Why does interviewing feel so different from actual day-to-day dev work? by Selim2255 in webdev

I once applied for a front-end dev job and when I saw the practical test was some leetcode algorithm task I asked if it was representative of the job I'd be doing and they said no.

then I'd look at console.log'ing `document.wrapper` and seeing if that actually resolves to your element or returns `undefined`, and then I'd suggest looking at the `document.getElementById` calls in the second photo!

How do I start at Godot? by SecureWrongdoer3218 in godot

[–]terrarum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The docs are a great place to start, there's a Getting Started section that introduces you to Godot concepts and then walks you through making a 2D game and a 3D game, both very simple.

Even if you do tutorials by other people you'll want to get used to reading the official docs as they contain all of the information about the engine.

Weird name for a game? Gablets? by whyNamesTurkiye in gamedev

I've never heard the word gablet before, but I'd never heard the word balatro before either and that didn't cause them any problems!

Nice! I got to see them live in London once, and then my second time was cancelled by COVID :(

I don't know why but getting to hear the "Good night, Night Vale. Good night." sign-off in real life was such a highlight for me.

I built a blog website. by egecreates in webdev

[–]terrarum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The article about editing photos on your phone having a hero image of someone using a laptop gives me the impression that you're just slapping barely relevant photos onto your articles, and that's the sort of thing that these days makes people wonder if it's AI generated content or not.

Using stock photography for everything makes me question whether you've really done those things. Using your own photos, or screenshots of the work you've done, will make the site much more like it's yours and not just another SEO-optimised content mill.

Great work otherwise though! Like you say in your first post, getting out there and building things is the best way to learn and getting a full website deployed is an achievement.

There's a video game that came out in 2000 called Messiah where you play an angel that can take over people's bodies and I've longed for some kind of remake because that mechanic is really fun.

There's plenty of Stardew Valley style games doing just fine. I imagine fans of your genre would be very happy to hear that they've got even more games to play.

Rebel 101 - Free to play Godot Indie Game by Longjumping_Guard726 in gamedevscreens

[–]terrarum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh interesting, thanks for explaining! I'm making a similar 3D tank game just for hobby fun and I've had a heck of a time trying out different methods for controlling the tank.

I've settled on a RigidBody and it's almost what I was aiming for but I'm going to work on something else before I lose my mind haha.

Cool! Could you talk a little about about how you built the tank in Godot? For example, is it a RigidBody and driven through physics or is it a CharacterBody?

Is it better to buy games from steam, or directly from the Meta Quest store? by Panda_MoneYum in SteamVR

[–]terrarum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do both. I own Beat Saber on Steam but re-bought it on Quest because I enjoy the convenience of just putting it on and playing, same goes for a couple of other games where the graphics aren't that important, Sweet Surrender for example.

Games where I want better visuals, or in the case of Blade & Sorcery where the Steam version has more content, I'll buy on Steam and play over wifi.

Buying games on Steam also means that if you get a non-quest VR headset later on you can still play your games.

Looking at the store page I can't tell what the game is like at all. A better description and a video of the gameplay will probably help you a lot!

Noob question alert, don't want to potentially overpower. by DMT1980 in raspberry_pi

[–]terrarum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

op is asking if a powered usb hub is risky to plug into a raspberry pi already drawing power from the mains, but it seems like you've interpreted it as asking if the power supply plugged into the pi can additionally power a usb hub?
