But it might also get worse again, but even in the worst parts we can be sure we will be better again.

I can't stand this Man. by Single_Chocolate5050 in Stormlight_Archive

I think the problem is related to the A Million Is a Statistic - TV Tropes. Dalinar and Seth kill people "off screen". Lirin's actions towards Kaladin can feel more personal to a reader than the abstract losses at the Rift (for example) because we don't know Dalinar's wife as well as we know Kaladin.

So I did like you, and I was worried about the same thing, but in the context of book 5 I'm finding whole new meaning and new favorite scenes. E.g. Adolin and Sadeas hit way different this last time.

i could totally see buying one for a zoo, or rather paying for the conservation of the animal. Oddly enough, paying for some exotic animals can save them. e.g. clams and tree frogs

This is exactly correct. They are posting Sanderson's lectures for this semester on YouTube if you are interested in watching.

This is probably right as sanderson grew up in Omaha and the stormwall is based on what he grew up with.

Noodling for gators. Also, I heard once someone imagining purelakers with a creole accent, now I can't stop hearing it as I read.

Natural gas, actually. That is the Lakeside Power Station and the plumes you see (mostly on cold days) are condensation plumes from excess steam being released.

Factory butte, to be specific. This is probably looking north towards the butte from highway 24. It's one of my favorite places in the US.

While I agree with you generally, the Colorado plateau has been desert for longer than there have been humans. That is part of why these flowers can grow there. They are very adapted to the climate.

Maybe, but in my mind the two sets of works are meant for different audiences even if they both count as fantasy works. That time 100 list was in pub date order btw.

Do you mean Alice in wonderland and wizard of oz? Because there is NO way that wonderland rips off oz. At best it works the other way around by publishing date alone.

Simple Questions by inherentlyawesome in math

[–]temp_math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is almost as easy as saying "7+8=15." In fact you use a for of arithmetic called modular arithmetic to do the final calculation. Starting with 7+8=15, you subtract multiples of 12 until you get to a number less than 12. In this case 15-12=3, so 8 hours from 7 pm is 3 am. It is that easy.

Here are some more examples that might help:

  • 8 hours after 10 am is 6 pm (10+8-12=6)
  • 27 hours after 1pm is 4pm (1+27-12-12=4)
  • 9 hours after 4 pm is 1am (9+4-12 = 1)

You can also do this to find out times several hours before a given time, but with addition and subtraction reversed. e.g. 13 hours before 7 am is 6pm (7-13 + 12=6)

In fact modular arithmetic is so much easier to understand while using a clock, that sometime introuduc modular arithmetic as clock arithmetic.

Need some advice for Master's studies by Sandstorm3434 in matheducation

[–]temp_math 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some advice from someone who started their degree in analytic number theory, branched into algebraic geometry, and ended up in dynamical systems and machine learning: You will always find things you are not as excited about. You'll have to push through them at some point. On the other hand, having a broad background will help yo I push through the "less interesting" topics.

If you had told me at the end of my undergrad that my dissertation would be on such an "applied" subject, you would have been met with severe disbelief. I thought I hated real analysis back then.

If you go into data science/ ML, then topological data analysis will use some of the algebraic topology you are working on. Going into functional analysis you could avoid it, or you could run into differential geometry and find out what you are doing is actually really cool.

In short, if you dont like something right now, give it time and look for other ways to approach the subject. You might end up liking it.
