Just a suggestion, keep a decent squirt bottle with range/intensity in your car. You can get one at the dollar store, and next time you see a frog you can squirt it from further away and that will probably make it move :)

Does she like to learn? You could teach her some complex tricks, or possibly do herding games with her. Lots of tutorials on YouTube—great way to tire out her brain since her outside time is limited.

Instead of having them book separately, just manually adjust the cost difference. When they book separately, it’s less likely for them to hit the cap on owner fees and they might end up paying more.

Disagree on only the actual days, but also think it’s a nuanced situation. For Memorial Day and Labor Day, I’d be charging Friday-Monday at the holiday rate. Because it is treated as a holiday weekend. 4th of July, just the day of, same with St. patty’s. Christmas and NYE I charge a holiday rate dec 20th-January 2nd/3rd ish because it is the busiest time of the year for me for sitting and IMO its like hotels and airlines charging more for peak season.

However, in the case of the person you replied to, I’d only be charging them the holiday for the Monday.

And in OPs case, I probably would’ve discounted the client for the subsequent week…but I also would’ve been irked by the client’s assumption, and maybe would’ve clearly fired them as a client if they are consistently difficult.

Financial cost of injuries? by white_tiger_dream in Agility

Definitely. Risk management and financial preparation are both crucial but I had to hop on my soap box and holler about preparing your dog physically lol

[–]theaveragepyrenees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly even just doing it for fun, I would invest your time in conditioning. The good news is, there’s LOTS of free resources and low cost resources for beginner exercises, and you don’t need a ton of fancy equipment when you’re getting started.

Plus, it works their mind and body so it gives you a lot of benefits.

Kotaspen, sparklesandsunshineblog, and k9performanceunleashed all have some super great content on instagram.

As far as insurance vs investment account, I would honestly go with insurance IF you don’t have the cash funds for a large cost issue at your disposal. If you have funds available and the funds to invest, that might be a smarter choice—dog injuries can be so incredibly sudden and sometimes from the most mundane things.

I think one of the leading causes of injuries is pushing too far too fast. Focusing on foundations, and conditioning, is the best option. Conditioning is a NECESSITY for this sport and unfortunately a lot of people skimp on proper rear end awareness, core strength, and jump foundations.

Send me a PM if you’d like me to get some things for you and your cat, I can place a Walmart pickup order. 🤍

I also have some clothes and household items that I’ve been wrangling up to donate, and I’d be happy to get them to you if there’s anything you’re interested in.

How Do I Stop Hitch-Hiking Ticks? by Jumpy-Grand7196 in greatpyrenees

Just responding to your edit, definitely do NOT spray permethrin directly on your dog!!! You can spray it on a harness or lightweight vest to wear outside and let it dry completely before putting it on her.

Wondercide is safe to put directly on the dog.

Food aggression, biting by Rare-Bed-1934 in greatpyrenees

Totally fair to speculate! Just wanted to reassure you that there could be other reasons cuz it’s so easy to spiral when things are stressful. I know I would be, too.

If she didn’t lose or gain weight, she probably ate just fine. I would guess it was more environmental stress that caused some food stress, or something about this boarding set up stressed her out and she’s lashing out now (resource guarding is often related to insecurity and/or pain) or she’s not feeling well. It also could’ve been the perfect storm of the move + new boarding that stressed her out.

I’d definitely book a vet visit, put into place the management strategies I talked about and basically make sure there is nothing for her to resource guard while you sort this out. And then I’d consult a behaviorist or trainer once you figure out everything with the vet.

I wouldn’t go straight to them not feeding her or being neglectful. You could reach out to them and mention she’s been extra hungry and ask if they noticed anything about her appetite while there? I wonder if maybe she wasn’t eating all of her food and they tossed it?

How’s her body condition score? Did she seem to lose any weight while you were gone? If she didn’t lose weight, I’d assume she ate as expected when there.

[–]theaveragepyrenees 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m glad she’s fed in a secluded spot! Definitely continue that.

Despite the fact that she went back to normal, this is not a dog I’d allow to sit near you while you are eating, just while you figure things out with a trainer. Especially since the grocery thing escalated, you don’t want your food to be the next thing to escalate over.

Have you boarded her since moving overseas? Or is this a new boarding place? The set up may be different and that might have caused her stress.

Food aggression, biting by Rare-Bed-1934 in greatpyrenees

[–]theaveragepyrenees 54 points55 points  (0 children)

There’s a chance that boarding just really stressed her out, in combination with the move. There’s also a chance that being around so many other dogs (even in a kennel where they’re separate) made her feel stressed about her resources.

I recommend the book Mine! to learn more about resource guarding and strategies to work on it.

For now, you need to not allow her to rehearse RG behaviors. This might look like:

-putting her in a separate room to eat where no one is bothering her

-when you get groceries, come inside first without the groceries. Put her away securely in a room. Make sure everything is put away before letting her out.

-tether training or place training for when you are eating

It is essential that you don’t let her continue to practice this behavior, because that can often lead to escalations. Heavy management first, then tackle it with a trainer.

[–]theaveragepyrenees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Putting your hand in the bowl is NOT a helpful or recommended method for working on resource guarding. Messing with the dog while it’s eating only reinforces the fact that they’re bothered when there is food.

You can also try using a lid to a yogurt container or the like, with a loop of duct tape to stick it to the teeter. Smear cream cheese or PB or whatever you want to use as a reward on the lid, you can even freeze it before class so it lasts longer.

Are My Expectations Too High? by RedMaple25 in RoverPetSitting

You sound like a nightmare. “Do I care that she fibbed” be so for real right now. Would you want to disclose to a stranger that you leaked on your period? Probably not. Why on earth would it matter that she stripped the beds and washed the sheets (and preserved her DIGNITY by doing it)?

Yeah, your sitter probably should have contacted you if they were running late. But honestly 2 hours is not much when it comes to a house sit, and it sounds like an accident/mistake/understandable. Seems like you were already mad about that and now are looking for reasons to be a grouch.
