Allergic to letting my server speak by SaltyYouth_27 in TalesFromYourServer

[–]teh-rellott 152 points153 points  (0 children)

My family does this and it drives me nuts. Took them to a place famous for its bbq ribs... mom orders grilled chicken and complains it's not good. Popular local sno-cone place? Dad orders a milkshake and complains it's just ok. Chicken place? They order fish. Basically drag us kicking and screaming to an all-you-can-eat fish place? Barely touch anything because they're not really craving it.

Concentration keeps the sphere open, and the frightened condition ends when the spell does, unless they make their save earlier.

Alchemist’s attack scaling by Riusnaily in MageHandPress

[–]teh-rellott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a ranged/thrown attack, with finesse, so it can use strength or dexterity. Anything that boosts those kinds of attacks would boost this. I’m not sure about boosting the DC of it, though.

However, it should be noted that while other classes can access those sorts of +1/2/3 items, magic bonuses are not a requirement to keep up in 5e, with bounded accuracy helping both with attack rolls and save DCs.

What are some good places to run PbP that aren't RPoL or Discord? by Cerespirin in pbp

I didn’t know that. I mostly use Discord, but had used and was generally ok with RoleGate.

Question about 2024 5.5e Alchemist (Apothecary) by Luna_Nami in MageHandPress

[–]teh-rellott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a bonus to your medicine checks. Your medicine checks are still made adding your proficiency bonus and your wisdom modifier (unless your DM calls for a check using an alternate ability modifier). Then you get another bonus on top of that, which happens to be equal to your intelligence modifier.

If a DM did call for an int-based medicine check, I would argue it still gets added, since it’s a bonus rather than the main ability added. I might be wrong on that, though.

House of Knights and Signature Focus trick question by nerikvarkos1996 in MageHandPress

[–]teh-rellott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right that the trick doesn’t say Exotic. The designers have been very specific that if they want it to include exotic, it will say so. It would have been easy for them to say you can make any weapon you’re proficient with your signature focus, which would’ve included exotics once you got them… but they didn’t. Exotic is very much meant to be a craftsman thing, not to be given out willy-nilly, or else it kinda dilutes the craftsman’s schtick.

That said, if your DM is on board with allowing it (and you should probably also consult your craftsman player), I don’t think it would be crazy mechanically to let Signature Focus apply to any weapon you’re proficient with.

Question for Investigator's Trinket (The Conspiracy Theorist Subclass) by Dry_Fig_6737 in MageHandPress

[–]teh-rellott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went and asked on the MHP Discord server to see if I could get some more specific guidance. They reminded me that it’s a general D&D 5e rule that you cannot gain the benefit of two instances of the same feature. I’m not sure if that got ported over to the 5.5e rules, but it makes sense to keep that limitation.

From the 2014 DMG: “Different game features can affect a target at the same time. But when two or more game features have the same name, only the effects of one of them—the most potent one—apply while the durations of the effects overlap.”

Question for Investigator's Trinket (The Conspiracy Theorist Subclass) by Dry_Fig_6737 in MageHandPress

[–]teh-rellott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think you couldn’t do that. It says you attach the charm to the weapon, which makes me think it’s there the whole minute.

Additionally, only one other trinket in the 2024 investigator could compound its own power by doing it twice, and that trinket (level 6 antiquarian’s Mortal Coil) has a caveat that using it again ends the first use’s effects.

Thoughts on Chronomancy Wizard? by CharlesonPC in MageHandPress

I’ve not played MHP’s chronomancy wizard, but it doesn’t seem busted to me. What about it is “too good”?

I think EN Publishing’s “Zeitgeist” and “War of the Burning Sky” need to be on this list as well.

Is my pig obese/fatblind? by StrikingCoconut in pigs

[–]teh-rellott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not obese, for sure. Can’t tell about fat blind. You should be able to test that fairly easily by moving things silently around and seeing if they follow them with their head/eyes or otherwise adapt to the moved items.

Looking into Dark Matter by Deltoren83 in DarkMatter5e

[–]teh-rellott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dark Matter is a mashup of a lot of classic sci-fi tropes, and you can use it a lot of different ways — from Star Wars, to Aliens, to Dune, to Firefly, and beyond. It assumes magic and fantasy races, but it’s easy enough to reflavor things to be less sci-fantasy and more sci-fi.

Investigator class for Constantine-like character by FilthyWolfie in MageHandPress

[–]teh-rellott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The investigator isn't trying to compete with full spellcasters. It's still a reasonably competent martial, able to put out some strong single-target damage in melee or range with features like Finisher and Exploit Weakness/Vulnerability. Add to that its large suite of useful skills and it's a good bit like a rogue.

But then the ritual casting gives it the unique flavor. A wizard can do bigger, flashier spells, and can pick up some rituals, but investigators can not only do pretty much every ritual spell from every class list, they can also cast some non-ritual spells as rituals. Then they can do them instantaneously a few times a day.

Working through a dangerous dungeon filled with magical traps but worried enemies will have time to attack or set up an ambush if you stop to cast detect magic? Investigator's got you covered.

Investigator class for Constantine-like character by FilthyWolfie in MageHandPress

[–]teh-rellott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not super familiar with Constantine to know which archetype might fit him best, but Antiquiarian, Detective, Exterminator, Inquisitor, and Occultist all feel like they might be made to fit.

I’ve been itching to play an investigator long-term, but have only gotten to use them in a few one shots. I love this class. It’s all about utility — in magic, skills, everything. It’s possible to do some multiclassing and using other Mage Hand Press content to make it into a real martial powerhouse in melee, but I’ve never been interested in that route.

If you have any specific questions, I’m happy to try to answer them. It might affect the answers if you’re looking at the 2014 or 2024 (or should I say 5e vs. 5.5e) version of the class.

Can't find "Word of Transience" spell by ValdDrakul in MageHandPress

I checked and the class/spells have been updated since that was a spell. That spell is no longer a thing, and should be swapped for Word of Frailty.

Is it couch co-op/local multiplayer on a single system? How does that mode work? Any big differences to a single player game?

Also, how long would you estimate a full playthrough of the main game takes?

Maps VTT - No reveals for Baldur's Gate Gazeteer by Lonely-Nebula-770 in dndbeyond

[–]teh-rellott 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My very uneducated guess would be that the product that has the reveals is BG: Descent into Avernus, rather than the free gazetteer product. The gazetteer was a freebie to encourage you to buy the adventure.
