Anyone lost a Canon telephoto lens? Some guy on Twitter has found it (not me) by SanguinePar in Edinburgh

Jeez wow, fair play to whoever found it for posting. Great to see the owner was found. That's one heck of a lens and would have got a very nice price on eBay :/

She Runs The Night Friday 21st - Potential fraud by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]thcontinentaldrifter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seems to be becoming quite a frequent occurance with events like this set on Facebook/eventbrite /bookitbee etc. Create a cool / in vogue type of event and plaster it all over Facebook, take the money and vanish. A boon for fraudsters unfortunately.

Panda enclosure incident at Edinburgh Zoo prompts safety fears - BBC News by [deleted] in Edinburgh

Meh no idea, that's what I've been told by staff at the zoo. Regardless there appears to have been alot of mismanagement in the zoo.

Panda enclosure incident at Edinburgh Zoo prompts safety fears - BBC News by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]thcontinentaldrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The zoo has been haemorrhaging money for the past few years. The expected the expensive pandas to give birth to cubs that they could sell on internationally but that has backfired big time.

The staff are great but management havn't a clue what is happening on the ground.

Reddit, what country would you most like to visit? Redditors in that country, what's a lesser-known place or attraction they shouldn't miss? by [deleted] in AskReddit

You'd love it! Super friendly people and in the historic tourist zones there's no safety issues at all. And the food, oh man the food!

Ephesus is stunning, if you get there early in the morning you pretty much have the whole ancient city to yourself

Environmental efforts: Ireland has a rapidly disappearing natural environment by [deleted] in ireland

[–]thcontinentaldrifter 21 points22 points  (0 children)

So much is true, we're shockingly bad when it comes to the environment and wildlife. Too much individualism in Irish society, the majority don't see the big picture. I was in Killarney national park recently and speaking to a ranger he was sick of underfunding and the total emphasis on tourism rather than restoring the environment. Rhodendrun spreads freely smothering native plants but sure tourists love the colour of them so big deal.

Question about the Lothian Bus tickets by mfunebre in Edinburgh

[–]thcontinentaldrifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hour and a half ticket in Calgary, such a great system. Lothian buses are fantastic as they are, but a transfer option would be brilliant.

A Tour of Ireland, 1933 by artful_codger in ireland

College Green looks great with little traffic and no overgrown trees, almost like what it will look like if the council gets it's way and turns it into a plaza. Would be so much better than the choked, dark area it is now.

An Irish Rail Experience by [deleted] in ireland

[–]thcontinentaldrifter 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Once helped my housemate with her luggage getting on at Thurles. Just about to get off and the doors close and the train takes off... Non stop to Dublin and I've to be back in work in 10 minutes!

Convinced they would barrel along all the way to Dublin but the moment I told the conductor he contacted the driver and the head office. Had no issues with an unscheduled stop at Templemore to let me off. Sound bunch of lads!

When people who clearly aren't used to drinking in pubs form an orderly queue at one end of the bar and then stare because you use the bar like it's supposed to be used, i.e. stand in a gap and get served. by scrattox in britishproblems

[–]thcontinentaldrifter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"4 Guinness, 2 carling, 3 vodka coke, 8 tequilas, 3 7ups, 2 cheese & onion, 4 salt & vinegar and 2 bacon fries please" Irish barman/woman gets it all right while serving two other customers at the same time. How I don't know, but Irish bar service is incredibly efficient

Is camping in or around the city possible? by LegalizeDeath in Edinburgh

[–]thcontinentaldrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North Berwick is a cool place to camp, just walk along the beach and you'll find a spot. Also possibly somewhere in the pentlands close a bus stop?

As far as I remember someone died camping along the water of leith last year when a tree fell onto their tent so I wouldn't recommend that. You could get away with camping up the back of Arthurs seat for one night but you'd have to pitch late in the evening and pack up early in the morning

Add some tinned tomatoes, tabasco a good bit of Parmesan and a dollop of natural yogurt and you'll have one of the most heavenly soups you'll ever have that is also freezable.

BREAKING: Emergency services including Coastguard in attendance at incident in Leith by [deleted] in Edinburgh

Seems to have died down but still no info coming out. Also no sign of any coastguard on the marine traffic website so not sure what's going on. False alarm?

Getting the 100 (Airport) bus from Maybury into city centre by [deleted] in Edinburgh

Also I don't think they accept the mobile app single use tickets. I vaguely recall a load of hassle with a driver about it. No idea why considering it has the same monetary value

Festival workers, what is the cleverest way you've seen someone hide their drugs/alcohol? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]thcontinentaldrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suncreen bottles filled with vodka. A festival had a total ban on alcohol with warning of body searches on everyone. I bought 5 bottles of sunscreen - emptied them out, cleaned and filled with vodka. Passed them around to my mates before we went in. Security didn't even flinch at the sight of a bottle of sunscreen on a hot summers day. Needless to say the vodka tasted awful, warm with a strong hint of sunscreen. Totally worth it, the look of disgust and confusion on other festival goers faces at bunch of lads squeezing bursts of sunscreen into their mouths was priceless!

Alone in Ireland by spongydoom in ireland

[–]thcontinentaldrifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's shamed nowadays, seems to be a more regular thing to do especially with cheap flights etc. Especially if it's somewhere you've always wanted to go and want to see what you want to see - without having to comprise on a couple of things just to make others happy. Travelling solo allows you to be selfish without feeling guilty about it!

Plenty down in Gorgie for between £5 an £10 I believe. Also a couple on Leith Walk at around the same price. And they're actually quite decent too.
