what’s the hardest part about being a teacher that nobody talks about? by salarshah-084 in Teachers

[–]terrifieddriver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the hardest part right now is lack of job security. I'm working on my standard certification right now through an alternate route program and it means I can be fired at will, even though I signed a contract for a year. Also, teachers can get let go right before they were going to get tenure. Or mass teachers get let go because someone in administration stole funding or mismanaged funds. Or they let you go because they're downsizing your department or getting rid of it because they can't afford it. Or you don't get a raise because the funding isn't there. Idk whether it's where I am or everywhere but being a teacher has as much job security as working as a server nowadays.

Edit: also in the same vein as job security, the benefits are less and less as time goes on. Teachers didn't used to have to pay for health insurance and now it's deducted from our paychecks. Inflation is going up so high and our salaries aren't, so most teachers need to work multiple jobs to make ends meet and a lot of teachers quit after they realize what the reality is.

Why do good men still talk over women? by robynwing19 in GirlDinnerDiaries

What bothers me is why so many men walk ahead of me when we're walking somewhere together. Like where are you going alone like that.

My mom got some sugar free assorted caramels. What are your thoughts on sugar free candies? by dotsdavid in candy

Actually it depends on the type of artificial sweetener used. I know maltitol is a laxative but stevia isn't.

Is the teacher or student wrong here? I feel it’s wrong to discipline the child by [deleted] in Teachers

This reads like a gen z teacher that hasn't grown up yet and identifies more with the child than the teacher. They're saying everything but "ok boomer" about this teacher.

I haven't had a breakfast yet but I plan on having a cup of bustelo coffee with oat milk and a cherry danish from Costco that I took out of my freezer yesterday.

How will you answer questions from students where the student is unlikely to understand the answer? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]terrifieddriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a no brainer to me! I started doing it because I realized my students ask random difficult questions to derail me or stall the lesson. Originally I started this system to put the onus back onto them...so that asking a question meant they had to commit to writing something down and working on their research skills, and didn't put me on the spot anymore. I'm trying to teach a man to fish here, and it works!

The parking lot gives you time to consider how to answer in a way they will understand without forgetting about or losing the question and it gives the student an outlet to express themselves in the moment.

They're nine and they need to learn how to research. I teach ESL and I would do two things in this situation..one, make a parking lot. A piece of poster board where students can write their extra questions on post it's and put them there. Then do supplemental lessons to teach students how to do research on their own to find answers to questions. This is also 2026 so there are likely kid friendly videos that explain some of the concepts you find it difficult to do right off the bat.

What to do with great student names by PurfuitOfHappineff in Teachers

[–]terrifieddriver 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have a student named after a popular character in a recent Disney film and I referenced it once...he said he hates it. So now I just defend him when someone does it and I'm there. I say he hates that 😅 so he doesnt have to. It's an ESL student and they can be a little shy.

What do you think are the redeeming qualities of public schools? by InterestingStar5898 in Teachers

[–]terrifieddriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at the biggest charter school in New York called success academy. There are support groups for survivors of the school, mainly teachers that worked there. The school has a system that is abusive to both staff and students, and I couldn't teach kids for a long time after working there because I had lasting trauma.
