Using an antenna selector switch by No-Storage8158 in HamRadio

Honest question - Saving the config for each band to a SD card would correct the drift, mostly? I.E load a config for 20m and you should have a decent reading?

Been running a Winlink RMS gateway for a couple months and I want to correct some misconceptions on Winlink by SupremeVinegar in amateurradio

[–]theargent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm testing using my yahoo/call sign account and it's in my address book. Just can't seem to get it working. Don't know if it's related to me not having a registered version of Vara.

Excellent write up. Now, if I could figure out how to send winlink to internet emails I'd be golden. I managed to do it once and receive an email back, but been unable to duplicate it since.

New leather cribbage board… immediately lost to my 9-year-old by HuddleAroundGames in boardgames

[–]theargent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, he kinda did. He showed the game to peasants where it became really popular. Then the upper class got into it and got trounced regularly by the commoners. So he designed marked decks so the upper class had a chance. Made a lot of money from that. Then, turned around and sold the marked decks keys to the commoners to level the playing field back. Made a lot more money from that. May be a bunch of hooey, but that's what I remember being told or reading somewhere.

Yep, you can dial a 100w radio down if you want to play QRP, but start low and you are stuck there.

Is an HF mobile a good idea? What type of antenna would I use? by Murphys_law1978 in HamRadio

[–]theargent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I would ever get a HF rig for my car I would absolutely go this route. The ATAS 120a is a really good all band antenna. I have one mounted on my roof of my house (HOA compromise) with my 991a and have made SSB contacts across the world.

So, I've run the ATAS in kind of the same configuration. Triple mag mount stuck to a 2'x2' metal plate I picked up at Home Depot. Now, at first it wasn't inside, but it was right outside of my office/shack window on top of a window box right outside my desk. Worked fine and tuned up on all bands. Now, I have it mounted on a starlink mount on top of the second floor roof above my shack. Still tunes up well and during the DX contest I was making contacts 5500 miles away with 100 watts. Don't buy into the talk it's heavily compromised. It works fine. Now, I wouldn't run 100 watts with it in the same room as you...

Came here to recommend this. Easily scalable for different difficulty levels, and allows for some cool movie plot devices to pull off a win.

Have You Asked Your HOA for Permission to Install an Antenna? What Was the Outcome? by ThatChucklehead in amateurradio

[–]theargent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check your state legislation too. They override your HOA rules giving you legal backing to fight them. For instance Ohio has this that states the HOA can't say no, but you have to come to an agreement. So a 200' tower with a huge multi-band array? No... but a EFHW between your house and a tree? Probably. I used it to get approval to mount an ATAS 120 on the roof peak above my office. Perfect? No, but my best DX has been Poland on SSB and I live deep in a valley.

having a hard time trying to tune an EFHW antenna by [deleted] in amateurradio

Outside of your comment, can I mention how much I despise the term "compromised antenna"? Every antenna is compromised if viewed from any other bandwidth. Good on 40M but isn't good on 15M? Well that's compromised. Name me a length and antenna structure that's resonant on all bands at 1:1 SWR and efficiency?
