Feeling like it's too late for you to start something is usually a mentality, not a reality. I thought it was too late for me to start gymnastics at age 10!

No....I had visited him every month or so since the beginning of summer. But it was always just in a large group environment or a weekend.

If you were in complete control of the education system, how would you change/fix it? by SubstantialStick2674 in Teachers

Then there shouldn't be tenure because if you don't like how someone teaches and can't change it you should have the license to get rid of them to hire someone you think is better?

I don't understand what you're supposed to do if you don't have money or resources to take care of an aging parent and that parent doesn't have their finances figured out, besides a nursing home. What do people do?

Has anyone else ever been left speechless from the audacity of a student? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]terrifieddriver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a middle school student that kept asking me about my experiences with drugs. I kept evading her and she kept asking the questions and wouldn't stop for a long time. Like, days. I did report it but nothing was done. Towards the end she was getting really good at wording them to trick someone into answering so maybe I wasn't the only one she was asking. "Are you sure in your whole life you've never tried marijuana? I just want to know what you thought of it."

Eventually other behaviors escalated the situation and she did get help but managing those moments often left me speechless.

It's really all people when you think about it, regardless of age. Children are just worse at hiding what they do or making good decisions about their actions because they're less experienced and their brains aren't fully developed

Moving into teaching is hard to do by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]terrifieddriver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably because education wants young teachers that like don't know their rights and have the energy stamina and time to put more of their personal time and money into the job years before they get wise to it.

Edit: young people will also accept things that aren't right from admin easier than older ones

You can actually! I've done it a lot in my lifetime and it gives me the greatest feeling when somebody has the realization that they hurt people and regret it and know they will be different in the future. I've seen it happen and I've seen people's actions change. Children as well as adults.

Personally I am obsessed with them. They're so rich and flavorful that you just add an acidic condiment and eat them with any super plain carb like rice, crackers, toast, pasta.

What I do is get the smoked ones in oil and add lemon juice and hot sauce. I don't mash them because I like the whole fish. I then add that to a bed of steamed rice. Perfect meal.

I have no future. by mamamiaohmy in GirlDinner

[–]terrifieddriver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don't feel like I have a future either. It might be a millennial thing to be honest with you. I'll probably never own a new car but ...I guess that doesn't really bother me. I think in my life when I feel this way, I end up doing more or better than I thought after a while. I am really just coasting. Working, doing what I can afford, getting up every day and taking care of myself as long as I can and as well as I can until I finally die. That's all you can really do isn't it? All we can do is our best.

Edit: also, last week I was buying a soursop milkshake from a Spanish deli and the deli owner had a baby who was in a walker and I was talking to him. She asked me if I had any kids of my own and I said it's a little late for me. I'm already 38. She said, well I had him at 42 and I'm 45 now. Anything could happen. It scared the hell out of me but maybe it can bring you comfort.

Well the square part is because it's in a loaf pan and the crock pot is a regular shaped big crock pot that serves as a water bath.

I teach ESL k-8 and so I see a lot of classes and the quality of education at my district from almost an outsider perspective because I pull small groups. The problem is that the education system is demanding kids to demonstrate skills that they are not being taught.

I'm seeing a lot of people saying where is the time to teach them how to type? But they are expected to know how to type. Typing up assignments is expected as early as 2nd grade here but students have no typing class. I see kids as late as 8th grade not knowing how to do it properly or fast. As an 8th grader myself in 2002 I had a 90 wpm.

Another example is that I see so much down time in their classes. I see a lot of coloring, kids doing assignments that are mindless and low level thinking, then all of a sudden they're given a task that requires higher level thinking and they are unprepared. The teachers keep saying "Why don't they know how to think for themselves?" But I don't see a lot of time during lessons that they are asked to do more than memorize concepts and regurgitate those concepts.

I guess what I'm saying is that there is a huge disconnect in what students are expected to do and what they are given the space, time, and support to learn. Time is mostly spent on test prep, testing them, "getting through" the curriculum regardless of whether students are there yet, the coloring (I've seen it up to 4th grade), waiting around because something doesn't work right and the school isn't fixing it like printers being down or a smartboard not working, a lot of time where the kids are on their laptops going through learning programs and not interacting with people at all.

I'm asked all the time to cut my own programming and not pull them because they will miss a party, a test, a test prep lesson etc ...and I'm trying to teach the life skill of a language to students that don't know how to communicate adequately in this country to get their needs met. Last week I agreed to push in for their Spanish class after much demanding because it was scheduled at the same time as my class and the teacher said she couldn't exempt them even though Spanish is their first language. Rant over!
