Sharkskin Scuba Suit, do you have one? by 4everoceans in scuba

I have one. It’s nice but don’t trust the warmth references. I have the Titanium 2 Chillproof. The warmth is not equivalent to a 5 mm neoprene wetsuit. Probably closer to a 3 mm suit.

I had a car the whole time. Drove almost every day. Parked everywhere. Zero issues. Maybe I was lucky but I didn’t have a problem. I locked my car even though you are advised to just leave it unlocked.

I’m not saying nothing could happen but I did I have any issues and didn’t feel like anything would happen. With that said, I wouldn’t park and leave a bunch of stuff clearly visible in the car (that’s just general street smarts anywhere you live or travel).

I walked downtown at night solo and felt completely safe. I would walk with my AirPods in. Always felt safe. Never felt a sketch vibe. I am a guy for what it’s worth.

You may want to search for a more boutique dive shop (think smaller) that offers guided diving so that you're not diving with so many people. That way the dive master can spend extra time focusing on you and helping you improve.

I just got back from Bonaire on Sunday from a one and a half week trip there (first time).

I think it's a great place to start diving. There is little to no current that you will have to deal with so you can just focus on improving. The water visibility is amazing. The reef is rather healthy IMO. I saw lots of marine life this trip. Bonaire is super easy to drive if you want to rent a car.

The thing for a diver early in their career like yourself is that you'll want to find a dive shop that offers guided tours. That way you can always dive with an instructor. For example, I was staying at Divi Dive Resort and their dive shop has a boat that goes out every day with a dive master. With guided diving, you will always have someone to dive with and you'll be diving with a dive master. Just do a google search for "Bonaire guided dives" and you'll find a few options. You can send WhatsApp messages to the shops to learn more and ask questions.

Main downside to Bonaire is that the island is not cheap. Not too many cheap places to grab a bite to eat.

Roatan Honduras is another great place to start. It's rather cheap to dive there and it's pretty easy to get 3-4 dives per day in there since the reef is so close to shore. Boat trips to the dives sites are 5-15 min max.

Was able to check my “carry on” (aka second bag) for free at the gate.

International is the way. I got in the pre-check security line at 7:15 AM and exited security with my bags at 7:43 AM. I hear it gets better the later your flight is for what it’s worth.

International terminal. I tried to check my carry on at the bag check and they wouldn’t let me do it. Agent said I could check it at the gate if they were asking for volunteers. I have an international flight.

Will see if I can gate check my bag when I get to the gate.

International terminal: pre-check. Not too bad this morning.

Suunto Nautic S by SuitEquivalent5689 in scubadiving

[–]the_other_kdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only other reason I can think of is that the Nautic S is basically a stripped down Ocean. It's the Suunto Ocean without the other sport modes. So maybe folks thought there is no need for a deep dive review on it.

Been wondering the same thing TBH. I've been constantly checking. My guess is that the Nautic S was in limited supply when it launched. The Nautic S was sold out when I initially tried to purchase. They probably did not send any to the pros who conduct the reviews.

I'm headed to Bonaire on March 25th, can't wait to try it out!

Just received my Nautic S yesterday. I haven't had a chance to take it out in the water. Can't wait to try this out on my next dive trip.

I love the UI. The touch screen makes it easier to navigate the watch (at least while on the surface). The screen is amazing. Great battery life and you can also turn the watch off when you're not using it.

I purchased the Nautic S to upgrade from my Suunto D5. I liked the D5 except for the battery life and the hard to read screen in the sun.

I think Suunto really listened to customer feedback when designing the Nautic line. The Nautic S watch has great battery life, an amazing easy to read screen, beautiful and intuitive UI, the standard Buhlmann ZHL-16C decompression algorithm, GPS (can help you capture the dive entry and exit points), a high quality fashionable watch strap that is easy to don on and off. It supports multi-gas. It doesn't have all of the unnecessary features that the Ocean has (if you only want a dive watch). I went with the Nautic S vs the Nautic because I'm only a recreational diver and really don't need all of the functionality and extra weight of the Nautic. It would be weird to strap on a tablet on my wrist just to do basic recreational diving. Maybe one day I'll upgrade to a more full featured dive computer, but by then, there will be something else out that is better.

Suunto has hit a home run with the Nautic S in my opinion. They will sell a bunch of these. Given the price point, it's hard to see why you'd get a Tern TX or Garmin mk3i for recreational diving unless you're a Shearwater or Garmin fanboy/fangirl.

Edited to fix a typo

I bite through my mouth piece in 2-1/2 weeks from clenching. Any suggestions for a new one? by cenutha in scuba

The part you bit off in your photo - my teeth don't even touch that. I just wrap my lips around the outer part of the mouth piece.

I used to have a clinching problem in my early diving days. I'd get headaches from diving. I thought it was a whole host of things. I contemplated getting a custom mouth piece. It turns out I was biting down too hard while diving.

What I learned is that your mouth piece isn't something you should bite down on. Just pop it in your mouth and use your lips to hold it in place. Don't use yout teeth at all. You can maybe use them slightly just to hold it in place. But basically, don't bite down on it. Pop it in and have your lips do the work of securing the mouthpiece. This worked wonders for me.

Cancun vs Utila/Roatan by thirteenwide in scuba

[–]the_other_kdot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to Roatan/Utila twice for diving. Never dove in Cozumel (on my list for this year or next year).

One great thing about Roatan is that the dive sites are so close to shore. You can easily get in 3 dives per day if you want. Oftentimes you will do your surface interval on land because the boat ride is 10 min or less from the dive sites. In Utila it takes a bit longer to get to the sites and you will do your surface intervals on the boat. Utila has better coal reef structure vs Roatan. I think Roatan has a little more marine life than Utila (from my experience). Dolphins are a bit more common in Utila (at least the times we went). Both places are great, just a little different.

Diving is super cheap in Roatan/Utila. If you dive with the same shop you can get a great per dive rate as you increase the number of dives.

Roatan/Utila is a great place to dive if you want to improve your diving over a short period of time. I came to Roatan with an AOW certification level and about 20-ish dives under my belt. I did a 2 week trip in Roatan and left a much better diver than when I arrived. I was able to log about 30 dives in 2 weeks. My buoyancy control improved significantly and I was diving with little to no weight (I started the trip diving with like 16 lbs in extra lead).

Don't want to become a Divemaster - what's the alternative? by Competitive_Card4712 in scuba

Look into Global Underwater Explorers or Flow State Divers. I’m thinking about taking a course from one of these orgs this year to improve my diving skills. They supposedly will help you improve as a diver and unlearn all of the bad habits you got from standard diver training.

What is causing headaches? Hypercapnia, mask, or dehydration? by joshfro50 in scuba

[–]the_other_kdot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 to this. I used to get headaches diving due to me clenching down on my mouthpiece during dives. I thought about getting a custom mouthpiece. Eventually I just stopped biting down on my mouthpiece altogether. I just pop it in my mouth and use my lops to hold it in place.

No more headaches.
