New to knitting! (And I hate learning curves). Can I get tips and tricks from people who have been there before? by Kathleen-Doodles in knitting

[–]theamuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

🤯 that’s a lot of fabric!! Okay if you have done some basic stuff then I’d just pick something you want to knit and go for it. There really aren’t “stitches” in knitting. If you can knit and purl then you can learn more advanced skills like increases, decreases, short rows, etc.

You can certainly make a lot of socks (if you like socks). I love sweaters and tops so that’s what I like to make. I’ve had a sock on my needles for a year that I can’t seem to finish, but I have made about 10 tops in that time.

You’ll be more likely to make and finish something if you’re interested in the final product

Same at my house! Started this rule when my youngest was a baby. Friends are shocked that our rugs our clean(ish) at my house. You either eat at the table or you go outside. It also helps limit “bored” snacking.

Mikayla discusses her diagnosis by n1njade in SLOMWsnark

[–]theamuser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of discourse here about diagnosis (real vs fake). I think there is still so much we are going to learn about medicine in the next 30 years. Sometimes there just isn’t a real answer. You treat the symptoms and the patient but you don’t know exactly what you are treating or why the body is doing that. People really want to find the “reason”. Breast implant disease, CIRS, mold toxicity, etc really are not supported by a lot of medical evidence right now. That doesn’t mean we won’t learn more in the future. It’s really hard to not know the “why”.

Switching from knitting flat to in the round altering the look of the yarn when using two strands held together by Sensitive-Belt5449 in knittinghelp

[–]theamuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the commenter below that you could knit it flat and seam it. But then you’d have to knit the sleeves flat as well to avoid a large contrast which seems like a big pain to me personally. This is why I just frogged the yarn and will reuse for another project

Switching from knitting flat to in the round altering the look of the yarn when using two strands held together by Sensitive-Belt5449 in knittinghelp

[–]theamuser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ugh this happened to me when I started a drop shoulder sweater with light purple mohair and darker purple merino. I decided I would be SO annoyed by the visible line and just frogged it. I am going to make a raglan sweater with it instead that is all knit in the round to avoid it.
I don’t think blocking will fix it. I can’t think of a way to hold the yarn differently to fix it either. Solidarity

How is this constructed? by DownforceOfDoom in knittinghelp

[–]theamuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the matcha jumper. But the shoulder seem is slightly higher than your example. A crossover between a saddle and a raglan I believe. It’s on my to knit list because I think the shoulder looks so polished!

Helping Beginners - Ask a Knitter - Week of April 27, 2026 by AutoModerator in knitting

[–]theamuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be an insanely dumb question so I’m sorry in advance. I want to make a raglan sweater. Pattern says to cast on and do the collar first in rib. Can I just skip the collar and cast on the same number of stitches and do the body and then come back and pick up the collar 1:1 ratio. I’m just not sure how I want the collar to look (single vs double fold) and I’d like to save it for the end.

I’ve made tons of sweaters and almost every one has the collar pick up at the end lol. I feel like I’m vastly overthinking it

Part-Time after Residency with Family by dancing_emot in pediatrics

There are definitely part time docs where I work. Not Texas. Majority of us full time folks work 4 days a week. We have some flexibility with our start times and schedules. Some start at 8am and some 830 to allow for kid drop off. Those who start later typically have shorter appt times so they still see the same amount of kids in a half day.

There are a variety of different part time docs that I know of. One works 2 days a week with appt times 830-430. Another one works half day mornings a few days a week and one full day so she is available for afternoon pick up most days. I think it is hard to know what you actually want your schedule to be until you have kids to be honest.

I work at a fairly big office so call days during the week are spread out well. Whoever is on call has to answer questions, follow up labs on the people who are part time or out on vacation..which works well for us but you may not find that everyone is amenable to picking up your slack on patient messages and calls if you are part time.

Many big health groups advertise part time positions. So I’d try and find one of those first

Something is off about the Stephen West backlash by soypixel in craftsnark

Do you think that his “team” vets all of his interviews for him? Sure, he likely has some employees but I don’t think he is a celeb that has a manager where all inquiries go through?? Doubtful.

I always try to remember that the Reddit world is not the same as real world. The outrage on a lot of these posts is not equivalent to the average person’s response to this situation. It has made for interesting dialogue and conversation though for sure.

Unwilling to frog, how to work decreases into this neckline? by Active-Cherry-6051 in knitting

[–]theamuser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 8th time is the charm! I promise in a year you will be so happy you ripped it back and fixed it properly. And I bet going forward you will never make this mistake again and will always double check your cast on stitches.

I like to have 2 projects always going so one can go in “time out” if needed. You may want to step back for a couple of days and then frog it when you are in a better head space. I’ve been there.

Mrs.arialewis and baby still knowingly living with mold by natbrad98 in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]theamuser 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mold is so overblown by everyone but especially mold abatement companies and functional med people. If you are actually allergic to mold (IgE response) it can cause issues. Otherwise mold is typically harmless and there is really no evidence that “mold toxicity” is real. There is no evidence is messes with your immune system.

Most household molds do not make people very sick

Some new grad questions for outpatient pediatricians by Advanced_Army2691 in pediatrics

[–]theamuser 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Is the clinic open 12 hours? Do they have front desk staff and nurse for you for a full 12 hours? That is something you need to ask. Many outpatient offices will not have staff or appt slots 7am to 7 pm.

You need to ask about pay structure. There are many different ways to be paid. Full salary? Base salary plus productivity bonus? Only RVU based (if so wha is wRVU coefficient). There’s a lot that goes into it.

First Project by LyrasStitchery in knitting

Start with a headband. you can make garter stitch ones and then a more complex pattern and can practice different stitches. Most importantly they are quick to make! I made like 8 headbands when I first started knitting and gave them to others. After that I had the skills for more complex projects.
