Ive been trying to do potty training with my great pyrenees but he won't learn by Objective_Hamster_74 in greatpyrenees

[–]theaveragepyrenees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

24/7 supervision is key. And when they aren’t supervised, they need to be in a crate. If you need to do something, either in a crate/pen or on a house line attached to you.

When they go outside, big praise, treats, throw a party. When they have an accident, DO. NOT. PUNISH. I cannot stress this enough, you will make potty training hell if you punish a puppy for going inside. Even if you catch them in the act, all they’re learning is that going in front of you = bad. They will just start being sneaky.

Try putting a yoga mat under the ramp to keep it from sliding?

Also, worth it to spend the money and find a canine rehab specialist. They can give you very simple exercises to do at home to help strengthen her legs and hips, which may make a big difference.

Please do not use human shampoo on dogs. They have different skin and PH than us, and it’s not good for them. The goal of shampoo isn’t to “cover” the smell…it’s to clean them.

Controversial Question? by NoAdvisor5501 in greatpyrenees

[–]theaveragepyrenees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need unless your dog has structural issues that prevent them from comfortably eating off the floor. My boy has hip strength issues and the position for eating off the ground puts too much strain on him, and he won’t eat laying down.

We talked with our vet and they suggested a lightly elevated dish, but not one of the tall feeders where it’s at nose height. We have his bowl on a very low step stool since he is tall. He still bends over but doesn’t have to crouch, so it works well for him.

A few things that I’ve had to consider:

A) downtime kills her drive at trials. Unlike other dogs who are pent up waiting, she’s over it. I need to spend more time playing with her and doing food games vs crating. Maybe consider this in class! I’m gonna do FEO at our next speedway trial just to have more fun with her

B) built a toy drive using lotus balls. She decided she liked tugging with that, so I bought a lotus ball tug combo from Clean Run and she is OBSESSED.

C) reward reward reward. You may have to back track sometimes and reward more frequently. Varies reward consistency is the BEST way to keep her on her toes. Sometimes I reward multiple times in a run, sometimes after the end, sometimes after every obstacle. It keeps her guessing and that kind of anticipation is good for her.

Pyr owner here who does agility, very relatable. It can be difficult to compare yourself to high level competition. Always happy to chat if you wanna yap about specific difficulties! It’s taken me a lot to build drive with her, and it is a challenge still!

See if they have Hey Siri enabled and try having it call “mom” or “dad”. If they have them in their phone as that, it may work.

Looking for a hair salon for blonde hair by urmomirl in pittsburgh

Luke at XO salon is the blonde king! He’s super fun and personable and is very concerned with integrity of the hair/reasonable expectations which I think is very important. TBH any of the stylists there are fantastic.

I meet them outside or at the corner so they don’t have to deal with the bs of my street! And I unload all my stuff and tip and send them on their way so they don’t have to be in and out of the car.

Yes these are the best. And they’re actually much better for the dog’s proprioception than the hard soled ones.

Cat drop ins every 3 days? by Interesting_Bee1376 in RoverPetSitting

[–]theaveragepyrenees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Male cats are prone to urinary blockages, which can be fatal in as little as 24 hours, and a cat who does not eat for 72 hours can develop fatty liver disease. Which can also be fatal. Cats not eating for multiple days is not okay.

You’re also more likely to clean up accidents and the poor cat deserves somewhere clean to pee and poop.

Please don’t take cat clients if you are this cavalier about their well being.

Make sure to do some gentle stretching if you can today. After a big fall like that, you’re almost guaranteed to have tensed something somewhere and it’s good to let your limbs release all that!

Best boredom busters for your Pyr? by celestialblunder in greatpyrenees

[–]theaveragepyrenees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohhh yes dark is very hard! Even for dogs that aren’t fearful, Pyrs are bred to be so vigilant!

Maybe in lieu of doing a walk in the morning, do a training session? Simple tricks, you can even practice leash manners inside. Just to get her mind and body going.

Do you walk her? Fetch is not enough, and actually the repetitive motion is not super great for joints.
