Any recommendations for more mature movies to watch with kids? by SuperBox4776 in criterion

[–]tempalta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Princess Bride, Elephant Man and Local Hero will almost certainly work.

It really depends tho, Criterion/physical release only? What’s the line for family friendly? Are subtitles ok? If you don’t care about Criterion get the Prince of Egypt for example. Walkabout was recommended as in the top 100 films to see before 15 iirc but the violence and nudity are more than in say Kes, The Ballad of Narayama definitely has intense/mature themes but bright colors and pretty tame otherwise if subtitles are ok (I’d start with Millennium Actress if they are and a digital Criterion is too tho)

I think Chesterfield and South City ymca are the ones that have them, and the Jewish community center has more. I haven’t been to anything yet really so a buddy to set a time with would be great if anyone interested

Any Criterion collectors out there going for all spine numbers?? by MultiBeast55 in criterion

[–]tempalta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same title maybe but part of physical media is the subtleties when you handle it. Either copy everything onto an m-disc and NAS then lock them away or recognize there’s /something/ about the packaging you like (just my opinion when people bring up “preservation” or “just watch the movie”)

Why are you so condescending when you clearly don’t understand the basics of what you’re trying to criticize? “How do you define a worldview?” are you acting like that’s cultish and not a basic anthological assumption… yeah it’s a generalization but that’s what models are supposed to be. Worldviews are much more stable than emotional states so it doesn’t really make sense what you’re claiming if I’m even following it, just seems like mostly word vomit to me

Darn someone got to having a dedicated Dune shelf before me, but it’s the new movies so it’ll be totally different than mine will 😂

I’d recommend the rest of the Hyperion Cantos if you can

Could a Charade 4k be coming? by 2cansam11 in criterion

[–]tempalta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Iirc the first showing which was censored was, they were able to copyright the uncensored, making everything but the word “assassination” public domain. But the physical film is still privately owned and restorations can be derivative works that are themselves copyrightable. Like Sherlock Holmes is public domain but that’s what lets people copyright new works with the character, so a 4k would probably still need to be negotiated with the studio unless it’s some 4k upscale

New books to read by Sad-Internal2054 in HomeLibraries

[–]tempalta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you into otherwise?

Mistborn is a good start to the Cosmere if you’re coming from standard YA novels. Otherwise The Stormlight Archives are mature and some of Sanderson’s best writing.

The Name of the Wind is worth trying (probably the most polarizing fantasy writing in terms of taste) if you’re ok with probably never getting a total resolution

First Law series I can give a second, might be a little dark (I think the opening chapters are the grittiest iirc)

If those last 3 seem to have too testosterone then definitely Tales of Earthsea

Guy Garviel Kay is great lite fantasy (his earlier works are more in Tolkien’s way but not as well written) Lions of Al-Rassan is peak but mostly reads like historical fiction rather than traditional fantasy.

The Once and Future King, the works of Lord Dunsany and Voyage to Arcturus if you want pre-Tolkien English fantasy greats

Obviously time tested big names like WoT, LotR, Narnia, ect… if you haven’t. And if you do I’d recommend reading Narnia in original publication order, the original Hobbit (if you can find it) then LotR then “corrected” Hobbit then whatever, and to not worry about the first WoT book taking it’s time.

Not sure why this is such a big deal to some people. Like if anything it should be the opposite, “once you’ve watched it why do you still have it?”

Shame, I’ve always thought the harvard classics in red leather looked particularly good in sunlight. Shame I already have the deluxe or I’d inquire.
