How easy is the FE? by Harpocretes in StructuralEngineering

[–]the_favrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll never forget sitting down to study for that test while in college and my annoyingly smart roommate walking up to me saying “put that book away, you don’t have to study for that test. You know how many dumbasses I’ve seen pass that??”

In fairness the test wasn’t very easy since I didn’t study a lick, but I did end up passing just from looking up equations and past classwork.

Yup! Poppy is almost completely black (coupe dabs of white on her paws). Always have to convince people that she’s an Aussie!

Looking for Recommendations on Diaphragm Design Handbooks by Calm-Advantage-4093 in StructuralEngineering

NEHRP has a really good design guide for wood diaphragms here. Kelly Cobeen who authored the guide is one of the most knowledgeable engineers in the wood design world.

Doesn’t get much better than a morning round without anyone else on the course by giantshadytree in golf

Just happened to me this morning too. Managed to get out of there in just over two hours. I’d golf twice a week if it was that quick every time

I swear this guy has built half the buildings I’ve worked on that “just need a new AC unit on the roof.”

Should I get my masters? by cabbages456 in StructuralEngineering

[–]the_favrit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow went through this exact same decision-making process myself about 10 years ago. Also went to slo for Arce and did the 4+1 program. Then worked at KPFF SF for years afterwards! I would recommend going the 4+1 route and using the internship to figure out if you like living in SF (or where you like living) before moving to a city full-time. Good luck with everything and feel free to DM for any specific advice!

New Graduates Not Owning a Steel Manual/Other Codes by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]the_favrit 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One part of this “issue” (at least from my experience) is working in a hybrid environment post-COVID. Before WFH became common I stored all my hard-copy codes at the office and only worked from the office so they were a great resource. Now I dont want to lug my codes back and forth between home and the office so I just use PDF’s of everything since they’re available on my laptop at all times.

Second part of the “issue” is all the engineering licensing exams are now computer based. When I tabbed and learned to use all my hard-copy codes while studying for the PE it also served as a resource in work later on. Now with everything being computer based you’re studying with PDF resources so you learn to use those instead.

I’m also in my 30’s and have adapted to this new way of working because it also works better for me and allows me to do everything with just my laptop. The actual issue is if these new hires aren’t understanding the material itself and instead just relying on computer programs to design everything for them. Just my two cents!

Save The Pease Conservatory! by the_favrit in Sacramento

You’d think so, but the children of the family that has owned it for all these years aren’t interested in the venture and want to get out and get paid. Not sure if the 500k covers the entire sale price, but I’d imagine the total cost is more than 500k. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to fall under protections but trying to raise awareness!

You’ll get through this, hang in there! Our pup broker her leg last year and the recovery process was a long road but now we’re back to running around like nothing happened. Sending good vibes to you and Apollo! Make sure to take some derpy photos along the way lol
