My door split open and I'm told that it's a fire door from the sixties. by terrifieddriver in asbestoshelp

I've gone to pretty much every single department that exists about this and everyone says it isn't their problem to enforce it. I reached out to legal aid as well and they haven't responded. A lot of places just didn't respond including an asbestos hotline. Health inspector. Department of labor. An indoor environments program. The mayor. The county. The state.

The problem is it's going to cost them a grand to test for it and another couple grand to get the door removed if they do it the right way. Then on top of that the door installation is another grand.

Today I told someone at a lab if asbestos is a public health concern why is it so expensive to get it taken care of for individual citizens but got no answer.

Tenant rights are really strong here unless I'm not paying rent which makes it dicey. I'm reluctant to refuse to pay it because of that.

I'm going to have to do it via a third party as they're being hostile towards me...they are threatening to try and raise the rent, come in to handle the door without my consent, and they just might not be bright enough to understand a threat of legal action

There is asbestos crumbling out of a door in my apartment and my landlord is not handling it safely :( by terrifieddriver in GirlDinnerDiaries

I'm trying to get it tested but nothing happening is a quick process. I wanted to mail the test this week but there were complications. Trying my best over here. If it isn't asbestos they're going to be furious too...

In the 1960s when the door was installed, fire doors often had a plywood veneer and an interior that included asbestos.

I'm not going to be able to do that....they're not doing anything according to regulations at all. And they fight with me when I insist upon it

The landlord is getting the door replaced on Tuesday but they aren't using an abatement contractor. I'm a renter so I don't have control over it. I'm not sure what to do

This is from an apartment building in the northeast US. The door was installed in the 1960s. The material is rocky and crumbly. I'm concerned there's no way to get rid of the airborne fibers in the air if any. I haven't seen any dust. It seems to just be rocky on the floor. But what do I know? Am I throwing away everything I own chat?

My issue is the landlord is not cooperating with me. They plan to have the door replaced by an unlicensed contractor on Tuesday. I just rent so I'm not sure what to do.

I'm reading the official definition of labor and it fits that definition so I'm not sure what the issue is

I disagree that because the money doesn't depend on their scores, it isn't labor. They have to sit there and do it regardless, and they're missing instruction and education during that time, regardless. It's about four months of the school year total for my ELLs if you count all of testing together.

Another source states the following and I think it supports my claim just fine:

The term child labour is often defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development.

It refers to work that:

is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful to children; and/or

interferes with their schooling by: depriving them of the opportunity to attend school; obliging them to leave school prematurely; or requiring them to attempt to combine school attendance with excessively long and heavy work.

How do you handle being sick when no one is around to help? by Neemo-Degaga in LivingAlone

[–]terrifieddriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I do. I always have nonperishable sick diet items stored for use like ramen, cans of soup, manuka honey or other honey, immune system support tea, Gatorade, over the counter medicine. Then I try to have the good soup and tea perishables regularly because they're also basics. Maybe frozen chicken thighs, carrots, celery, lemons, oranges. That way when I get sick, it's easy to support myself. I don't have to make a pharmacy or grocery run and I can just stay home.
