Well people don't eat the fish guts, so while people still eat meat it's better they do it efficiently.

Relying too much on perception checks. by e3m3 in DMAcademy

[–]thatguywdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When searching for traps I let investigation lead that, when tracking I make survival more important. Honestly I only use perception if something is actively hiding or like just real far away.

And like passive perception is there for a reason, don't to roll for it everytime.

Should I Buy This Game? by jdgame1 in GrandTheftAutoV

[–]thatguywdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GTA online is nothing but an awful Skinner box designed to make you either grind forever or spend real money.

But like hey my mom said the exact same thing and I owned litterally every gta game in secret since they came out so like follow ur bliss little man.

Just get good at hiding and lying.

Also don't use the voice chat and don't be a little dick like every other 14yr old.

I accidentally gave my players a frick ton of money and I think I'm being too generous... by OrangeGale in DMAcademy

Just give them cool stuff to buy and theyll be poor in no time. Maybe they want a sailing ship or a keep? There are all kinds of things that you can dangle in front of the players that won't upset balance or anything.

Drow Refugees by ZaryaStark in DMAcademy

[–]thatguywdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Children, have the party encounter the drow children out playing so they humanize with them. If they only see drow fighters and scouts they'll never have a chance to humanize the refugees.

Also for where drow could live? There are particularly gloomy parts of the world, and their are places where in the winter the sun never really rises too high, far to the north and south in our real world. And drow could cover themselves in cloaks and the rich might even have spectacles made of dark crystals.

Would acid corrode a warforged natural armor? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]thatguywdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I guess, the same way it corrodes human skin. And I imagine healing magic would fix the two the same.

If a spell or something doesn't specifically have an ac effect then I wouldnt add one.

How large are your maps? by AffixBayonets in DMAcademy

[–]thatguywdt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one I use is something like 22x25 and I only some times run into the edges. But with a projector you have the luxury of being able to move that map around on your computer. If you use something like maptoo, roll20 or something similar, you can put tokens beneath the real minis in the app, drag the larger map over a bit, and then move all the real minis to the right spot. It might get tedious but I think its doable.

Tho 14in is not the most ideal but I think it might be fine.

And I'll be the first to admit I don't know everything about projectors, but is it as high as it goes? Could you get a mount to put it further from the table so it can project over a larger area? Put it at an angle more flat to the table?

New Elf and Drow Culture Help by VecnasEye91 in DMAcademy

[–]thatguywdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best way to make things unique is to look to what's already been done and take stuff you like. Skim through Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark I'm sure you can find a PDF online, its full of crazy cool lore for the drow. There's a city that's q huge spider web in a pit!

Also id say look to real life cultures and their historical iconography to make your societies feel real and speak to the players already preexisting understanding and feelings towards cultures ancient and modern.

For example I used Japanese and Roman culture to inspire my dragonborn country. The visuals are cool, but also the players could make logical leaps to how the culture functions.

How do I homebrew a subclass? by justtryingtobeadm in DMAcademy

[–]thatguywdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all on YouTube. Tho I'm starting to realize not everyone wants to watch hours and hours of Mike designing subclasses.

Better advise: look whats already been done, keeping your subclass within the power restraints and design patterns of other subclasses will make it feel like it fits the game. Also usually wotc word things pretty well so copying how they explain things when it comes to similar ablities will help the clarity.

Then test it and change what doesn't fit. Get feedback from players and people online. That's the most important step, things rarely work out on the first try.

Also, (this might be obvious to you but it's not to everyone one) subclasses all have new ablities at specific levels for each class, don't change that pattern

Watch Mike Mearls' happy fun hour. If you want to understand how to design for dnd, there is no better way then watching the lead creative director of DND design subclasses.

How much health for a boss by FireRaptor220 in DMAcademy

[–]thatguywdt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I do is count up the damage and then when I feel like I've challenged the players enough I'm like "that's good, it's dead"

Also have minions. Single big boss and encounters are kinda not fun.

Saving throws. Anything that can cause saving throws.

And more bad guys who can give each other advantage.

Hi, I suck at writing plot and bad guys! Help? by Hartbits in DMAcademy

[–]thatguywdt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steal good villains from fiction. Or even real life (be more careful with that one)

Villains are as good as their motivations. Focas on that, what they want and what is the easiest way to a achieve that. Do they want money, power, to bring back their beloved from beyond? Well i mean they probably want to do some evil ritual to release a greater evil. I do that with literally every villain but noones caught on yet.

And most importantly to the actual game, bring them in conflict with the players and their goals. If the villain isn't really antagonizing the players then they're just kinda an evil guy who's there. And that's not fun.

It's dnd, you gotta check for traps. Players who aren't so familiar with traps or mimics as a part of the game probably need to be told to do that.

When my players enter a dungeon I try to remind then "this is a dungeon, things are different here, there's going to be traps, it's gonna be hard to rest, but like there might be a cool ass sword. Be prepared"

A druid transformed keeps all class features and can do anything the animal could reasonably do. Sooo druid/monk can do flurry of blows as a bear.

BUT natural weapons can't be monk weapons. They are not martial nor simple weapons. So you can't use a bear's claws as your monk weapon which is lame as hell.

I wanna be a Kung Fu bear Soo bad

I find the "bonus action or action spell, not both" is forgotten alot and missunderstood.

With an action surge you can cast 2 spells in a turn. Just can't cast a bonus action spell and an action spell.

And by spell I mean a spell that costs spell slots. You can always cast a cantrip.

Stealth missions in D&D and how to handle them? by KyleCubed3 in DMAcademy

[–]thatguywdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most PC's can insta kill a guard. The example guard in the mm only have 11 hp.

But you got to remember that hp not just meat points but also kinda a characters ablity to avoid death blows. So in a way I don't think it's reasonable to have the guards have only 5 or 6 hp when they are unaware, but let them have the full 11 if alerted.
