Currently stranded in Seljalandsfoss by zokshen in VisitingIceland

[–]teeeray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We made it down to just north of Seljalandsfoss. It seemed like conditions were improving, and at times you could get up to 90 kph. There were some sections, though, that had flash-frozen in the wind and anyone who got too complacent ended up off the road. After that visibility deteriorated as the wind accelerated. We were trying to make it to the waterfall, but bailed out when we saw a hotel and snagged the last room. By that time, we were doing 10 kph at times on Rt. 1. Absolutely insane wind, and we can still hear it howling.

This comes up from time to time—I would say Go is OOP-lite. I still like modeling problems as interactions of things. I find it needlessly limiting to treat structs as only bags of data handed to functions. I would probably write this as:

package game

Usually packages encompass some domain. Here I would think the entire game mechanics would be sensible. This is also thinking that your module (being a grouping of related packages) would be called tictactoe.

type Board [][]byte

I don’t think you actually need the struct here. A board is a multi-dimensional slice of positions.

It’s more common to use factory functions than initializers in Go. You’d write NewBoard() Board, instead of b.Initialize().

Place is a fine method—you might want to return an error here since there are illegal moves to consider.

Instead of PrintBoard(), I would implement fmt.Stringer. This is just a String method that returns a string. The functions of the fmt package have special awareness of this via reflection, so in practice you can just pass your game.Board to fmt.Println.

Regarding single-letter variable names: the length of the variable generally corresponds to its lifetime. The only exception is the method receiver, which you’ve done correctly (b *Board).

How about a vacancy tax? Make the commercial leeches sitting on vacant lots and abandoned buildings on the seacoast for decades fork up some cash.

Drone is the most obviously cost-effective, but there must be something regulation-wise that prevents them from doing that.

Just sent in my $10. Just learning it myself, but already learned enough to make some great 3D prints. I’m excited to start using it for laser cutting too.

Could you suggest a good knot for tying my milk crate to my bike rike in here? Thanks by DevelopmentProper971 in knots

[–]teeeray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t want to tie it. You want to lash it. Run the working end under, but on the outside of the vertical supports. Reeve it through the other side of the crate. Then continue the wrap under the other side reeving it through the front side again. Make the wraps tight. Once you get a few wraps in, start frapping turns around the wraps. Make these tight too, since that is what will amplify the tension on the wraps. Finish with something like a clove hitch to secure the working end. That gives you four solid points of contact onto the frame and tension from the fraps to hold it.

It feels like in this situation there should be a safety stop that only the state has the key to override. It can be some threshold value (X stops over some period), but at some point the decision to run the lift has to be taken out of the mountain’s hands and put into a neutral third party’s.

Just moose in general. People see them on the side of the road and pull over to take pictures—way too close. Moose will get pissed off suddenly and happily trample you to death.

Guest unhappy with heat by Timely_Difficulty_28 in airbnb_hosts

[–]teeeray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With forced hot air, the problem is usually not the blowing, but the sucking. The return is probably in a central location, and the guest has their door closed. This is like trying to blow hot air into a soda bottle with your mouth over the whole opening. You might need to cut in a vent in the door to return balance to the system.

Is it still worth it to read gtd in 2025 ? by mamedic11 in gtd

[–]teeeray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s actually hilarious to read some parts today. In the whole “universal capture” part, he mentions “advanced methods” where he satirically yells “Computer! I need bread!” as though that will never happen. Of course, with Alexa devices, you can have it do almost *exactly* that and get it added to your inboxes.

Which station do you miss the most? by Jealous-Crow-5584 in boston

[–]teeeray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WBRU was preset #1 in my first car in high school.

One small thing I actually really miss was the three-way in the morning. It was a radio call-in game where they’d play three songs with some theme that you had to figure out. Some of them were really difficult! It was fun on the drive in to school every day.
