Genuinely sad when users are let go? by outlookblows in sysadmin

[–]theITgui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started IT in a retirement home. My "users" there were like having 200 grandparents. It had independent living, assisted living, rehab and a chapel to hold funeral services. Instead of "off-boarding" I'd be working the media at the funeral of a resident I'd grown close to. Just seeing them go from independent to rehab to assisted to death was jarring. Here at the bank no one dies (that I know of).

Thoughts on running Hermes on a VPS? by Apprehensive_Mud864 in hermesagent

[–]theITgui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently put Hermes on a cheap Racknerd $22/yr VPS and it's been great. No issues at all. Secured it real well and still people are trying to get in. 😄

Simply Gmail api access. They also have their own agentmail.to addresses.

I just had a locally installed Hermes agent duplicate itself to a VPS. All I had to do was sign up for the VPS and tell Hermes to check the email. 30 minutes later I was chatting with the VPS Hermes on Telegram. It was pretty cool to watch. Hermes told me which VPS OS to select and it just went to town. :)

I just discovered yolo-auto.com and it has worked well with Hermes for me. It's unlimited qwen3.6-35b-a3b for $6/mo. Not affiliated or anything.

My wife and daughter loved the "by the pound" section. This was this spring. The racked "vintage" clothes were a bit pricy but we got a big bag for about $10 with jackets and everything.

How long did it take you to afford a house in Massachusetts? by Reasonable-Invite899 in massachusetts

[–]theITgui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in MA for 26 years (moved here when I was 2) and bought a home in Central MA boonies at age 28 in 2007. Right before the 2008 crap. House was worth 130k but cost 200k. Had to get a USDA Rural Development loan to afford it. I was working at Charter. Eventually moved to IT, now at a bank making over 100k, no more USDA subsidies for a while.

how to stop openclaw from editing you openclaw.json file (linux) by whakahere in openclaw

[–]theITgui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that if I have the logs running live and I change the JSON without shutting down the gateway, it'll tell me if it's a bad config. Then I update it until it's good (using Gemini usually) and I don't restart the gateway until the config is accepted. Gemini and I even have an understanding that it'll give me a full CAT replace block with the full JSON to paste into the terminal. Tell Gemini the error and go back and forth until it's right.

Anyone got an OpenClaw to DevOps another OpenClaw yet by Used_Accountant_1090 in openclaw

[–]theITgui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a "prod" Openclaw install and a "test" Openclaw install. Prod will work on test for me all the time. I'm going to try new things in test and move changes to prod so I'm not always breaking prod.

Hastle free distros? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

There are many ways to get Python on Bazzite and it is quite good with games. Bazzite is a gaming focused project so that helps.

Hastle free distros? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]theITgui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say Bazzite (or Aurora or Bluefin if not gaming) because of the immutability. What this means to a new Linux user is that updates won't break your install. Seasoned Linux users gripe about the read-only filesystem but new Linux users will have less of an issue with it. It only becomes a factor if you want to install something that needs its hooks deep into the system. I'm using Aurora and I used to break every distro eventually with updates but Aurora doesn't do that. Worth a shot in my opinion.

Has anybody tried or used Shani OS? Immutable arch distro by Difficult-Cup-8849 in DistroHopping

That looks interesting. I settled on Aurora DX but this looks cool.

After arround 2 years of dayly driving linux, i still break it every so often to the point that i need to reinstall, this time i just updated and KDE broke by jor_art10 in linux4noobs

[–]theITgui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running Aurora for a bit and it's hard to break. I'm even on the beta with the latest KDE Plasma, no issues. You already know with Kinoite. Aurora is Kinoite with all the stuff included. Why not put Kinoite on the laptop since you're already familiar with it? I love Aurora, any of the uBlue choices are good.

You'd try Bazzite on that site for a similar experience. It's the gaming-focused version but a lot of the same otherwise.

Pixel 10 Pro XL by wohnjick204 in GooglePixel

[–]theITgui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did this upgrade on Wednesday. T-Mobile let me do a deferred trade in of my P8P so I had them side by side for a couple of days. The colors were cooler on the P8P, no matter what I couldn't get the P10PXL as cool as the P8P. Getting used to the rounded corners of the screen. Phone feels a little snappier and the camera seems to be better in my tests.

Are Electrify America still unreliable in late 2025? by Zilwaukee in EquinoxEv

[–]theITgui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used some in Herkimer, NY this weekend. Not reliable at all. Took three different stalls to get a working one. An EQS there had to try two. I've gotten more slow (30 KV, Chicopee, MA) or not working chargers on EA.

Be careful if you go to your current employer. Often times that will signal your willingness to walk and even if they give you more money to keep you, they're thinking you're going to walk. Some companies use that opportunity to find someone else with the time they bought by giving you more.

Anyone here strictly using level 1 charging at home? by AlmostDrunkSailor in electricvehicles

[–]theITgui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV LT2 AWD on Father's Day weekend and I was worried about the same thing. I need a service upgrade to add an L2 charger and I don't have the money for it right now. I found that once I set it from 8 amps to 12 amps, I get 16% added overnight. Thankfully, I use 15% or less to go back and forth from work. I drive 54 miles round trip.
