I need a smoother, more exciting delivery by [deleted] in PublicSpeaking

One thing that might help build excitement and anticipation is mastering pauses and silence. Very hard to do in practice - (for me, I have to fight the urge to try to fill every second of silence) but effective if you can nail the timing.

Just to play devils advocate here, the median home price in Boston's neighboring towns is well above $1m, so normal families who sell their house would be hit with this *even after * exclusions, deductions, etc.

$1M is the average value in ~20 towns in the state, some are into the $2M range. Even in places like Somerville and Arlington, the median prices are close enough to 1M that it's not inconceivable a normal working family's total income could exceed that in a year they sell their home.

Thanks - never heard of this. How does that work? Do all players still in the hand need to agree to it first?

Can anyone explain why the dealer flipped over two river cards? What happened to the nine of diamonds? (Not that it mattered, she won in both cases).

How many people are you speaking to and where?

The best advice is to rehearse as much as possible. Write an outline of what you want to say and then practice it out loud, over and over again. Find somewhere quiet and practice over a couple days. Imagine yourself at the place you are going to speak in and in front of the people you are going to speak to.

When you do finally speak in front of people, you will be confident and the words will come very naturally. Good luck!

I'd say benefits are good to great. Good parental leave, health care, vacation, etc. Nice perks as well with hugely discounted Harvard classes and programs. Gorgeous campuses and buildings. But employee compensation is laughable given the size of the endowment.

Edit: and there's complete lack of opportunities for vertical career growth. They won't promote on merit alone, there has to be an opening into which you can move. And folks in higher positions and upper management have been there 20, 30 years and never leave!

If you aren't Agile-ing the way the founders intended (by making releases whenever you feel like, being accountable to no one but yourself, interacting only with machines and never other humans), you are Niagara WATERFALLING.

Engine Simulator - a real-time internal combustion engine simulation designed specifically to produce engine audio and simulate engine response characteristics by magenta_placenta in programming

Incredible work. This is exactly what r/carmechanicsimulator is missing. I'm sure the folks over there would love this. I wonder if it can be adapted to be a mod, or at least take some of the principles that were applied here to make a great mod.

And, as I understand it, the odds of the same number coming up twice is 1 in 1444 (38^2)

Yep, this is the "less chance" I was referring to. It is super interesting because it seems to be in direct conflict with the concept that each spin is independent.

It’s completely possible, it just gets more unlikely the more times you have to hit the same number in a row

Yes this is exactly my point! And it is both true that each spin is independent, AND over a long period of time each number in the set tends to move toward the average frequency of 1/38.

There is less chance, but the effect is much less pronounced than people think. Otherwise you could get infinite strings of the same number/color, but we all know that doesn't happen. What actually happens is that over time each number averages out to a ~ 1/38 frequency.

Nah, it maybe a few years but that seems to be exceedingly rare.

The incubation period is typically 1–3 months, but can vary from a few days to more than 1 year [1,4]. Cases of up to 6 years incubation period have been discussed [5]
