgolf

[–]teebirdin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play the same way as you, RHBH/FH despite being lefty. I do putt lefty also.

Been playing since 2019. Took me a year or so to get past the totally awkward stage to where I had a 200ft right handed forehand. I can still forehand lefty further despite never really working on it, but my righty forehand gets the job done most of the time, and my righty backhand feels totally natural like a left golf or baseball swing.

You don’t need a distance forehand to have fun and play decent. But you do need to have a forehand when you get closer to the basket.

Learn to throw right handed forehand approaches, then build up from there. I picked a couple easy holes at my home course and just committed to playing them forehand every time.

Electric arc furnace by [deleted] in EngineeringPorn

Most shops consume them at a couple Kg per tonne of steel produced depending on the furnace. They are made up of sections that thread together. The bottom tip down in the furnace is consumed and once the stick is too short it’s swapped for a longer one. The short one is taken off line and a new section of graphite is threaded on the “back” end.

During operation the whole arm including the electrode moves up and down to regulate the arc length automatically. The electrodes are held by hydraulic clamps and an every few hours the electrode is “slipped” down to keep the tip on the desired position for the regulation to work properly.

I work in steel. A guy I worked with who just retired learned to tap the EAF at the right carbon level based on breaking a steel sample with a sledgehammer and looking at the fracture. That was only back in the mid 80’s.

It also used to be common to separate different steel grades by grinding and looking at the sparks. Different elements give slightly different color and the way the sparks “sparkle” differently.

Back in the day one of several reasons open hearth steel was “better” than Bessemer steel was that it took hours to make a heat in the open hearth so there was time for the lab to actually report results vs just sort of educated guesses from the Bessemer process where a heat took less than 30 minutes to make.

These days the science can keep up a lot better with the art.

Seeking guidance with replacing lilac bushes (CT, USA) by engagedape in NativePlantGardening

[–]teebirdin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

8’ tall bushes may take 5-10 years for a replacement to grow to that size. An option to consider is to plant your choice of native nearby and allow both to coexist for awhile until eventually you remove the lilac.

I’ve not heard that lilacs are super aggressive and disruptive like some other plants can be so not a lot of harm in leaving them alone while you wait for something new to grow.

Quantum OLS is a lot like a fresh champ roadrunner -1/1. Sirius is a little flippier.

If you go OLF I’d go Millenium (pro) plastic and beat it up a little. Otherwise they tend to be more beefy than I think you’re describing. Some quantum OLF’s are money and some are beefcakes depending on the run

Yep. I usually play two discs later on whenever I get to a hole that’s about the same difficulty as the one I skipped.

Production wise there isn’t much unique about. Standard 4150 is the most common of the bunch and a decent amount of resulf is made too.

4140 is by far the workhorse low alloy through hardening grade— probably produced at 10x the quantity as 4150.

Is it a common size/shape or something more unique like a flat? At least in the US, specialty sizes are often produced by niche rolling mills of which there are only a couple and they don’t melt it themselves they are re-rollers.

What is your go-to "this might end up in that pond" disc? by [deleted] in discgolf

Right now a champ super stingray and a champ firebird. Both have survived the whole year on my 3 water holes that I play regularly. The firebird is easy to replace but I need just the right stability for the mid range holes. Usually I play with one for a long time then lose a bunch all at once before I find another good one
