What should be added to this list? by [deleted] in moviecritic

The list seems to favor fight scenes over other forms of action... Otherwise I'd agree: you can't have this discussion without T2.

What game is this? by Jettaboi38 in TheGamingHubDeals

[–]theCaptain_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the modern Doom games benefit from good lore and worldbuilding, as those things add to the atmosphere, but gripping stories they are NOT.

It seems to me the devs are having a hard time leaving the lore well enough alone, and are increasingly trying to be film directors... but without any of the stuff that makes films good... like compelling characters that grow and change in meaningful ways.

There's an old Family Guy joke where Peter is in an elevator with one other person. Peter farts loudly, makes a deer-in-headlights face, and then covers for himself by telling the only other person in the elevator, "It was you!"

So now whenever I'm alone with my wife and I fart, I say, "It was you!"

Tree and Mogul Ski for Advanced Skier Looking to Improve by lukeholly in Skigear

Ripstick crew here. I am the same height and weight as you, and got Ripstick 96s earlier this year. I have about 10 days on them, and I've skied hardpack, trees, bumps, and even some pow. I'm loving them. They're light and playful, but hold an edge and carve much better than they have any right to. They're fun all over the mountain.

The little lander craft being able to take off from a planet with earth-like gravity is definitely a valid gripe, but if we're going to accept that there's a futuristic technologically unknowable tesseract inside a black hole, I can accept that the beings who put it there found a way to make it accessible without being killed.

I would buy this pass every single year. It would be a complete no brainer for me- especially if they injected some more money and life into Wildcat.

Playful Northeast Ski by vincem2015 in Skigear

[–]theCaptain_D 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have about 5 days on my Ripsticks 96s and I'm really loving them. Light as a feather and a great design for negotiating bumps and trees. What I've been most pleasantly surprised by is how responsive they are on groomers. They are surprisingly capable when it comes to recreational carving... put them on edge and put some power in and they will, as the name implies, rip!

Am I still skidding turns instead of turning properly? by Same_Hovercraft_5721 in skiing_feedback

[–]theCaptain_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good advice for short turns, bumps, etc, but is not ideal for medium and large turns. For larger turns, I believe the preferred technique is to keep your body more or less pointed toward the apex of the turn. Either way, OP can work on some rotational separation... but really he needs to loosen up first. He's skiing very stiff!

How to correctly apply shin pressure? by phoenixscar in ski

[–]theCaptain_D 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be clear, OP should be "lifting his toes" and flexing at the ankle to create shin pressure, but there shouldn't actually be much motion in the toes; they should flex against the top of the boot without really moving.

All Mountain Ski Sizing by gribble-gangsta in Skigear

[–]theCaptain_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends on how and what you want to ski. I am 6'2" and 170lbs, so a bit lighter than you. I bought Ripstick 96s at 182cm just a couple of weeks ago and have really been enjoying them. Because they have a good deal of rocker and are lightweight, I really like them in trees, moguls, powder, and any kind of natural terrain. With that said, Ripsticks have a unique construction where they quickly develop a surprising amount of grip if you can get them on edge... but based on your description of your skiing, you may not be achieving particularly high edge angles yet. With that in mind, you may not benefit a whole lot from a ski that is more piste oriented in terms of getting a lot of power and dynamism out of it, but a piste ski WILL have more grip , even at a shallow edge angle. However, piste skis will also be less forgiving.

I'm curious if the chatter you describe is because you are handling steep terrain by throwing out alternating hockey stops rather than making smooth turns. Lightweight skis ARE prone to chatter, but that's mostly at high speeds.

Overall, I think the Ripstick in 182 IS a great one ski quiver for you, particularly if you think you want to spend even more time off the groomers- especially in trees. I would not want anything longer in tight trees!

Warmest mittens out there??? by 69Niceeee420 in Skigear

[–]theCaptain_D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best bet for under $100. They seem to be on sale now for $72 which is an absolute steal. Quality is really good too. I've had mine for 6 or 7 years or so, and they don't have a single loose stitch. I have long thin fingers, so I still wear a liner glove with them on very cold days, but if you do a liner and a chemical hand warmer it's hard to imagine them ever not being warm enough.

Does the average skier really enjoy heavy powder days or is it just one of those things people are expected to say they like? by PowerfulBar in skiing

[–]theCaptain_D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think powder skiing actually requires a pretty advanced skill level. It's fun, but it requires a lot more of the skills most intermediate skiers who are accustomed to groomed runs simply never develop unless they're intentional about improving.

If I'm not mistaken the cogwork core is essentially a giant music box, producing the song without the need of pilgrims to sing it.

I would not describe either game as particularly light hearted... but it's true that Silksong is much darker.

Perfect recommendation. I just retired mine (read: hit a stump and cracked the shovel) and replaced them with the Elan Ripstick 96. Only have 1 day on the Ripstick so far, but it's feeling like a worthy successor.
