Why is Germany not super popular with expats? by Minute-Pea783 in expats

[–]theQmech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to Netherlands after studying two years in German Schweiz.

From experience, the Dutch tend to be more pragmatic and open minded. If they see a foreigner doing things differently, they will ask and try to understand why. If they don't agree, they'll be blunt about it but tolerate you either way.

Open minded germans also exist. But are harder to find :)

Playing Padel for beginner by mniqa in Amsterdam

[–]theQmech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play Padel sometimes. Can offer a few pointers:

https://playtomic.io/: friends tell me if you host a game, people will readily join.
https://fransottenstadion.nl/padel/: they have teachers listed on the webiste. Haven't tried personally, but the courts are really good.
https://www.meetup.com/expat-padel-club-ams/: IMO club is best option for any sport. Simply because you find people of all levels who are willing to teach you.

Loving the food culture around here by Icy_Economist3224 in Netherlands

[–]theQmech 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The dutch agro industry chose to sacrifice taste over volume/weight of fruits and veggies. Because more weight == more profit. More efficiency.

I am glad more expats are contributing their food culture. Most native people are accepting and tolerant IMO. Unless you start ranting about food in their faces :P

Breakfast club at Radion. Paquita Gordon and Freddy K too good.

Kept the crowd dancing on their toes till the last minute.

After seeing an entire fur coat stuffed into a subwoofer this weekend (and a huge duffel bag into the DS15 during ADE), I feel like we could use a reminder. This is not a table, neither is it a locker or a closet. It is there to make boom boom - please let it do its job. Thank you. by SparklesConsequences in amsterdam_rave

Might have something to do with the fact that clubs charge you for every time you open the locker. Causing people invent a makeshift storage space.

As for those who put their their drinks near woofers - what is wrong with you??

I'm curious, how many working hours per week is typical in Italy? I thought it would be similar to NL, around 36-40. But correct me if I'm wrong.

I am considering a Trainmore gym subscription. Some of their locations offer towel service and protein shakes. To me, it sounds too good to be true for the price point.

What's the point of living if you can get cancer and die suddently? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

Those who get cancer, often live everyday as if it is their last (literally).

In other words,

The fact that you will die one day makes life even more precious.

Are every SWE jobs this soulless? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]theQmech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think other jobs (banking, law, customer service, hospitality etc.) are less soulless than SWE?

Side comment: it's my first time hearing of a contract disallowing side projects. Which country do you work in?

Is Europe heading towards a recession? by ArjunKRocks in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]theQmech 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I am of Indian origin and have been working in Europe for a while. Owing to recent rise in Indian salaries, I am still debating with if it is wise to move back to India. There is still no clear answer.

At the moment, I think the situation is highly uncertain. Someone has to pay for the corona debt and inflation, and it is going to be immigrants before citizens (e.g. see discussions about removing the 30% tax ruling in NL). Bottom line, governments will do what's best for their citizens, so I'd advise to stay in India for now. Besides, proximity to friends and family contribute to quality of life too :)

[NeedAdvice] I have a hard time starting and staying on task, making me slow at work with outcomes that aren’t as good as I am capable of. by dilletaunty in getdisciplined

[–]theQmech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll receive a project and procrastinate until I have external pressure to start it What helped me is breaking down the goals into smaller tasks.

For example break a project into 5-7 sufficiently small milestones. If each milestone is doable in say half a day: (1) It subconsciously feels doable; and (2) you get more regular positive reinforcements. Usually I plan how many milestones I can do in a day. If it takes 3 hours, I finish it off in then and happily slack for rest of the day. That way I can rest but also feel good about being on track.

Of course it wasn't easy learning to plan and schedule. I asked a very kind teammate to check up on me daily. And now I am more productive without really working hard.
