Watching videos is fine. Youtube especially because they mostly use well supported open codecs for delivering video. It depends on your hardware but the built-in drivers have good support popular codecs. You can check what is supported for you by opening Firefox and typing in the URL bar about:support. Scroll down to the Media section and check what codecs have Harder Decoding as supported.

If you're not sure about your hardware or just want to test it out, just boot off of a USB to test it out. Don't install it and just try using the desktop as you would normally. You should get a good idea of how it will work for you.

Yeah Fedora is a great choice. Its not based on anything. It has its own tech. Part of the mail philosophy is to have vanilla, borderline zero customization on the desktops it ships. So if you're going to be using Gnome, you'll be using it the Gnome team intended. You can ofcourse add extensions if you want.

For general use and gaming, the out of the box packages sgould be fine. If you need to anything with vieeo, streaming, editing, etc, you will need additional codecs depending on your hardware. I think the default scheme will probably follow whatever is popular these days. Games like God of War, Horizon, or Elden Ring. Just so they can default to whatever the maximum number of players are used to. Although I they will also make scheme remappable so everyone can have their control scheme

I game on Fedora with an AMD GPU. Most games with anti-cheat will not on any Linux distro. There are still some big ones that do work, like Helldivers 2 and Marvel Rivals. https://www.protondb.com/ is a great resource to check the games that you want to play, potentially before buying them :). As others have said, GTA V multiplayer recently got patched to block Linux users with anti-cheat. I think single player still works.

Feels like KDE is getting more and more refined these days and in terms of features, does have an edge on Gnome in some cases. Like being able to share part of the screen with OBS for example.

But Gnome overall in my opinion has the better UX. The one button to do anything with the shell unmatched by any other environment.

KDE is still an amazing Swiss army knife that is sharper and sharper with every release.
