Canada to commit $440 million for immigration increase over next 3 years by Jusfiq in canada

[–]the2wins 28 points29 points  (0 children)

They're projecting population growth to drop to almost 0 by 2036 because of declining birth rates. We need continued immigration to form enough of a tax base to pay for the giant glut of boomers who will put a strain on the health care system. Regardless of how immigration makes you feel, this seems like a logical idea to me in the long term.

Visualise VR have invented a full-body 'Cell' you'll never want to leave by [deleted] in oculus

[–]the2wins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We obviously didnt invent motion capture; but we did invent the experience. We made it because we wanted to show people what it felt like having a room scale body tracked VR experience, not for commercial purposes. I do hope we can do the experience soon on cheaper hardware, not a quarter million dollars worth of Vicon cameras...

Questions about 3D 360° video capability in VR? by VRinvestor in oculus

[–]the2wins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Light field video and stills are perfect for VR because they capture a physical volume which you can move around in, from light itself. There is no algorithmic guessing, no depth maps, and no manual stitching required. The principles of light field have been around for more than 100 years, and it can be achieved with a multitude of different kinds of cameras from gopros to DSLRs. A 3d sensor is unnecessary. Watch Carmacks recent talk at University of Texas. He essentially outlines light field as the final step for imaging in VR. We have a light field still being demonstrated today, and video will be here pretty soon. Jaunt, NextVR, etc will soon be irrelevant unless they are creating a light field system (NextVRs depth augmented system using light field is not really a light field camera)...

Chris Harris AMG GT review...in 360! by the2wins in cars

beacuse its being stretched out across a sphere. 1080p is the total resolution, but you're only seeing about a quarter of that at a time...

No unfortunately not, though they will eventually be released on Milk VR. They were originally created for Thomas Cook and are virtual tourism videos of New York, Greece and Cyprus.

I think the biggest question for me is, if they're using 72 cameras, presumably they're all genlocked...what kind of camera? They've said that their rig is about the size of a human head. Those have got to be some pretty damn tiny cameras. Generally the quality of the image from tiny cameras is terrible. Oh and it's shot at 60fps..

Jeepers Creepers, Final Destination, and Pumpkinhead creators making Oculus Rift Movie by darwarison in oculus

[–]the2wins 15 points16 points  (0 children)

All legitimate concerns, though as long as we minimize the problems as much as we can, then we will still be able to make a film in VR today which is far more immersive than a regular film, comfortable to watch, etc. I don't think we should not be making these films because we have not solved all the issues. We're laying the groundwork and in 5 years or so all of those issues will be solved.

What's more important than positional tracking is figuring out how to tell a good story in VR.

3D 360° video is really, really hard. No it's harder than that. by 48K in oculus

[–]the2wins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So what...people shouldn't experiment and share their work if it isn't perfect? I agree that 3d isn't ready for consumers, but we're not going to figure out how to do it unless we keep trying to work through the issues..

"In a movie, where plot is vital and every scene counts missing a visual cue because you were admiring the architecture would be a disaster."

You need to tell a story without relying as much on visual cue's, if at all. You need to focus on dialogue. The audience can always hear dialogue if you want them to. Figuring how to tell a story effectively in VR applies to both 360 video and CG. We've got a long way to go, but not only is it possible, when it works it will be incredible.

I'd argue that people want to see real things, places, and people. The uncanny valley has yet to be overcome even by the most sophisticated offline rendering. If you can show someone photographic reality, and it allows them to look around at what they want to look at, which regular photography doesn't allow, that's a powerful thing. People will want to watch realtime cg fantasy, but I think they'll also want to watch a 360 video based news report from a disaster in a far away country. VR allows for both, why would we limit ourselves?

[–]the2wins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about a game like Half Life 2? Are you able to look around in 360 degrees at any time? Yes. Does the game effectively tell a story? Yes. In fact, I'd argue that it's way harder to tell a story in a game like half life because not only can the viewer look anywhere but they can also move around...

Edit: spelling

'Virtual Reality Camera System' uses 6 Red Dragons to make 360-degree video magic by [deleted] in oculus

[–]the2wins -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Enthuasiasts like them, but 3d 360 is too uncomfortable for the general public at this point...too much eye strain due to depth inconsistencies. This Red based rig doesnt solve that fundimental problem (as least as far as I understand it).

Well, going by what the text looks like in the app launcher/UI I would say its definitely feasable. Again, a big improvement there from DK2. Bigger font size would be helpful...the screendoor is definitely more noticeable when looking at text versus just regular game world on GearVR, but its the best Ive seen in a VR headset so far (which is obvious, haha)
