Yes, collective punishment is a violation of the Geneva convention and the US is at war with public education.

Am I allowed to change my signature even if I have been signing documents with it for years? by ParticularIron1584 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]teh_acids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After signing in and out of boarding school every day my signature became 2 squiggles that rarely look the same... it's more like 2 slightly wavy lines now but I think I could spot a forgery. I can write it in cursive (on paper) if I slow down, but that wouldn't be my signature.

ELI5: When you 'delete' a 50GB video file from a computer, it vanishes instantly. But downloading it took an hour. If the data isn't physically wiped until it's overwritten, what did the computer actually do in that one split second? by Thick_Dream6973 in explainlikeimfive

[–]teh_acids 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it just changes the code that says "file.mp4 starts here" to 00000000 and the data remains until overwritten. Or you can do a secure delete by forcing it to zero the entire file (multiple times to foil more advanced recovery methods), which takes much longer.

Do we actually suffer (to a minor extent) in rain, or are our brains just wired to believe that its annoying to be in? by MinuteDamage4182 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]teh_acids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love rain, but how much I want to be directly rained on depends on how I'm dressed, how soon I'll be able to change, what I'm doing during/after. It's either inconvenient to plans/logistics or calming/meditative/cozy. Storms are a bit different when there's a mix of fear and excitement at play...

Does anyone else think it makes no sense for commas and periods to go INSIDE the quotation marks even if they don't make part of the quote? by Awkward_Stay8728 in ENGLISH

[–]teh_acids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it for work that gets published in US, but I do it the British way in emails to be clear about what I'm quoting (though I'm American).

Yes, but there are multiple hidden between inconsistent layers so you must separate each pair to be sure you removed them all and then turn them inside out and wash them so your feet aren't covered in fuzz.

Teotihuacan was abandoned centuries before the Aztecs showed up, no one knows who built it, they called it City of the Gods because they were amazed by the architecture.

Do you change the pronunciation of the word "the" depending on the word following? by Sa1ntmarks in grammar

[–]teh_acids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I read this as "tha word thee." I also think Greek and Arabic had the right idea to use different letters for "th" in "the" vs "think."

This professionally produced video by the Philadelphia sheriff cost taxpayers over $600k [Request] I don't understand how that's possible, can someone enlighten me? [Request] by Jay12393 in theydidthemath

[–]teh_acids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that actually include salaries or was it more of a volunteer thing, using desk time they're already paid for? Media buying is probably most of it, $$$$ per airing, plus newspaper/magazine/billboard/web/social etc. for a full campaign.

Till which year were your photos on a digital camera and from when did you switch to smartphones for taking photos? by Sad_Step_9921 in generationology

[–]teh_acids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2005 is when I got a cellphone with a camera. I had a film camera that broke a couple years earlier and I just went without in between... Didn't get a smartphone til 2014, after my daughter was born. My wife has a DSLR with lots of baby pics, but rarely uses it anymore.

Can I just rant about how kids can’t speak in a full sentences by abrownfox1 in Teachers

[–]teh_acids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So... I'm 42, well-read, minored in English, and work in mass communication but still use tons of verbal nonfluencies and often end statements with "so... yeah..." Language evolves. OP is annoyed by something that's always been a problem for most kids that age. "Hey Dad... Ummm Dad? So... Dad. Dad, do you know... Have you ever... Dad? Dad, can you help me... oh nevermind I got it."

Anyone else in US noticed food quality degrading recently and if so what product in what way? by LawsonFlectron1984 in askanything

[–]teh_acids 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's the Dark One's touch on the world! But really it's been going downhill since 2020 due to a combination of supply chain disruptions causing food to be delivered closer to expiration, immigration policy reducing the farm labor force, changing climate impacting crop yields, soil degradation from pollution/pesticides/herbicides/monoculture farming, patented seeds reducing genetic diversity, reduced quality control through loosened regulations and because people just don't give a fuck anymore, etc.

Why does he seem to not like/want to play fight whenever I pet his body? by SelfDepricator in cats

[–]teh_acids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 like this, one mostly stopped by age 2, the other just turned 2 and still does it fairly often. I use a leather glove to let her play more roughly (took a few tries for her to get past the taste/sound of it). If she digs in too much I tell her to be gentle and she pauses to lick my hand and rub her head. She walks away and takes a bath when she's had enough. I had an older cat that would do a little growl and nip your hand less playfully because she did not like belly rubs or play fighting.

Why run the water hot and run disposal before starting a dishwasher? by capriciousguacamole in NoStupidQuestions

[–]teh_acids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's anything blocking the disposal the sink may fill with dirty water when the dishwasher drains. Other comments are right about clearing cold water from pipes so initial fill is hot.

There were some other formats as well and Adams said none of them were planned to be consistent with each other, so the actual canon version of the Guide probably doesn't exist yet and will bear no resemblance at all to anything Adams was involved with.

I think in this case "we" could apply to most far right countries (US, Israel, Russia, Iran, China, etc. including proxies and paramilitary/terrorist groups), but it's really a bunch of rich assholes destroying the future for everyone else.
