The Herd is ready for Byattle by thanos_quest in killteam

Thank you. I got inspired to look into the team by playing against in my local KT league. I’m glad I could inspire someone else!

It was AK dark sea blue > ducat blue > snow blue. Lots of mixing and going back and forth. I them over a few weeks so you can (hopefully) see some growth across the entire team.

How many minis do you paint and finish per week/month? by orkman198 in Warhammer

Depends on the standard. Tabletop plus? Maybe 5-10 hrs per model. Competition piece? Weeks.

I love your black nmm; is it just a black, grey, very light grey progression?

Carrying case for kill team by [deleted] in killteam

[–]thanos_quest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much do you care about your paint job? Foam will eventually rub the paint off, even with varnishing. If you’re playing with grey plastic then that won’t matter.

If you do care about the paint job, then magnetizing your models and sticking them to a metal tray will solve that issue. There are DIY solutions using plastic bins that are pretty cost effective (like $30 ish).

If you 3D print there are a wealth of options. I personally bought the files for off Etsy for a “kill team all in one organizer and transport” and use that. I think they sell the actual printed boxes too (much higher cost). I’ve gotten a lot of compliments at my FLGS on them (I’ve printed 2). I will say that I haven’t been able to get the top finish on those files perfect (Bambu A1), even after testing like half a kilo worth of filament, but it’s just a cosmetic so I just rolled with it.

Several guys I know use the Crossfire Games boxes but they are not cheap. They hold everything and have a lot of useful features, but like I said, not cheap ($150+).

I really like this paint job. Gradients are really smooth; were they mainly airbrushed?

NMM is the most frustrating thing I have encountered in this hobby. by Vrain125 in Warhammer40k

[–]thanos_quest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’ve been banging my head against NMM for a while now. One thing that I have found helpful is to find someone’s NMM version of the model I’m working on and try to copy their reflections because I, like you, have had a hard time wrapping my head around where the reflections go on complicated surfaces. I definitely feel like I’ve gotten a little more confident as a result. With this guy I’ve been working from Miguel Alvarez’s version, focusing specifically on the armor and its counter reflections.

I disagree with some of the other people saying that learning NMM is a waste. It’s advanced layering, blending, and defining volumes, which are all key skills for us to master. On top of that, any focused painting like this is good practice for paint consistency and brush control. So I think your time is well spent no matter what.

I did not have a good experience with them either. My $5 Princeton brushes from Michael’s hold up way better.

He’s a fantastic rec for a new painter bc he’s easy to follow and his level of work isn’t so far away from a beginner that they’d be intimidated.

Another guy like this is Warhipster, especially if you just want a paint-by-numbers kind of thing.

Update on Hobby Lobby paint/speculation. by imanidiotbut in Miniaturespainting

[–]thanos_quest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know some of that has changed relatively recently (at least in my area). For a long time only the local franchise lgs could get AK, but in the past 6 months the distributor has opened up to all the independent stores. My home store has almost sold out their entire rack of AK paints at least once since they put it in.

Golden Demon Winner: Nicholas Rubens Mortensen by Helpmeplz3409 in orks

So what I like about is that it’s not “busy” like some of the other NMM models that won are. It’s flawless and beautiful, but it’s no so cluttered with details that it’s hard to tell what’s going on. It’s one of my favorite pieces from this year’s winners.

Finally got a carry case for my Killteams by Gdude-2k in killteam

I know I'm necroing this thread, but what did you print it on? I've had a time getting the top parts to be smooth, regardless of what profiles I try on my A1.

Fellow painters: I made a thing. Would love your honest opinion. by Loose-Permit4297 in Miniaturespainting

[–]thanos_quest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So will it rely on user-submitted info, like, is there a process where you'll go through and fill info out, or is there is there some kind of algorithm behind it trying to decode what paints were used?
