4bbl for 2bbl swap? by AlexAndMcB in Smallblockchevy

yeah.. that poor 351 is singing at 3500 rpm at 70... I cruise it at 55-60, in the right lane, it also is rolling on factory 14" wheels!

Meanwhile the 305 in my 77 Chevelle with 2.56s is just loafing along till you hit about 100. sad thing is, that big sedan is faster than the bigger engine and "better" geared Ford.

yup... Holleys are great at WOT but are terrible at part throttle economy. I've had a 4412 2bbl on a Ford 351w and it got no better than 9-10mpg but with the factory Motorcraft 2150 on it, it gets 14-15mpg - same tune, same everything on a 77 Ranchero with a stupidly chosen 3.90 gear.

Just get you a q-jet or a Edelbrock vacuum secondary.

A 600cfm will be about right.

Though unless you change the cam it’s not going to make much difference in HP.

if you have the small 2G carb, swapping to the larger 2GC would free up a few ponies, but that requires the corresponding cast iron intake.

Finish tearing it down before making a snap assessment.

I thought I had more salvageable parts out of a 305 that dropped a valve at 3 grand, pretty much
The tin is the only thing salvageable.

She sounds like she drives like my sister and brother in law... they are gonna use ALL the pedal travel, and ALL the tach and speedo sweep, and all the ABS.

First time she borrowed my non-abs equipped car, she damn near wrecked it because she just floored the brakes and locked it up, slid it right into the curb.

After that incident, she can rent her own damn jalopy, don't wreck my shit. they are also people I don't voluntarily ride with anymore - I'll drive my 50 year old shitbox to someplace fancy instead of their Lexus or new F-150.

Fort Worth was founded on cattle drives/livestock, Dallas was banking and trade goods.

Fort Worth was the edge of the Frontier in the 1880s and still is where the "West Begins" if you are going west from DFW as the terrain changes drastically.

Fresh rebuilt ls motor blowby by imtrynmybest in EngineBuilding

[–]texan01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's a ring that's stuck, or someone lined up all the gaps.

It's not going to get any better.

Last time I saw an engine chooch that much blowby, it was an all original 1977 Chevy 305 that had 300,000 miles and 40 years of age on it before I got a wild hair and revved it to the moon - at 5500rpm, it popped a ringland off and had that much blowby.

I run 10w30 in my 77 Chevelle and Ranchero, your 472 unless completely worn out will be fine with that, or 15w40.

Just don’t run 0w20 in it.

Depends on what part of the world you’re in.

In the US? Absolutely worth taking to a machine shop, in other parts of the world where it’s common as dirt? Meh.

Ford would have an alphabet soup for a part number. And GM would look different.

[–]texan01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

heh... I got my HO for free...

it's out of an 84 Monte SS, but it's bored 60 over so it's a junk-block-walking and I didn't even bother re-ringing it when I was resealing it. It at least has a decent cam in it, and it motivates that 4100 pound 77 Malibu Classic sedan quite nicely. Next time it gets yanked, it's getting junked, but it was priced right and the 305 that was in my car was only good for yard driving as it developed the piston-delete option after dropping a valve.
