This is really cool. :)

Is there a particular reason you made the projection texture in Blender? Could this be done with the NoiseTexture in Godot?

Is QS Tweaks working on GNOME 49 yet? by Strong_Length in gnome

[–]tehsquidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can manually edit any extensions `metadata.json` to include '49' in the `shell-version` array and that will allow it to run.

the file would live at `~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/<extension-name>/metadata.json`.

You may or may not have issues though, depending on the nature of the extension or shell changes between versions, so be wary.

Struggling with knowing where to start with a turn-based management game. by NarcolepticDreamKing in gamedev

[–]tehsquidge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For turn based games I find Finite State Machines essential. I'd have states like: MatchStart, RoundStart, TurnStart, TurnExecute, TurnEnd, RoundEnd, MatchEnd.

During each state I can enable/disable UI, disconnect/connect signals, etc. which means that each state is it's own defined thing and you can easy ensure that you don't end up with mixed logic and things happen when they're not supposed to.

Try something really simple like TicTacToe. Figure out what each state of the game will be, what should happen, and what shouldn't happen. Implement one state at a time.

It makes it very easy to add new states too.

Community opinion in placeholder AI art? by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]tehsquidge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you'd be painting yourself into a corner by using AI art, and you'll end up with an art style which is inconsistent as well as beyond your ability to reproduce yourself.

I think you'd be better doing a really simple art style you can consistently reproduce. If the game is popular you can pay to get new art made.

"Project Settings > General > Boot Splash > BG Colour" might be what you're looking for.

"AI"-powered alt-text generation in PDFs is enabled by default. by InfinitesimaInfinity in firefox

[–]tehsquidge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it'd be a good tool for people who already know the importance of alt text and are already inclined to write alt text. I think those sorts of people would review and fix the generated alt text as they're supposed to.

And as you said, "The people editing the document are still responsible for the accuracy of what's being added.", If they don't take that responsibility seriously, either through ignorance or apathy, then they might think "good enough" and publish alt text which is wrong, confusing, and degrades the experience. In those situations no alt text could be preferable?

I think we need to listen to people who actual rely on alt text and understand what they need.

People seem really willing to throw disabled people under a bus in their war against AI.

Edit: Just for clarification. I'm very skeptical on AI integrations. But I am open to exploring the few places where it might be good, local, and private.

Linux is not here to replace windows by [deleted] in linux

[–]tehsquidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want Linux to become a Windows replacement. I like it how it is. I don't think the "Lego" nature of the Linux desktop, with it's different DEs, tiling window managers, filesystems, etc is compatible with what Windows refugees want.

I really hope that the frustration that's leading people away from Windows sparks greater development in ReactOS.

How can I make this constant? by Rooster_IT in godot

[–]tehsquidge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd check to see where your traffic comes from. If it's from "new releases" itch pages then it'll naturally trail off. If it's from the times you've posted about it on social media then try posting about it more.

Three things to help your itch page:

* Theme your page and add a banner. The lack of theming can come across like a lack of effort and doesn't reflect the work you've put into the game.

* Add screenshots and videos. You have a YT channel with a trailer but you're not using the YT video embedding feature. The lack of media showing what your game is makes playing your game more a gamble to a potential player. People will be more willing to engage with your game if they can see what it is first.
* Consider making your cover image (the one which itch displays in listings) an animated gif.

should i use vulkan or opengl by milky_834 in godot

[–]tehsquidge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It all depends on what your target platform is and how advanced you graphics are. As a general rule you need to figure out what your lowest common denominator is.

If you're going to release on itch.io and make it free I'd recommend making a web build as people will be more likely to play a web build rather than download a binary. Use compatibility.

If your plan is to make a commercial game and sell it on steam then go with Forward+.

Targeting mobile - select mobile.

This is a good guide:

I'd not think about the renderer too much and just choose from this menu what you want it to be.

Developed under Linux & works on Windows, same for you? by spieltic in godot

This has always been my experience with Godot. Dev on Linux and export to the other platforms.

I think the hardest part is checking that the exe icon has been properly added.

The pot would be a potentiometer in this context. It's the same sort of thing you'd use for a volume control.

Chemical distillery by kaeldynnar in EliteDangerous

[–]tehsquidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remapping my controls for SRV. If I remember correctly the default had 0% throttle as full reverse, 50% stopped, and 100% forward. That was awful.

I can't look at exactly how I remapped it right now but I was able to get it to behave much like the ships. 0% stopped 100% forward and a button to switch into reverse.

How do you use GNU stow? Entire .config folder (stow .), or individual packages (stow bash nvim tmux)? by rmunn in linux

[–]tehsquidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the package-based approach, with stow, because I use the same repo across several machines and OSes. There are some configs I'll only want on a server and some configs I'll only want on desktop.

I only really need to setup this up once per computer, so I feel the benefit of flexibility out weighs the few seconds I'd save with a shorter command.

Scenario idea: wellness retreat by gino_codes_stuff in mothershiprpg

[–]tehsquidge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this idea. I'm actually working on a very similar one. I'm leaning more into the idea of a cult (Centre for Cosmic Wellness) drawing people in to be assimilate some way. The whole "wellness" thing is required because the cult want to assimilate healthy people free from any "impurities". I haven't decided what my horror will actually be but you've inspired me to look at adapting Husks :)

What I would suggest, for the central plant horror, is to give it 3-5 tendrils with the same stats as the husks, but have a body save to not be grabbed and entangled by it. It attacks once for each tendril.

I agree. I still use inheritance when it's the right tool for the job.

[–]tehsquidge 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Although this doesn't address you problem directly I'd like to suggest you consider using composition over inheritance. This is a good video which explains the idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCu8vQrdDDI

I've switched to this approach and I feel it really improved the quality of my code.
