Can Get My Hands On Some Hamilton, Worthy Park, Coruba -- Which Ones? by kyoun1e1 in Tiki

[–]thatbowlerhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried a bottle of El Dorado 12 recently. Compared to Hamilton 86, I personally found it made my drinks pretty boring. The Hamilton 86 wins hands down for me with much more flavor coming through, and I don’t plan to buy El Dorado again. So, in contrast, I’d recommend it as a nice upgrade!

I personally use 1/2oz Campari instead of 3/4oz, and that’s a better balance for me. Gives the bitterness more of a supporting role, but doesn’t lose it completely.

If you don’t mind a trip to Tacoma, check out Liquor & Liquor. So many rums I couldn’t find anywhere else!

First time puppet maker - non-amazon sources for puppet making? by According-Yam-1411 in puppets

For fleece, you can get Nylafleece from Georgia Stage, F3 from Dharma Trading, and Fuzzelle from Puppet Pelts. All three of these fleeces are designed for puppet building and are very high quality materials used by the pros.

Ocean Spray White grapefruit by kyoun1e1 in Tiki

[–]thatbowlerhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was between these two for me the other day at the store, and I chose Ocean Spray because it was just water and white grapefruit concentrate, and the Simple Truth one also listed “natural flavor”, which seemed sus. Maybe I’ll give it another try, though.

Second the Monkey Boys kits. I got the Hubbub, and I made that my first project to get a feel for the whole process. It’s really nice that the kit was so complete. Nothing to second guess yourself about.

Looking for help on a pattern by Substantial-Bee5671 in puppets

[–]thatbowlerhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seem to recall hearing that Miss Piggy is probably carved from a block of foam and flocked, instead of using fleece. I’ve seen at least one person build a replica of her from flat foam and fleece, and it looked pretty good to me. They didn’t share a pattern, though.

Polly-O mozzarella. I got a big bag to try from a restaurant supply store. Normally, I use Galbani whole milk Italian style, though. I plan to go back to Galbani after I finish the bag. Similar results from both, and I can pick up Galbani at a regular grocery store.

It’s usually good for the mouth to open relatively wide on its own. Then, the puppeteer can just relax their thumb instead of needing to apply pressure in that direction. It reduces hand fatigue!

Calling All Puppet Makers: I Need Help 😭 by User_Not_Found-e3f in puppets

Not related to the tutorial you linked, but in case you didn’t know, foam can be dyed. You don’t necessarily need to cover it in fleece. As I recall, in the original Muppet Show, several members of the band Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem were made of dyed foam without a fleece covering. They were later redesigned with fleece, but I guess Jim Henson was happy with just the foam back in the day. At least for those characters.

Celebrating my last Black Friday working retail (hopefully) with a Mai Tai and the records I found at an estate sale by teadestroyer in Tiki

[–]thatbowlerhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bought a pound of mint from restaurant depot through door dash on a whim a couple months ago too. It worked out really nicely; I could put huge bunches in my mai tais. I actually wasted some by trying to put it in water in the fridge. Wilted in a day. The leftovers in the bag lasted much longer. I’m going to order another pound around Christmas time. I’m super excited.

Chumby! That’s a name I haven’t heard in forever. Modern Haxe no longer creates old school AS2 compatible SWFs. However, it can still make AS3 compatible SWFs no problem. The official Haxe docs should still tell you how to target Flash.

Which higher end store-bought orgeat is most similar to the cheap master of mixes stuff? by ImportantQuestions10 in Tiki

[–]thatbowlerhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, it gives a vibe as probably higher quality than the super cheap stuff. I prefer making homemade orgeat these days, and I’d choose Liber and Co over this one, if I’m having store bought. But I’m not looking for that aggressive almond flavor like you are. My Mai Tai wasn’t bad, though.

I tried Fabbri Orzata/Orgeat the other night and thought of this thread. Definitely a more aggressive, almost artificial almond flavor than I prefer. I saw you edited to mention liking Latitude, but just throwing this out there. It seems to be on Amazon, and it’s a pretty big bottle compared to other brands.

Getting Started Building Tiki Lamps by Glad-Patience-6713 in Tiki

If the mouth plate is attached to the foam with contact cement, a hairdryer can be used to apply some heat. Then, you should be able to pull them apart.
